Would you consider RTE a waste of TV licence money. They don't even make great TV programming.

One thing I would like to know is why have we still to pay TV license when rte is sky and we pay enough for sky as it is. Its not even a free view channel on sky.

Well apparently for ever €1 in tv licence fees they contribute €2 to the economy. Irish times analysed the report that stated this and it turns out RTE even included staff buying irish made yogurt in the local supermarkets as part of the contribution. But that such RTE thing to do. Message the **** out things so it good for them

Their sports coverage is decent, excellent at times. They cover GAA well, they cover most of the big world sporting events, they have premiership hilights, rugby internationals etc. Their news and currant affairs gets a lot of criticism for being soft on the government, to be honest I don't notice it being much different to the rest. I listen to radio 1 in the car quite a bit and I find it good. Out of all the crap i have to pay the one thing that pains me the most is the tv licence to massage these overpaid idiots wages.
RTE say they have to pay it or they will leave-are they for real?What real broadcasting company would take on these idiots like Ryan Tubridy,Marion Finucan or Hector at these wage levels?
I'd say they might get offered 80/100k anywhere else tops yet we pay them multiples of that.
Imagine our licence fee is fairly similar to the UK and the quality of programing the BBC produce is outstanding.I know they have a bigger population hence a lot more money but they don't get ad revenue.
I mean come on they get the likes of Frozen Planet and we get Sheila fupping Sheikh and that mortifying scratch card game on a saturday night!
Rant over I guess i just hate the waste and incompetence from Montrose.

Must add I would have no bother paying the fee if these bumpkins wages were dropped in line with their talent and the money better used for quality programming and not to subsidise staff meals and childcare and two freaking orchestras.:mad:

Agree. I can't believe people actually get sent to jail for not paying tv licences and they're there paying the likes of ryan tubridy 400k +

Neither are TV3 or TG4.

TV license doesn't fund Sky - You choose to pay a subscription to Sky, as presumably there's something in their package that appeals to you.

RTE services are available with no subscription via an aerial or their own Saorsat service.

RTE negotiate for rights on a ROI basis only. If the signal were broadcast unencrypted, RTE would beam into the UK & beyond and international content providers would demand significantly higher royalties for the purchase of rights to air their shows. Your TV license fee would sky-rocket accordingly.

Nah, it's shít cos it's shít. There's nothing cool about saying something that's blindingly obvious.

They're far too conservative and old fashioned and need to ditch the grannies and get with the times

They should provide more opportunities for young actors. The wages is also a big issue. It's also a service you have to pay for, whether you use it or not.

My sons friend's parents don't have a tv, they watch DVDs on the PC. They had to pay their license fee because 'it's available to them'

TV license is just another stealth tax.

Why have so many news readers?

They waste the TV tax to justify it.

I like their Documentaries on One radio series. Very entertaining. Don't see how something like this would be covered by a private broadcaster. I also admire their impartiality. They don't always get it right, but it's an impossible task to present a show that doesn't offend someone. Usually the type of morons who exist on being in a state of perpetual outrage.

Having to pay a licence fee to support a public service broadcaster really doesn't bother me that much. I think they do more good than bad considering their limited resources.

The amount of repeats on RTE is shocking. They were ****e the first time around. Please don't inflict them on us again. As for the Late Late... Utter tripe. Just let it go RTE.. Use our license fee to entertain us please!

While RTE do a lot of crap telly, they don't just do crap telly. As opposed to the likes of TV3 for example, who take crap telly to previously unimagined levels of crapness.

They do some other worthwhile stuff too. RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, the RTÉ Vanbrugh Quartet, the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, RTÉ Cór na nÓg and the RTÉ Philharmonic Choir. Lots of people employed here, and they seem to at least break even.

Radio one, 2fm, Lyric fm.

Not everybody's cup of tea, of course, but they do more than Fair City, and a lot of it they do very well.

Nearly every post has been about d'telly. There's more to RTE than d'telly, and in fairness folks, there's more to life than d'telly.
