Thanks again, Meno, I think this probably answers my other question, which is 'why do them slow?' Is it to allow you to build endurance, avoid injury and recover OK?

I'm rarely exhausted after a long run (I was actually pretty exhausted yesterday, but I think that was the heat as the pace was slow), and I'm not injured so I'm probably doing them slow enough.
Thanks, everyone, and sorry for hijacking your thread Robbie. See you at the race tomorrow, but I'm going to the physio before it, and being dry needled, so i think I'll be hobbling around the course!

Not trying to catch you out or anything but is this not a contradiction;):D

No problem btw in hijacking my thread.I'm learning from the debate so it's all good!

I probably won't race tomorrow night as I am racing in Trinity on Wednesday at BHAA event (and I'm not allowed race two days in a row:))
Might head past that way on my run though.

    .

Well spotted, but I have office-chair-itis, so I can't blame it on my amazing turns of speed! (Joke!)

Not at all, only a slightly strange sensation with a needle in ya, have only had it the once but I found it great. I would have been one of the skeptical folk too. I've been converted!

Thanks, Blockic! I'm having it in my glut - apparently that's less painful than calves etc, so I'm hoping it will be OK! Good to hear it worked for you.

Ran home from work this evening. A little bit of rain but still humid so the rain was quite refreshing.

    6.66mi @8:31avg

^^^^ I really hope that's not a bad omen! Was so tempted just to run a few more metres to get it off that figure but I battled my OCD and superstitious demons and left it at that!

I've had it on the knee and Thigh, not too bad actually. Got interesting when she wired up electrodes and passed a current through it!

I did not have to have it as I am so improved from diligently doing my exercises, so it's still a mystery to me!

Had been looking forward to this as the novelty of running the shorter distances appealed to me just to see how I'd get on to be honest.Plus the fact that this event is set up so that you get to race against people of a similar standard to you in a specific race.

There were two events a 1 mile and a 2000m race around a marked grass track in Trinity College where the cricket pitch is.Conditions were good as the rain had come down earlier but was stopped for most of the race times. The grass was well manicured and made for a good surface to run on. I brought my spikes and decided to run in these.

I had never raced a mile before so this was definitely unchartered territory for me plus there was the nervousness that the dreaded hamstrings wouldn't take the pressure of pushing it over that distance. Bumped into Claralara so that was nice and spoke briefly to her and saw her put in a solid performance in the ladies mile. Well done CL.

I wasn't sure if I'd do both races so just said to myself , see how you feel after the mile. Anyway onto the race. They decide to bundle our grade with the grade above us as the number of participants dictated so that was fine just hoped I wouldn't be burnt out after a lap never mind next 3 laps.
We lined up and the gun went off. Started out at a fairly belting pace (for me!) so tried to settle into a rhythm and get a good inside line. First lap, I was thru in 87 secs, feeling ok if a little odd, my legs are not used to feeling like this and my lungs are certainly not used to feeling this pressure so early in a race.Oh Oh I'm thinking Jesus I'm not going to last this pace for the whole lot. I had done 6:48 for my first mile in a recent race (3.75 miles) so i reckoned in a 1 mile race I had potential to get near 6 minutes so my aim was to get as close to 6 mins as possible. Thru 800m in 3:03. Beginning to mentally start the "hold on for one more lap" thing. Was definitely feeling the pressure at this stage. Seemed to be holding my spot in the race and was passing more people than were passing me out if I remember right. Don't know what I was through 1200 in but was feeling ok for another lap and started to try and ick people off in the last 400m.Couldn't tell you what position I was in at this stage ,was so focussed on just keeping pace as long as possible and try to get some sort of strong finish in, which I did manage to do and came in at 6:09 according to the Garmin.

Absolutely thrilled with that. Couldn't help thinking afterwards though that I might have left a bit out on the track, but I was happy that I finished in a good time (i now have a mile time) and more importantly , hamstrings survived.

    1.07miles in 6:09 (5:47 avg)

    Race #2- 2000m

Legs were pretty tired after the first one but decided to do this in the end as I reckoned most of the others had done the mile so would likely be tired too. In my head I was thinking, treat this as a tempo run and it would still be a good nights work.

Again we were bundled in with another grade but this time the grade below us which was good because I knew then that it would not be blistering pace for the first couple of laps. Went into this one a lot more relaxed. Gun went and I got into a nice rhythm early on despite the jelliness still in the legs from earlier.A couple of guys went out very quickly and were well ahead of the rest of the pack after the first lap. Wasn't worried about that. This was a more comfortable pace so I was now planning to keep even pace for next couple of laps and then increase the pace from 800 out and see how many people I could pick off. This plan worked a treat. Really felt like a proper runner now as I was ahead of the main pack now and beginning to reel in the second place guy. I was laughing to myself as all I could think about was CM hunting down her targets in her recent marathon. Yeah this is what real racing is all about and it feels good when you know you are going to catch the guy in front. I caught him with about 250 to go. He could sense I was close and tried to increase the pace a bit as he passed some stragglers so I followed him past this group and then decided to burst past him hoping that my sudden turn of speed would demoralise him into giving up the chase. Once I had built up a gap i knew I had him. The guy in first place had too much of a lead but I put in as strong a finish as I could in last stretch anyway. I reckon another lap and I might have had him.

So second place! Could feckin believe it, delighted. On the podium, I might as well retire now:D I know it was just a small BHAA race but it felt good and I'm thinking what I might be able achieve with a little bit of speed work in my training.

    2000m (2km) (1.31miles) in 8:18 (avg 6:20)

Total mileage for night including warmups(didnt measure cooldown, was very short anyway) was 3.66miles

Thanks everyone. Really delighted with how it went.

And yes BL I did hesitate a little when typing in the word "stragglers";) I'm not forgetting where i've come from, don't worry:)

According to the starter last night Ronnie Delaney ran his first mile on that track. It was my first mile too and that is where the comparison ends!

    Thursday 13th June

Legs were a bit tired so decided a days rest would do no harm at this stage so no running and a long hot soak was had.

    Friday 14th June

Ran home from work in blustery and rainy conditions. Escaped the worst of the rain until about 15 mins from home where I got absolutely drenched and nearly taken off my feet at one stage by a gale force wind!

Looks like I finished 3rd in that one but as you can only win one prize I got the prize for the best finish in the 2000m. So am very happy with that.

Thanks Ososlo. If I can keep the training consistent and stay injury free there is more improvement there to be made. For DCM I have set a target of 3:45 now and will review after HM in Athlone in September. 3:45 would be a 42 minute improvement on last year so I'm not taking anything for granted yet, I've still a lot of work to do.

You're doing fantastic yourself too, certainly getting the mileage in. Do you have a time in mind yourself yet?

3:45 sounds very do-able for you. Best of luck with the training. Great confidence boost for you with all those pbs lately!

I'd love to get in or around 4 hours but don't want to get too caught up with a specific time. Like yourself will wait till September half to review target time. Main thing is staying injury free between now and DCM! Lovin every step of training though:D

    Sunday 16th June

Sacrificed a lie in and Father's day breakfast in bed for long run this morning with the club. Not as many as usual as the Childline 5k on in St Annes Park Raheny today. Plan was for around 12 miles

Because of lack of numbers ended up running this faster than I had planned. In the eternal words of Britney Spears " Oops I did it again..."

Upshot was 11.65miles @8:39avg. Ran the first 7 or so with a girl from club who is faster than me and then slowed it down to make it the rest of the way. In a way though this was a good session with good miles at HMP and then a few at LSR pace so was a good test for the last few miles.

    Splits :8:46,8:11,8:24,8:11,8:09,8:13,8:08,8:38,9:18,9:20,9:27,(9:07)

    MTD|81.44
    YTD|493.76

Another good solid week's work under the belt.Hope to keep this going now until Meno's marathon plan kicks it.

Tuesday 18th June - Club 2 Mile Race

This was going to be a good test for me as I've never run two miles flat out. How should I approach it, go easy on first lap and then flat out on second, try and keep it even as possible over the two laps and just give myself a time to aim for next time or just go out and run hard for as long as possible and see where it gets me. Difficult to decide.

In the end i went out pretty fast.About a half mile in I told myself to cop on and try maintain some sort of sustainable pace so slowed it down a bit , while still going quite hard. Went through first mile in 6:19 but was feeling it and it was a humid evening so it was tough going. My breathing was heavier than usual, which I suppose is to be expected over the shorter distance. Going into second lap , plan was to maintain a pace I could hold until last corner and then see if I had enough to raise it in the last stretch which was a couple of hundred metres I'd say.

That's what happened and I came in at 13:18 so was pretty happy with that for a first time effort.....Hey another PB! Bonus:D

Placed 23/41...Race was won in 10:05:eek:

Next one is in two weeks time so now I have something to aim for.

Right hamstring/glute a little aggravated after it so iced up when I got home.

    Warm Up 2.61 miles @ 9:21

    Race 2.03 miles @6:33avg
    Splits:6:19,6:49,(5:37)

    Cool down 1.12 miles @ 9:28

Total Mileage for the day 5.76 miles

Will hit the 500 mark tomorrow...leaving me on course for 1000mile challenge for the year.

Must start taking glaucosomine myself, I'm beginning to get creaks where I didn't have creaks before!
