No, it is 16v (80hp) engine. Engine itself is nice to drive - same one was in Bravo, and Stilo. Not sure about the gearbox.
As with every Punto hit and miss really...

Pity I can't get an insurance quote for it

Got a quote for 250 for the next 3 months until expiry. And then liberty dropped the bombshell! It has no nct for the last 9 months!:(

The non-colour coded mirrors on those was criminal negligence design-wise.

So it has no NCT now, or had none for last 9 months?
    Has it been tested recently?

Ad doesn't claim it has a current NCT. Up to the buyer to find that out. Serious bargaining chip though :D

What are they like? Are they the standard 1.2 engine mated to a six speed box? I'd imagine they'd be a nippy shopping trolley:). How well do they hold together?

Grand little car, 6 speed makes for a nice zippy drive, 80bhp 16v engine (a peach of an engine), well put together except for the gearknob  handles well as standard

Hadlights can become cloudy due do a blocked breather. Gear linkage cables become weak with persistent rough/aggressive gearchanging. Door handles may become sticky with lack of use. Electric power steering...... Grrrr!!!!!

All in all a decent example will wear well :)

How's insurance on them compared to a regular punto?

A bit more expensive (has 20 odd bhp more and Sporting in the title) but still very reasonable. Probably cheaper to insure one than the 406 I currently drive.... :(

406 is not comparable to Punto tbh... 2 different cars.
Punto sporting should be insurance-friendly. I drove Bravo on provisional with same engine and it was cheap enough.

The only thing i forgot to mention was headgasket, but this was an issue in regular 1.2 too. As long as your mechanic won't put it upside down this should be cheap enough to fix.

I assumed it had one, don't know why...
The seller claims however he has all paperwork, nct included which could lead to assumption it has one...
It doesn't have one apparently, price goes down few hundreds then for potential buyer:D

Yeah liberty told me the minute i gave them the reg that the car hadnt had a valid nct for the last 9 months. Feck its an alfa. I like them, but no nct for 9 months, id be wanting it for free nearly.

I assumed it had one as well from the ad. It read like it did, but when i checked it after getting off the phone with liberty, it clearly didn't.

If its still for sale on monday week i might go have a look.

Exactly. What I would do is show up, make sure the car is good and I want to buy it. Then ask for the NCT cert. Which he doesn't have. Then mention that the ad sad something about NCT and so I assumed it was tested. Then look disappointed. Very disappointed. Say you really like the car but you are taking a big risk. Then produce €700 in cash. See if he's gonna refuse that :D

Damn, I'm tempted to go there now myself :D

The kids are slightly bigger, the baby seats are gone and my next car does not have to be very big, a D-segment car will do for size...

That is interesting, would they insure it, or refuse straight away?

Some people here claim insurance companies don't care about nct at all...apparently they do.

They asked if I already owned it, which I don't. I was more concerned as to whether they'd even insure me on a v6!:) should have asked about a v8 while I was at it.
I still think they'll insure you if the car was between ncts or else half the country would be uninsured now.

clean looking altezza, even with the wrong engine/ gearbox combo.

8 months test, a little over 2 months tax, asking 1250. lots of car for the money. i'd say its thirsty though.

They're pretty slow too. Used to get to drive a customers sport design auto pretty often, and it was more of a cruiser. 4 speed box infuriating. Similar to a mk1 avensis box.

D321 kinda box, had a sport mode for hanging on to the revs a bit more. I remember at the time I had an FTO at the time with the INVECS-II box and it was in a different league despite being much older.

Belongs to a good friend of mine, and it's actually been a great car for him for the last year he has it, for those sharper folk of you yes that's my driveway and I did spend 3 hours getting it looking like it does in the pics, I hope MM would be proud..:D

It passed it's recent NCT needing exhaust work and a cv boot. Other than that he's selling due to an erasmus year in college and needs the car gone. I think it's priced well relative to other Golf's of that vintage. I'm amazed at how reliable it's been for him tbh, only ever heard bad things and experienced them myself about these cars. This one has been surprisingly excellent.

your handywork looks very good 166! you may do mine before the meet :pac:

i know its probably common knowledge that im no golf fan, but i'm sure you wont be offended if i say 1250 tops for that car, should be in the dreamer thread at 1700 :P

as for the altezza, a few years back i was briefly driving an is200 (manual) and found it to be rather slow, so i can only imagine how hateful it is attached to a 4sp auto. that said, if i wasn't doing much driving that altezza would be decent for cruising around in imo.

Cheers! I'm learning but the car needed it and it came up very well. Used plenty of compounds to try and eradicate the swirls as much as possible. Coated with three polishes and wax.

You'll have yours done before the meet I know you will!

I'm not Golf fan either by any means but €1700 is competitive relatively speaking for one of those. They hold their value well and I can see him getting €1500 for it tbh.

    2l 2000 Altezza for 1250 = 1.4 2002 Golf for 1700
First one will go for 1000, and the second for close to 1500 euro.
Golfs hold their value well here hence the price. Quite a difference to tax it. Golf will sell much easier than Altezza.

I can't speak for other peoples experiences or other insurance companies but FBD will. Last time round I was shopping around after 123.ie upped the premium considerably (no surprises there). FBD were the only provider that alerted me to the fact the car had no NCT (which I knew myself).

Told her I had it booked and she was hemming and hawing about it for a few moments. At first she said she wouldn't give me cover until I get car tested. Then when she realised she may be loosing a client she sort of backtracked and said she could provide me with third party only cover until I got car tested and then TPF&T from when I get it tested....which doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me either....

Anyway I think they probably won't give you cover by right if you have no NCT but something tells me its not a hard and fast rule that they must abide by. They'll most likely give you cover as loose a potential client...well in the case of FBD anyways after my experience.

    Sorry for off topic post:)

oh i agree, he probably will get close to the asking for it. particularly with the well worded add, good photos and a clean car.

its just not worth that :pac: so much nicer **** you could be driving for even 1700 quid. does it even have electric windows or central locking?:P

in terms of cleaning : you'd be disheartened cleaning a car this weather. sunny one minute, torrential hail the next. cleaned it about 4 times last week and betweent the weather and the sparrows nesting in the garage eves ****ting on it around 50 times a day, you're kind of left feeling "why bother".

Aye. Mitsubishi was one of the first Asian companies to pay royalties to Porsche for the use of their superior automatic tranny system. Nowadays pretty much every big car company in the world uses the Porsche system

Except some companies (like Toyota, Nissan and Audi) hanging on to the Dutch developed (in the '50s I think) and owned continuously variable transmission (CVT) system

To be fair, the ecvt system in the toyota hybrids is genius and owes nothing to a traditional cvt system.

Hondas is the conventional type though.

    Waaaaaaay off topic!

I'd be betting he will alright.

I was thinking that, you could buy one good Alfa 156 and another for parts for the money you'd buy that for though. No electric windows and no central locking either.

Nah this was a full detar, clay cleanse polish and wax kind of job, the car will be filthy tomorrow probably but at least the prep is done making it easier to clean again in the future.

If I had €1700 I'd actually be very tempted by a Toyota Levin in black... I keep looking at them these days... I think I'm losing my fanboi-ness...:pac:
