    anyone remember that show? anyway...

DESENSITATION to violence thats what they do really isnt it. I remember playing a sniper game sometime back, and when you shot someone in the head from a long range the camera would actually follow the bullet from the gun all the way to the exploding head on the other end, it was actually a shock first time I saw it happen, but then it became fun to try and get that shot again [mostly for that follow the bullet camera which didnt usually happen], so something which was :( starting out became :) and really had me trying to get those cool shots :pac:

and I could actually see myself being a sniper even
there is no two ways about it, seeing violence desensitises our minds to violence we see later. its all fun and games............till someone 'actually' gets hurt. I mean why would you want to see someone get murdered grusemely on screen in a film it makes zero sense  . its fupduck when you think about it! could never understand horror movies, and peoples desire to see people cut to pieces in them. they are 100000 times more dangerous to society than porn ever will be too I think

It's fun to shoot people in a video game. Or to watch a film with violence.
Doesn't mean I'm actually gonna go out and do my own version of the human centipede.

I might say that videogame, films and tv will desensitize you to violence IN videogames, films and tv (news too) but it won't desensitize you to real world violence. If it did, you'd have hundreds of shootings everyday. Pulling a trigger in Half-Life is different to pulling a trigger on a person. The kind of people who do go on rampages are not well in the first place. Before videogames they did bad things if they hadn't gotten professional help, like the guy who shot Lennon or the man who committed the Bath massacre.

Does anyone think that the Catcher in the Rye should be banned? It was a possible 'motivator or influence' for Chapman. Tbh, I don't even think the media blames shootings on videogames anymore because its very obvious it isn't the massive influence people like Jack Thompson thought it was.

People's bloodlust for gore goes a lot further back than Movies, Games and Videos. To the dawn of time, in fact.

I used to watch Bosco years ago. Not once have I wanted to stick my hand up a ginger midgets ass until its cheeks turned red.

Or do crazy drugs that made every door magically bring me to the zoo or a creamery.

They won't make people go out and carry out violent acts, but people are definitely able to stomach far more sadistic stuff than in the past. The Exorcist is tame now, and had people traumatised. The 1950s Dracula and the like just looks silly now, like The Count from Sesame Street - yet people were terrified by it at the time.

    No.
If someone is gonna go out and kill people then that's what they'll do regardless. People don't need films to give them ideas.

Yeah but if ya think about it.........it's people that have the idea to put it into the film in the first place.

I remember there being an episode of Bullsh!t about violent games. They got a young lad who played a lot of Call of Duty and the likes and gave him a shot with a real gun. He wasn't too happy about it. The real thing is very different and the noise and recoil can put people off long before they start their career of murder.
