Weird. How can you have a dud cooler, though? I mean, ultimately they're just a lump of metal that draws away the heat? That waterblock theory, might be something there.

I was thinking something more like what Game4it was getting at - mounting pins on the cooler. I don't think there's be anything wrong with the metal portion, but the pins are just plastic, and the thing got thrown around a bit beforehand was I wasn't planning on using it. :P

You would have damaged the mobo or bent pins if you had enough pressure to bend/compress the IHS.
There alot more solid than you think.

Maybe the stock cooler pins are a bit iffy and not doing the job?

That's what I'm thinking. It's a new board anyway, so it's definitely not anything to do with the socket. Switched from an Ex4 to a Z77E. My friend got the old board, and he hasn't reported anything amiss. All the pins have locked in place, so I'll just assume it's a dud cooler in some way. I might have a spare stock one actually...

Edit: Must have been one of the pins. Spare cooler from the other 3570, and I'm up and running at 45°C, no GPU. :P
Dremel and a couple of watercooling bits are due to arrive Wednesday, but at least I'm back online for these couple of days.

    Thats better.
Funny enough i had planned to do the same thing this week (stock cpu cooler and no gpu) so i can clean the bits and bobs.:D

Hopefully the CLU is back in stock on tuesday so i can delid and compare temps before i go stock cooling.

Still have no working case though as its "a work in progress" so i'm running the rig on my desk :(

Where are you planning to get your CLU from anyway? I haven't looked around for it, but I imagine it's a bit harder to find than normal pastes?

I'll have to reinstall Windows as I'm migrating from Z77 to Z87, right?

Got the build up and running, played around with it a bit. Have a rough OC of 4.4ghz going, max temps of 82 deg in cinebench after a mins rendering, HT on. I would say ambient are about 25 deg (I am sitting here topless :P).

Will probably sleep now. Case is suuuper quiet, even fans at half speed are very quiet.

Seems I have an average CPU, so a bit disappointed :P. I might get 4.6 out of it with a bit of tinkering.

    G'night! (Or Good morning xD).

GPU running a tad hot at idle (38 deg) for my liking. I will set up my other case fans tomorrow (side fan should help a lot with that).

Now there is a proper PC building enthusiast, sleep be damned:D Well wear on the new build Gumbi, don't forget to stick up a few pics.

Some updates on my rig. Will post pics et.c when I have a chance. Still a few things to tidy up. Cabling, maybe adding the 2 800RPM fans, etc. Running the 4770k with HT on at 4.4ghz. Totally non-fine-tuned OC, just asked for a rough and ready OC from friend with the chip. He confirmed I didn't have what might be considered a very good or great chip, and I settled on a number he threw out. I can probably push 4.6ghz with HT on, but Haswell runs HOT. Cinebench is the only benchmark I am using (IBT, for example, uses AVX instructions which pushes temps to 95 degrees (on a Dark Rock Pro 2) at 512MB 10 runs).

Hits 78 degrees in CB otherwise. Obviously a lot less in games and alos less again without HT.

The Nanoxia case is quiet. Fans at low are very quiet. The fan controller makes it really easy to ramp them up if gaming. At max they make a light whir, honestly, equivalent to my last system at idle!!! The Dark Rock Pro 2 is very quiet unless benching. Only a moderate sounds when its fans are a t max when benching.

Arctic Accelero. Man. This thing!Cannot here it's fan over my IDLE system until 70%. Minor whit at 100%. Amazing. My rooms ambients are upwards of 25 degrees I imagine, because card is idling at 38 degrees. I didn't bother reaplcing the stock heatsink (memory, VRMs, etc.) on my card because I thought I had lost 1 of the ones that came with the Accelero.

I mounted the Accelero wrong for a bit (copper block BARELY making contact. Hit 97 degrees in SC2 :D Fixed that. Benched Heaven for 30 mins with my 7950. Fans at 75% (barely audible above system, negligible really). Max core temp 63 degrees! Max VRM 84 (went between 81 and 84). I am very happy with these results. I haven't even replaced the stock heatsinks yet (G1 glue + Ultra Extreme thermal padding will help A LOT I think). Oh, I forgot, was running an OC xD 1225mhz core. (Reference 7950 is 800, most boost to 950). With a bit of tweaking I will optimise VRM cooling. I think I can hit 1300mhz on air (and be super silent, which will be amazing!).

My system is quiet such that my PSU is actually the most audible fan (and it's pretty damn quiet, a SF Amazon 650w).

Think that covers it all for now :P

    @Gumbi
That sounds like you didn't have much luck with the cpu :(

Thats very hot for 4.4 cinebench.
I know you haven't fine tuned yet but what Vcore are you using atm?

Nice result with the noise levels though :)

    @headshot
If you read this empty your PM folder as its full!!! :D

Yes, doesn't look like it. 1.225 I think? I am not home now now so I could be wrong. Ambients are quite high in my room though (as my GPU idling at 39 degrees should demonstrate - I've had it at idle at 33 with stock, an clearly my cooling is superior with maxing core at 63 1200mhz OC). Also don't forget I have HT on. And Haswell runs hot! But temps are amazing.

Still have 2 fans to add too. I'm not sure where I will add them. I currently have the two stock front intakes, a side PWM intake I added and the stock 140mm exhaust. I'm thinking of adding the 2 800RPMs as top exhausts (have to leave the air chimney open for this) but not sure yet.

1.225v is about average i'd say and maybe when you fine tune it you can get it above average.

I presumed ht would add some extra heat but from what i read some chips just run hot with ht or not.The results are very random.

Runs about 10 degree hotter with HT AFAIK.

When you get time try some tests with and without ht to see if its that bad.
    10c it a lot wow.

I dunno about recent generations, but for my i7 950, it was about the same jump in temps with HT on/off as well.

I really haven't played with my 4770k enough. Just a rough and ready OC at 5 o clock Monday morning haha. Not enough time these days, and playing around with other stuff too :P

I'm actually surprised I can run Heaven at 1200mhz + 0% Power Limit without throttling, it must have something to do with having extremely stock voltages (linked to ASIC score I think, very high in my case). I ran the bench first time, was ecstatic with results, found out about PL, heart sank. Then ran again at plus 20% with the same results :)

Dammit,I had pre ordered Coollaboratory Liquid Ultra from memoryC as it was due into stock yesterday.I've just been told it will be 1-2 weeks now :(

On the plus side i cancelled order and had an instant refund into paypal :)
Now where next to try hmmm.

On a side note anyone know where buy a vice around south dublin?
    "hammer time" :D

I'm thinking I might try the razor method, unless I can find a very cheap vice somewhere. Surely a Stanley blade is cheaper than a vice? :P

I've seen so many chips with nicks taken out of the pcb using blades.I really dont want to try that tbh. I much rather bait the ***T out of it with a hammer :D

LOL MemoryC sent me the message about stock in error, just re ordered now.

Let me know if you find a decent looking vice somewhere, I can chip in for it if you like.

Edit: Actually, this looks pretty good, rubber edging too, which would help.

You can't borrow one of someone? I'm sure you coul grab one for a few quid in Lidl sometime?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,181 ✭✭✭Serephucus

That's what I was thinking, but you never know when that sort of stuff will show up. Could be a month of gardening shít and swimwear before something comes along. :P

That looks decent although not sure if the rubber would grip as well as metal.
"Removable rubber jaw covers" handy :D

I'll let you know if i buy one :)

Only know of one person who might have one but if i remember the grips on it are very worn.

    Good spot Serephucus.
