I know they won't read this, but the invigilator in the Iontas shouting through the microphone at people to be quiet as they leave the exam hall should realise that he is making more noise than anyone else.

They should also take note that my turned off tablet under the table, under my smart phone, is not some kind of voodoo magic device that can help me cheat from all the way down there turned off .

Why on earth smart phones are ok turned off under the desk, but tablets are not to be trusted, is beyond me.

I don't think they have the capacity to deal with anything outside their regular routine. I forgot my student card yesterday and had my drivers licence as proof of ID and the guy was only short of peeling the laminate off it to see if I had some form of notes inside it.

Either that or they love the feeling of power that comes with it.

By bringing anything into the exam hall, you are asking for it to be checked. They are checked to stop people cheating, passing the exam on to people outside (for whatever reason), keep notes out of the hall and to limit noise disruption. The amount of times phones go off simply because people don't put their phones on silent.
Long and short of it, if you don't want it checked, don't bring anything into the hall.

Also, it's not a feeling of power, it's doing a bloody job to make sure your exams go smoothly.

I've been a student for a lot longer than I have an invigilator and felt the same then as I do now.

So why would a tablet be taken from me, yet my smart phone sitting under the desk is fine?

Smart phones are just small tablets that can make phone calls.

Every single page of notes I have is stored on my tablet and I travel by bus and rail. I bring it so I can revise on the journey.

If they allow smart phones under the desk, they should allow tablets.

Has this even been discussed? Because over the next few years there will be more and more people with tablets. And if the people setting the rules are out of touch with technology, maybe somebody just needs to let them know that there isn't really a difference between smart phones and tablets. Well actually a smart phone would be much easier to cheat with, and also more likely to cause an accidental disturbance.

Last exam over and done with, in some ways these past 4 years flew and in others it dragged. To those of you not in final year I wish you all the best of luck in the coming years. To those of you in final year and are finished, get a job you free loaders :P

The invigilators don't make the rules - that's up to the exams office. I'm sure you can email them if you want to make a suggestion.

Kisaragi is right, we don't make any rules. We are given the rules, told to follow them! You do make a good point though, definitely email the exams office. They had to change the rules about mobile phones to adapt then, so they will more than likely have to adapt again.

In my opinion under our desks we should be able to keep turned off phones as well as tablets and laptops (in cases?). I was a commuter last year and many times I was forced to keep my laptop outside the exam hall because I needed to use my laptop before the exam and I did not have friends with cars/living in Maynooth. i.e. my laptop was at risk of being robbed about 10 times. I know that there are many people who are in the exact position now. I'm not giving out about it, Im just giving my own opinion.

I'd say if you're that worried about it you could always invest €15 in a locker. Though I wouldn't worry, in every exam I've had in Maynooth there's been at least one person stationed outside with all the bags.

It's midnight, the day of my last exam has dawned. My study resolve has gone out the window, I honestly think the last two weeks have used it up. I'm so ready for summer, c'monnnnnnn...

Back in MY day *farts dust* folk would slip their smartphone, on silent, with all their notes on it into their sock before the exam. And when they were stuck, ask to use the bathroom.

Do they perform any kind of check on people using the bathroom? One guy from my class uses it without fail during every exam.....and it's blatantly obvious why.

Although I have seen someone walk into the exam and write their notes straight onto the answer book before the start of an exam as invigilators walk around.

And while I am ranting about invigilators....how difficult is it to start an exam on time...or if you're not capable of that at least add on the time at the end.

I thought you could bring any valuables into the exam if you put it under your desk, electronics switched off obvs, no??
    That's stupid if you can't.

I had a calculator with me for my exam last week (that I hadn't used in a while) and after starting the exam the invigilator took the cover and walked off. Alarm bells went off in my head that I had written something on it in the past and began to freak.

After the exam I asked the guy what the story was and he said anything with writing has to go to the examinations office. Bearing in mind whatever was on it had nothing to do with the exam I was about to take, and I'm fully aware of my stupidity for not checking it myself in advance, how strict are they about this kind of thing?

I'm terrified of the outcome now. I emailed the office on Friday but no reply as of yet. Debating whether to go in or not.

Dreading the results in june. I had 2 exams last week, the same lecturer, for Irish economy and Int.finance. I have no ida what I'll get as exam was essay type and she's a tough marker. A minimum of 63 will get me a 2.1. I'm sweating thinking about this, who knows what will happen on the day of getting the results. Maybe **** my pants.

I had an invigilator pick up my wallet and rifle through it today. I'm not ok with that. Not at all.

    wtf?

In all my years doing exams in Maynooth, I never had my pencil case/anything checked or saw invigilators checking anyone else's. I did my exams in JH though. Maybe they're not as strict seeing as the room is a lot smaller and there's less people than the sports halls so it would be easier to notice someone cheating.

It was in rye hall. It wasn't my first exam in rye hall, but it was my first exam where someone went through my wallet. He then went on to go through the girl's pencil case in front of me, the girl's wallet in front of her and the guy's glasses case beside me.

Was it on the floor? If not then I'd kinda understand.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭Fbjm

No, it was on the table since it had my student card in it. Oh well, live and learn.

Anyone had any experience with the Examinations Office staff? Are they approachable?

I've had an invigilator go through my wallet in all of my exams, and yes it's under the desk. Don't get why they go through things that are on the floor I thought you're not allowed touch those things anyway in an exam?

@ that person talking about calculators they always check mine and it has writing inside the cover I think like about the calculator and they've never taken it away ?
