    He founded the ANC (before)
Ended Apartheid in talks with DeKlerk (after)

The organisation became the ANC in 1923 and formed a military wing, the Umkhonto we Sizwe (Spear of the Nation) in 1961.

I think that would have left NM, in Diapers, or what ever they used at the time.

Radio 1 RTE just lead with this non story again

I think Dave McSavage must be running the Newsroom

I've a feeling this time it's serious. If they admit he's critical it's got to be.

Breaking on twitter that he just passed away.

    Nope.

All major news agencies deny that he is dead.

The 'we have been primed for it' Montrose junket will soon kick into swing, expect Primetime from JoBurg and no end of 'RTE talent' being dispatched to cover the funeral

Endless interviews with Mary Robinson et al ...

    Laughable

Rte Radio 1's Mary Wilson now commenting on Mandela families upset over International medias death watch without a hint of irony in Wilsons delivery of same report!!

Is it just me or does anyone else just want him to get on with it and die, so the rest of us don't have to listen to endless media speculation about if he'll die. The man is 94 he's had a good innings, time to let him go now I think.

    .....

Must be angling for a Primetime from JBurg

Downright weird listening to Michael Murphy leading our National news with such as... 'Nelson Mandela has just passed a solid stool'

Media types live off this kind of ..... stuff.

Wonder if his passing , when it does eventually come, will have any effect on the politics and tensions in the country. He seems to have had a relatively calming influence on all sides, and to have had at least some respect from very different quarters.

Have to admit the speculation about "is he dead yet" from BBC, RTE, etc is over the top. At one point Zuma said Mandela has deteriorated and is now in a critical condition. After telling us that, the BBC complained that they weren't being given any more details about his health other than that he's critical and that Zuma was vague. Seriously? A 94-year old man in critical condition in hospital. What more do they need to know? Are they expecting Zuma to come out and say he expects Mandela to die next Sunday?

His daughter was on now that his family see the media as vultures waiting for him to die so they unleash all their reports/documentaries and make money of it. She has a point.

Another quote from a BBC reporter to close his report: "But when that final monent will come, nobody knows." Mother of jaysus.

With any luck there will be a power failure, and the decent people can start a new beginning, at this stage they need a break to get on with their lives. Get the western puppets out, and let life take its course. Maybe a South African Spring.
Will the west support that, will the west ????.

It does kind of suck you in though. I had sky news on in the background this afternoon with the volume muted. When I saw people leaving flowers etc I thought he'd died. I find myself wondering if he's dead yet as I'm putting on the morning news.

Camera shots can be deceitful, why not give us a shot from a chopper.

I reckon South Africa will be like Zimbabwe in the 90s in 15 years. The ANC is a corrupt body which utterly dominates SA, no one will be able to challenge it and from that comes the worst of politics.

helped end apartheid (I'm not a big fan of the ANC government either) but he did do his bit

Halting sites in Ireland probably pale against the vicinity around the hospital. Reports of 2000 journalists that have been camping out there for more than 2 weeks ...

    Get a grip try google.

I did; apart from articles about his death and wikipedia (which is mostly positive about his legacy), the first search result I came across is this. Somehow I doubt it backs up your point, so suggesting to try google wasn't the best idea.

What legasy did he leave his people, What does his people think about in Sharpville, and a lot of other places, the miners who were shot dead in the last few months, Hero me Bolli(k$. Traitor to his roots. The ANC is finished when passes, hopefully some decent people come to the top, but I reckon it will be bloody.

Everyone dies, a lot of people in South Africa, did not have his comforts or money. and did a lot more for their country. Some died in horrible conditions, remember Steve Beko.

It's interesting the way RTE will ignore major events in other countries but will wait around for weeks for a non-event like "pope is catholic" or "old man dies."

I know on the Mooney Show they had a nestcam thing set up I wonder could they do that for Nelson Mandela. Maybe every morning have a highlights package of what happened overnight etc...

In fairness to them he was one of the most important figures of the 20th century and his death will be one of the biggest news stories this year (presuming he dies this year, of course). They seem to have only sent one guy, unlike with the pope.

Funnily enough, AP and Reuters actually got caught doing something similiar to this a couple of years ago.

Well, there was the sanitation, the medicine, education, wine, public order, irrigation, the fresh-water system and public health...oh, hang on, that was the Romans.
