European Tour chief O'Grady in 'coloured' controversy

European Tour chief George O'Grady has exacerbated the Sergio Garcia race row by using racially insensitive language while trying to defend the Spaniard.

On Wednesday, Garcia apologised for his 'fried chicken' remark about Tiger Woods earlier this week.

But in attempting to mitigate Garcia's comment, O'Grady then used the term "coloured".

"We accept all races on the European Tour - most of Sergio's friends happen to be coloured athletes," he said.

The world is gone mad. I blame x-factor and social media.

    Getting very silly now alright.

In some countries the term "coloured" is controversial, in some countries its apparently not. It changes with time.
Same with the word "black", imagine the uproar if he'd said "most of Sergio's friends are black" ?? Yet there's an association of black police officers in the UK.

Surely no one is suggesting George O'Grady is racist !!

    PC gone mad.

I love the way so many people on here feel they know what Tiger, and other black people should consider racist.
How many of you have ever had to deal with racism?
As a white male in Ireland I've never been discriminated against because of my skin color

Saying a white person is white is not racist.

This for me is where all of this gets blurry and a little grey.
Is it alright to make a crack about serving potatoes to Irish and paella to Spanish but not fried chicken ?
You can argue that Irish and Spanish are national whereas fried chicken is aimed at a specific group rather than a nation.

Is it ok to call someone a white pr**k but not ok to call them a black one ?
I'm never sure on this....as I say grey.

If he had said "I will serve McDonalds every night" there would not have been a problem, as that is a jibe at all Americans. There is no other reason to make it about fried chicken than the fact that Tiger is a black American.

Who ever calls someone a white pr**k? What have white people got to feel hard done by about? Is white a derogatory adjective?

Coloured has fallen out of favour in the US and the UK. Black is fine in the UK, Ireland etc, but not so much in the US. African American is the safest bet in the US, regardless of whether they originally came from Jamaica or wherever. Oh and if you are a white American of South African origin apparently its not cool to call yourself African American..!

Can you not keep up no? :D

You mentioned sun beds, thus implying the paleness or need for colour on his or Irish skin.
By your very own reckoning above, If some section of Irish people feel this statement referring to their pale skin is derogatory, then you've made a racist comment.... By your reckoning.

For the record, I couldn't care less, I think all this PC gone mad.

But if you're putting yourself on a pedestal......

That's exactly the point, just why can't a white American of South African descent call themselves African American ? thats what they are. Same as someone calling themselves Irish American.
No doubt in a few years someone else will have decided that terms in use today are offensive and so on and so on. Pretty soon we'll have gone full circle and be back using a term deemed offensive 5 years ago.
In my book, it's not the words that should determine a phrase being racist or not, it's the intention and context that they're used in. If people can't use certain words in a non offensive manner now, maybe it's gone too far.
George O'Grady clearly isn't racist, his interview was precisely to point out the anti racist stance of the ET, anyone who thinks he was offensive or insensitive maybe needs to get a thicker skin and be less easily offended.

Ha, ha, ha. Spuds and the Irish..................hilarious:o In fact I suggest you try it and see what the outcome might be http://www.topix.com/forum/world/ireland/TKDB3NH09BF93ITBK
I've no doubt the uproar would be greater than this.

But then I'm biased - wrong as Tiger often is, he will get a free pass for anything short of murder for taking on those white, republican, tartan slacks wearing, Augustans and beating them on their own turf. It was almost as bad as having a woman win.:D

It amused me while reading this thread that Tigers tweet was being used a stick to beat him while not one of the posters referring to it actually said what he tweeted, just para phrased to suit their own angle. Easily amused? Yeah probably, I just get a laugh off people when they can't hide their bias :)

Hopefully we can move on now, would have liked the Tour to be a bit firmer on it, but wouldn't expect it so thats that

If Sergio had said "Ya I'll have him around for dinner but I'll have to lock away my girlfriend" would there have been a bigger reaction?

And poor O'Grady. You can't open your mouth now on TV without someone trying to slant everything sideways and make a big furore about it.

Hard to tell, there wasnt a huge reaction imo, probably because Garcia is on this side of the Atlantic at the moment, interesting to see what happens when he goes to the U.S. I guess

It shouldnt cause more of a fuss then a racist comment though, a low blow yes, but better then racist

Is using the word "coloured" really all that bad? Alan Hansen said the same thing on Match of the Day and got into bother over it. I can think of worse words to use...
