Note to self: when the weather is like this and it's going to rain on Monday don't be the idiot with the 10 acres of silage so hilly it needs a baler. There is a special place at the back of the queue for that, and I'm in it.

FFS why did lads put silage pits in sheds. It's going to be like trying to get Quadboy into a condom today!!!!

Neighbour empties the roofed pit firstly in the winter, and stacks up dung in it then, very little rain runoff from it then. I'm going to try that this winter also, as that yard is very short on slurry storage!

I'd assume they were put under roofs in the past as cows use to eat off the face of the pit?

Not a bad decision. The drizzle started here at 7.30 am and there are substantial clouds building. Gotten cold as well. May or may not make it over to you but a bale in the yard is better than 2 in the field ;)

    I Like it JDI;)

Or to tie in with the latest craze of baling up surplus grazing....

'A bale of silage in the yard is worth 2 bales of grass walked into the ground' :D

    or

'A bale of silage in the yard is better than 2 days spent topping!'

this hooves in the fields that will make money this year not machinery

I have used F all machinery this spring to save forage.

Tryin' to feed another man's screw weanlings that have been half starved all winter..... hmmmm. Hard to know. More fodder than cattle changing hands in Ballinasloe mart even still. Hard to believe

The jury is still out. I wonder how a lad's back pocket will do next spring

Been watching a half dozen weanlings put into a field near me about a month ago. Looked like they had a tough enough winter. Certainly didn't get any concentrates to back up whatever silage was available.
Wondered to myself, whether they would thrive and make up for lost time, or would they remain poor, due to the set back they had over the winter. Would be AI calves, char and lim crosses.

Looking at them yesterday, I reckon they have no improvement made. Maybe even gone back a bit:confused:

Knocking the first 25 acres this morning. Will pick up early afternoon. Crop is not quite as heavy as other years tho..

Unless it has been closed all winter and been reseeded recently, meadows everywhere are quite poor. I was very disappointed with some old meadow I cut, but what can you do? Stuff I reseeded on the other hand was almost as heavy as other years, but a week behind. Hopefully the quality and DM will make up somewhat for quantity. Good to have some in the yard at this stage regardless.

Are they making a €10,500 euro note now?

    Seems a strange choice.

    3 X CAN + S
    3000 gals slurry

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,716 ✭✭✭1chippy

First cut all in and have to say probably the best quality we have done in a long time but definately down on quantity. Next cut hopefully will be ready for start of July.

Unfortunately the rain got to our silage before we did, so waiting for a window to cut and bale.

It's a hilly field and hardly top of the contractor's dream list. Looks like it will be the weekend or later before it's dry enough to mow safely. It was grazed till April and had very little on it (1 bag / acre + slurry) so hopefully won't drop too badly in quality in the meantime, and might even bulk up a bit.

Still, at least while the grass is stuck to the ground no f**cker can steal it.
