It's a big commitment alright to train for a marathon. There are lots of plans out there but you'd need to be running 5 days a week at minimum in my opinion for the duration of the plan. Whether you run 6 or even 7 ,although I think you need 1 rest day at a minimum, all depends on what your goal is.

I'll be doing four days a week two club sessions and easy run and lsr.

No run tonight as too much to do in preparation for my work trip. Off to Frankfurt which means no run tomorrow or Wednesday as the schedule just won't allow it and the hotel I'm booked into doesn't appear to have a gym so not even possibility of a dreadmill.

So I'll have to make up for it in the latter half of week by running 4 days on the trot.

Had my first run since last Sunday tonight. I've been reading a book on Chi running recently and decided to try a few things suggested in the book. Now either my legs were just fresh from no running over last few days or this Chi running thing is a revelation.

Was focusing on form trying to lean forward from the core, relax everything below the hips ,make the legs as light as possible and the run felt easy and comfortable all the way.

    6.19 miles @ 7:56avg pace

    Splits 8:16,8:07,7:57,7:54,7:50,7:41, (7:05)

Good t get back out and burn some calories after all the sh!te I've eaten this week!

Cool down of 0.60 miles @ 9:05 min pace makes total of 6.79 miles

Oh yeah baby! Goin all out for 3:45 ;)

That'll be a 42 minute improvement if I pull it off! Bit early I know for declaring my intentions but I'll nail my colours to the mast to help motivate.

we must've come in the same time last year as each other. 4.22?

4:27 for me. Was on course for 4:15 till about mile 19 and then I started to die.

As regards plan for this DCM , had been thinking P&D <55 but may try Meno's plan either, not fully decided yet.

How is your training coming along after your injury? and are you doing DCM13? any targets yourself?

Yeah i was the same, pace just dropped just before Roebuck hill and then jogged home but really enjoyed it. No pressure like.

I don't like the sounds of the P&D plan. Meno's plan could be good though.

I'm back running with no pain at all now and just slight tension in calf. I'll build back up again and try to get a base in before July and then if all goes well I'll see if i can realistically fit in DCM. I'm not going to bother unless I'm showing some signs that I could do better than last year.

You have really come on, i don't think 3.45 is out of reach for you at all. 8 min miles in training and all.

Thats good to hear.Hopefully you can make DCM.

Thanks.I'm really happy with my progress but not getting too carried away yet as I've a tendency to pick up injuries which put me out of action for weeks at a time so I never get big blocks of consistent training.Hopefully I can change that this year, hence trying this Chi Running thing.

Yeah I know what you mean, i can feel my calf getting a little tighter each run so i may need more physio.

so what do you think brought your time on, i know you were improving before you joined the running club.
what kind of time were you doing for half marathons and 10km's before dcm last year?

Last year I ran three half marathons, the Clontarf HM in July in 2:03, GSR Glasgow in 2:00 and Dublin HM (2 weeks later) in 1:56. Ran Glasgow semi-injured and Dublin just recovering from it. Couldn't break 50 mins in 10k for love nor money 51:30 in Fingal 10k, 50:36 in Samsung and then in Run for Mark in the Dark in November ran 47:30. This improvement I have no doubt was due to marathon training.

This year I ran more miles over the winter and have a better base plus I've lost a few pounds. Haven't done any club work that would attribute to improved times, haven't done any sessions yet. Main thing I've done differently so far is just try run more miles, mostly easy miles, no fancy sessions or anything like that.

    Friday 17th May

Didn't get out as planned.Enforced rest day.

    Saturday 18th May

Opted to skip the Park Run and do something a bit longer instead.

    8.23 miles @ 8:17avg

Pace only evened out during middle part of run otherwise it was a bit all over the place, push it a little at end to see if I had the strength in the legs to picked it up. Satisfying run all in all though.

    Splits:8:42, 8:28,8:31, 8:23,8:22,8:21,8:10,7:42,(6:41)

Follwed by some stretching and finished with a cool down of 0.78 miles @9:29

    Total for day: 9.01 miles

    Sunday 19th May

Despite several bottles of Coors last night in friends house(yet another Communion/Confirmation do) I managed to get myself out of the leaba this morning to go for the 8am run out from the club. Had about 12miles in my mind. A short ways into the run I felt a tightness in my right hamstring an had to stop and stretch it a bit. Started up again and eventually it subsided and I was able to run un-hampered. Pace was probably a little faster than I would have planned but went with it anyway. I had a good running partner (Thanks Helen:)) so went with the flow but this was probably more easy pace that Long Slow pace if i followed the Macmillan calc to the letter. It was a nice run on a very pleasant morning, not as warm as it is now thank God . The right hamstring that I felt very early on bothered me a little after the run so have to keep an eye on that. Some icing today should hopefully sort it out.

    13.06 miles @ 8:44avg

Sorry about that! I've been congratulating you all day on keeping us to a nice, even, easy pace this morning. Hope your hamstring is OK and it wasn't this morning that damaged it?

Thanks for the company - really enjoyed it.

No problem Helen. Think it was down more to not being properly hydrated(ie the beers last night!).I'm almost an expert in hamstring injuries at this stage, since I've had so many and this one doesn't worry me too much. Nothing a bit of minding and a couple days rest won't sort. As we discussed earlier, sometimes it's good to be taken out of your comfort zone.;)

    Monday 20th May

    Rest

    Tuesday 21st May

Plan was to do a short one at easy pace tonight and see how the leg was. 2 miles in and the hamstring niggle I picked up on Sunday started to bother me. Reduced pace to a jog for another mile and then decided to stop to minimise any damage I might be doing. Unfortunately was still about a mile and a half from home so had to walk the rest of the way home:(

Had to go to a confirmation mass for the first born so couldn't ice the leg until I got home later. I think a few days off running is required to let this heal and Dunboyne 5 mile next Tuesday could be in doubt.
I've a sports massage scheduled for Thursday too so maybe that will aid in speeding up the healing process too. Damned hamstrings, the bane of my life!

Had a massage today...err well actually yesterday. Slight inflammation in hamstring close to adductor. Got a good rub down, legs feeling tired now. Hopefully healing process will accelerate now and I'll be ok for race on Tuesday. I'll stay off the roads for next two days at least and maybe go out for a short one on Sunday to see what its like.

Need to get my act together too and put a plan together for lead up to HM (which I've yet to choose) and get good base in for beginning of marathon training.

On the plus side , got new club singlet and t-shirt today. Can't wait to officially wear it in a race sometime.

    Friday 24th May

Alcohol, pizza, ice-cream, alcohol.....say no more

    Saturday 25th May

30 mins on static bike (16km) and some stretching. Leg still a bit tender. Will decide tomorrow whether to try short recovery run or wait till Monday. Tuesday race very doubtful, too risky I think at this stage. THinking I should just concentrate on getting back running and slowly increase the mileage again.I really want to have about 6 weeks solid training behind me before starting marathon training. If I race too early that could put that in jeopardy. I'm thinking out loud here but this is probably the sensible thing to do given my history.

Hi RR I'm going to stick my nose in here and say that I think you're running some of your runs a bit too fast since you came back from injury. I was reading an article recently (can't find it now but I'll have a better look later) and it was saying that one of the biggest mistakes people make when they return from injury is to jump in at the same level they were at before they got injured and this leads to further injuries. Just something to think about maybe.....

I know RK sometimes just need to type it out on here to make myself see sense. CM's words in particular are ringing in my ears the last couple of days

Went up to StAnnes Park in Raheny this morning to do a short slow run. Beautiful morning for it. Leg feeling ok but I think 4 miles was just enough. Bumped into Richard Bruton on the run (not literally...though maybe I should have thrown him a shoulder on the way past:pac:)

Unfortunately for me I don't think I will hit my target time if I am not well on the way to hitting 1000 for the year if I haven't already hit it by DCM. From my perspective the two are closely related.
