Cops have just taken back most of the park some area with tents, maybe not the park itself though.

edit: They destroyed some tents, but it seems like the protesters are astonishingly still holding out in the park, having had to endure tear-gas since early morning. Latest word tonight is that more people are coming from different parts of Istanbul.

The number of lawyers arrested at the Çağlayan court appears to be rising with each report.
Hurriyet says more than 50 lawyers were detained, citing the Ankara Bar Association.
It quotes a statement from the association as saying: “The detention of the lawyers at the courthouse by force brings [into] question what kind of ‘democratic regime’ we are living in."

    Very good question...

It has to be said that the more secular predcessors of the current government were not exactly love, hugs and welcoming of dissent either. Dissapearances in the Kurdish region, crack downs on leftist groups.....There were hunger strikes in the prisons too, if I recall.

Awesome atmosphere earlier tonight with crowds sitting down gathered around piano recitals, riot police beside them. We just need the 'Hoff to pay a visit any time now..

Tonight, the park was forcibly cleared.

Gas bomb allegedly fired into Divan hotel lobby

    hurriyet news
Amnesty International’s Turkey Director Murat Çekiç said that police tried to break the doors of the Divan Hotel. Injured people tried to reach the upper floors, he added. A few minutes after, live footage showed police encircling the building and throwing tear gas inside the doors of the hotel.

Reports that a new gas is being used that causes skin rashes, and an acid mixture being added to the water cannons.

A lot of stuff happening right now, there's a German Green MP in that hotel and various other international media around (although they weren't allowed into the park by the police) so hopefully we will see the full story come out.

Declaration earlier today from Turkish PM - "Nobody can intimidate us. We take no orders or instruction from anyone but God."

Yet more thuggery by the Turkish state. Depressing, if predictable.

After the piano recitals, a new group of people simply standing still in the square in protest ('duran adamlar').

Police threatening to intervene promptly, but looks like the meme will spread rapidly.

Presumably, now that the use of "chemical weapons" has been revealed, the USA will begin to arm the protesters....
