I think The Late Late is like Mass people feel obliged to watch it.

Any suggestions as to how we can enlighten the Plain People of Ireland?

    Like TV3?

They could show The Angelus 24/7 on RTÉ and it would still be better than any of the tripe shown on TV3.

They could certainly be scaled down. While I think they do a great job of sports coverage and (some) current affairs, they undo their good work by putting shows like "Show me the bedsit renovation" and "How Clean is Amanda Brunker's Garden". These are the shows they put in their prime time slots while huge shows like Sons of Anarchy and The Wire fester in a RTE 2 graveyard slot at 2am.

TV3 doesn't cover itself in glory either but it has shown that a private broadcaster is feasible in Ireland, the current RTE model is completely unrealistic.

RTE provide a decent service to many Irish people, they're not a waste money, not everybody has internet connection or is computer savy. The young freepups sometimes forget this.

    Is that you Pat/Ryan /Marion/Hector???

It would probably be a lot more cost effective to provide the PC hardware, broadband and computer literacy training then!

Tbh I find rte a million times better than the vast majority of channels on sky/UPC, so don't mind the charge. Plus it helps get me some extra work every now and then :-)

An organisation that gives Hector a job and pays Marion half a million for occasionally showing up is either pampered out of reality or management are all work experience trainees.

Of course you have to pay the broadcast charge, included in that is internet use etc..
RTE could spend some of their money more wisely but both RTE TV & Radio do deliver a wide range of services that are necessary for a country. Current affairs coverage is suberb on News now and radio.
Sports wise they are average I wish they had the Heineken Cup/Lions tour though.
Drama is pretty good Love/Hate + Raw supplemented with some decent foreign shows Revenge/The Good Wife etc.
Could do a little better on the comedy front shows like How I met your mother would be good etc..

Now it's true that some within RTE are overpayed, but it's a culture that is dying out...they can't just slash wages of their top earners.

The TV License is transforming into an Internet Tax now; they're still calling it a 'broadcasting charge' or whatever, but that is bullshít, it's an Internet tax.

If they are going to tax the Internet, then scrap RTE and give us a national broadband network (will give us something actually useful for the money then); if they are taxing Internet usage, then bloody use it to provide that as a service.

I'd be happy if they stopped pissing public money against the wall. Its not just the broadcasters who are raking it in, RTE employees behind the scenes are as well.

I was flicking over last night and caught a glimpse of Anne Doyle on the late late...my heart sank. She was a news reader who retired a year ago and for some reason they thought she would be a good guest. Unless she has contracted some std by shagging a monkey in the Congo I can't see what she has done in the past year since they had a big farewell party for her that would be of merit to warrant an appearance on a chat show. I give up. That's what we're paying for. Tubridy get's an exorbitant salary to interview his retired colleagues and we're expected to say, "Ah sure isn't Anne lovely."

If it continues like this they will never see a cent from me, broadcast charge or whatever they want to call it.

    Without the license fee
1)RTE would not be able to pay Joe Duffy his monstrous wages
    2) Without Joe liveline would not be made.
    3) Without liveline there would be no liveline thread
    4) Without a liveline thread boards would have to close

That is the only logical and rational argument for paying a license fee.

Anytime I come across it there's a cancer victim on,Ann Doyle would be a bonus for that show.

This is a good point. The vast number of RTE producers versus actual programming output makes very little sense, and these producers are very well paid.

That said RTE are not bad. Their news and current affairs coverage is generally decent as is the sport coverage. They have made some decent drama (some absolute shockers too). I have no problem with the license fee but I would like to see it better spent. Id love to see the breankdown of what portion salary costs in their overall spend.

It's not even an Internet charge that they are proposing. It will be assumed that you have access to some form of visual external communication and are therefore liable for the tax. It will be up to you to prove otherwise.

The only thing half worth watching on RTE is Sharon Ní Bheoláin.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,244 ✭✭✭lycan238

Ok lets be serious here for a moment.

We pay €3.08 a week for access to a website that is kept up to date with news stories from around the world, sports coverage* that is very good to excellent especially GAA Hurling and LOI, shows like Love/Hate, Raw and indeed Liveline on the radio.

In fairness for 3.08** euro a week I think that is excellent value for money.

    * indeed outside of the listed sports improvements could be made.
** You have the option of paying €13.13 a month instead of the €160 up front.

Possibly the most over-rated ''personality'' on Irish TV.

I just had to google him. He sounds annoying. Nearly as annoying as his actual name sounds.

What if you dont watch GAA? 3 quid a week for news? why not just use any of the countless news websites for free?

I watch the GAA most of the time (mainly online now) I watch english soccer highlights and LOI sometimes. I am talking about my opinion on the value for money out there.

You would spend much much more money in a pub watching the sport. get a few mates around a few cans (minerals for me) and enjoy the banter.

Exactly, the talent simply isn't there, not that there isn't talent in Ireland, there is, it's just RTE is a who you know or are related to club. the supposed flagship "entertainment" show is hosted by someone with the personality of a tea towel.

I don't think you know what the term 'value for money' means.

i think if we didn't pay a licence rte would broadcast a lot more commercials to make ends meet. IN other countries such as Australia Canada and america there is twice the amount of commercials rte broadcast. america is beyond a joke for commercials and none of those countries pay tv licences.

Why send a rte reporter to melbourne (recent murder case)to read back a report on any subject, rte can get newsreel off another media company and provive audio to the clip. Its as bad when they send brian dobson to rome when a new pope comes, and dobson interviews another rte reporter.

I don't watch Rte and I really resent having to pay a license fee for something I don't use. Rte channels should be optional, if you want them you pay a license fee, if you don't then you don't pay. Its ridiculous and they'd be gone in a year if they gave people the choice to opt out.

Harsh to be honest. I'm no huge fan of RTE, but it's the cool thing to say it's **** when to be honest for attempting to provide a complete package to a small country it really isn't all that bad...

RTE is a collection of po-faced window-licking blithering idiots who wouldn't know a decent piece of television if it bit them on the arse-cheek, and I do not want it. Nevertheless, this being Ireland the Gummint will send me to jail if I don't pay for it. That is how business is done in Ireland, and that is how a load of inbred mutants like Ryan Tubridy, Lucy Kennedy and her grandmother Mary, Miriam O'Callaghan, Hector O'Whatshisname etc. are able to pull down ridiculous salaries for doing... whatever it is they do.
