Anyone else hearing about these riots in Turkey?

12 people have been seriously injured and hundreds suffered respiratory problems after police attacked protesters with tear gas and water cannon in an attempt to break up an Occupy Gezi Park rally in central Istanbul.

The clashes erupted after police carried out a dawn raid against protesters Friday, the second in as many days. Demonstrators are angry at government plans to cut down trees in Gezi Park, next to Taksim Square, to make way for a replica Ottoman army barracks and a shopping mall. They say it is the last green space of any size in the center of Istanbul.

Six of the injured are suffering from serious head trauma. A 34-year old Egyptian tourist is undergoing an operation after suffering a brain hemorrhage, Huseyin Demirduzen, from the Istanbul Medical Chamber board, told Reuters. While a member of the opposition Peace and Democratic Party is in intensive care in a serious condition.

Hundreds more suffered respiratory problems due to the effects of tear gas, Demirduzen said. Several people were injured after a wall they were trying to climb in an attempt to get away from clouds of tear gas collapsed underneath them.

edit: They destroyed some tents, but it seems like the protesters are astonishingly still holding out in the park, having had to endure tear-gas since early morning. Latest word tonight is that more people are coming from different parts of Istanbul.

It has to be said that the more secular predcessors of the current government were not exactly love, hugs and welcoming of dissent either. Dissapearances in the Kurdish region, crack downs on leftist groups.....There were hunger strikes in the prisons too, if I recall.

Amnesty International’s Turkey Director Murat Çekiç said that police tried to break the doors of the Divan Hotel. Injured people tried to reach the upper floors, he added. A few minutes after, live footage showed police encircling the building and throwing tear gas inside the doors of the hotel.

Reports that a new gas is being used that causes skin rashes, and an acid mixture being added to the water cannons.

A lot of stuff happening right now, there's a German Green MP in that hotel and various other international media around (although they weren't allowed into the park by the police) so hopefully we will see the full story come out.

Declaration earlier today from Turkish PM - "Nobody can intimidate us. We take no orders or instruction from anyone but God."

Presumably, now that the use of "chemical weapons" has been revealed, the USA will begin to arm the protesters....
