RIP to the deceased and I hope his family can get over this. They've a tough number of years.

On the issues of "safety" - we might live in what one would call a "relatively" low crime invironment however some of our capital cities streets needs to be sorted out. The sheer number of scumbags, druggies and alcos is somewhat concerning. It's not just about "moving them" to the next street, one has to ask why there are so many?
Indeed I've begun to see more an more of these people in Limerick and indeed Galway as well and I would have genuine concerns for their own safety and the safety of others in years to come, particularly those with drug problems.

Not saying the deceased or indeed the story in general has anything to do with this mind.

Another of our young citizens with what should have been his entire life ahead of him lies dead, the victim of yet another scumbag with a knife no doubt. Some of the things I've seen in the Dublin streets over the years makes me think that the scum well and truly own the streets and can act with impunity. I'm sure other Irish cities have similar problems. I cringe sometimes at the idea of the Gathering - bringing tourists over to witness and report back on the spectical of smacked out heroin addicts lurching around town, and the experience of getting intimidated at ATM's and Luas machines on a constant basis. Don't even get me started on the Dublin boardwalks

Terrible for the rest of the family. RIP

Condolences to the family. Maybe you should start a new thread on how terribly unsafe Ireland is and all the wonderful travels you have been on?

But it stops being the sort of random act of violence that the OP was wringing his hands about when he was bemoaning how hard it is for the ordinary decent citizen these days.

Agreed, however, one cannot disagree that random acts of violence are still a problem in our nations capital and in other towns and cities across the country. Its easy to see how the OP jumped to such a conclusion, whether he was wrong or right.

I'd imagine most find the current story more shocking than if it was a random act of violence which says a lot.

Sure, there's lots of random petty crime but how many random murders do we actually see in this state? Sure, junkies are a bit of a nuisance and muggings I suppose are common enough but tbf it's usually pretty easy to avoid hassle in Dublin.

    No, incorrect..

Mahon was walking the streets on €400 bail / €400 surety

    The sentence was not suspended.

Who said it was 'terribly unsafe'?

Safety is safety, what's that mean?

Should this not raise questions over Amy's disappearance now?

Judge Ann Watkin described the 42-year-old's dangerous driving as "horrendous" and said he had told "blatant lies". She added that he had shown no remorse and it was a miracle he had not killed other motorists as she imposed the jail term and a five-year ban.

God, what a scumbag. The obvious question is where was he when Amy went missing a 10min walk from her home in Spain.

I was only in the supermarket an hour ago and saw the book on Amy for sale. :(

One of the things that struck me about this case at the time was why the hell did they use that picture of her that they did in the missing poster? The one where she was dressed up like a teen hooker.Surely they had some normal pictures of her that they could have used?

May have been the most recent. The mum probably didn't think twice about giving the most recent to the press.

    From the article;

The defence lawyer asked the judge to suspend the sentence and said Mahon's
stepdaughter had gone missing five years ago; his partner, Audrey depended on
him and his father was in poor health.

The judge refused but ordered that Mahon could be released on bail to appeal
the verdict in his own bond of €400, half of which must be lodged along with an
independent surety in the sum of €400.

This was the one they put up in the local area in the days following her disappeareance. It was a pic of her in some kind of fancy dress outfit that left little to the imagination.I thought it was a very strange choice.

Mr Fitzpatrick (23) is the brother of Amy Fitzpatrick, who went missing in Spain in 2008 at the age of 15. He and his sister were their mother Audrey’s and father Christopher’s only children.

They've lost both their children, god how would anyone ever get over that. Very tragic, it would break your heart thinking about what turmoil they must be going through.

"Released without charge - preparing file for DPD" .... What exactly does that mean? You hear it a lot after questioning of suspects but I never understand exactly whats involved. Is it simply that's all questions asked & DPD decides next step. Just curious now cause I find this case interesting & my heart goes out to the parents. Your worst nightmare..

Usually means that the guards will examine the evidence and see if they have a chance of getting a conviction, before bringing the case to the DPP.

It usually indicates that the investigation has reached its limit.

That's pretty unusual... this killing only happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, and already a file has been sent to the DPP. It may indicate that Gardaí are unsure whether to bring a murder offence or some lesser offence, e.g. manslaughter by way of self defence.

I think it means the Gardai are assembling all evidence for the DPP, it's also very possible that they think there is more evidence to be collected, more statements to be taken etc etc, then the DPP will decide if there is enough evidence for charges to be brought.

Obviously based on today's events, they do not have enough evidence to bring charges at this time.
