Outside of the N, the days wilt will only do it good. I gave mine 24hrs and at that I regret not shaking it as well! For the second cut I'm planning on a 36hr wilt with a shake thrown in for good measure;)

Was it flat mowed or was conditioner mower used.
With flat mowing redding not as necessary in my view.
Mahoney and Stan ted all silage we can compare Dm when it's tested.
I often feel I would be better tedding but we don't have one. I find 24 hrs on the ground and raked into 20' swarths sufficient

shook 24 - 2.5 - 10 on 20ac on the 10th may. When is the earliest i can cut it for round bales?.... Could do with getting second cut on some of it

How many bags to the acre?

One bag per acre is 24 units of nitrogen and it uses about 2 units per day so in 12 days the nitrogen is used up where as if you put out 3 to the acre then that's 72 units so 36 days before nitrogen is used. Did it get slurry around the same time?

that really depends on what you are going feeding alone with the silage during the Autumn/winter/spring (sorry should have used the word housing period). If you have cheaper low DM grub you need dry silage to balance things. If just on silage alone 33% dm is lovely stuff.

That would be fine now even allowing 27 units from the slurry along with the 36 from bagged it would be all used up by 10 june.

7ish acres mown on Tue, baled yesterday evening, after some glorious sunshine. Light crop at 55 bales but good quality.
10 acres fit to mow now when the weather permits, hopefully next week.

well im not sure what you call it but first cut went in to pit and was closed after one grazing half way through that growing i closed another section for bales, the other ground that already went into thhe pit is closed for another cut and will be hoping to take another small run of bales late on in the year off the ground just dropped, so not sure what cut it is. chopped around our usual system a bit and trying to get higher quality and push out the quantity a bit aswell. Its taking a fair bit of juggling to get the silage reserves back up to a safe amount, plus im starting to dread fertilizer bills.

Even Stan hasn't his second cut fully ready yet..... so we know you're pulling the p*ss!! :p

You just cut some more ground, not technically second cut unless you're taking it off the same ground as your first cut. We covered this topic last year!! :pac:

saw a few places with second cut done on my travels during the week. A field has to have a first cut done to do a second cut. not mickey mouse baling paddocks:rolleyes:

I know there is local ground where 3rd cut is growning. the famous land I baled first cut on Paddies day:D

I suppose if you count topping the rushes and the buttercups a lot of us could be on the third cut:cool:

well back on quantity but we woud have traditionally went for bulk. this year im aiming for quality, bar i got the rain today this stuff mightnt be as hoped.

Not a dairy farm but I'm going to reply anyway ;). Same as chippy, half of last year's yield but going for quality this year. Went with one heavy cut last year and never again.

Other land that I sell the silage off is back around 30% but fertiliser went out later than normal.

From what I'm hearing (both on here and in the real world) reseeded swards are the ones that are performing this year.
