I cannot comprehend why any sane, reasonably educated adult watches soaps.

I can understand why alright. I don't see the point of wasting time watching them, and I certainly don't watch them myself (or in fact any decent amount of TV!), but I think it's something to with that whole nosiness/gossip of people, (particularly women - which is why it is mostly women who watch the soaps).

The get to peak into the lives of 'real life characters' (bit of an oxymoron I know!), safe in the knowledge that it'll go on forever (or at least a lot longer than Lost, Breaking Bad, and any other TV shows that I really can't think of at the moment.

It's always been an interesting one to me aswell though as to why people are so "addicted" to the soaps.

If people want to watch premiership football, let them pay for Sky and keep it off the national broadcaster.

The Lions Tour is a load of ****e really. Hyped up to the last when it's basically just a post-season holiday. If people criticise the Ryder Cup for being over-rated, then the same should apply to the Lions tour.

And don't get me started on the Rugby World Cup.

Men are just as, if not more gossipy than women, which is why there are more male talk show hosts than female. The only reason that women are protrayed as more gossipy is that women take the bait and react more when they are accused of it. Men are more likely to ignore criticism or tell you to grow a thicker skin. I have four brothers and the bitching from them is unreal. When men slag each other off it's known as "banter" but when women do the same it's "bitching" because they are jealous or insecure

I think The Notebook is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. Some of my girlfriends just refuse to believe that I feel this way.

I think Keanu Reeves is so out of this world good looking that it just doesn't matter that he's a crap actor.

    I think Adele is over-rated.

I like and admire Joan Burton and would like to see her get her revenge on Gilmore by becoming leader of the labour party.

    The end.

Im not sure if this one has been done but i think we should be able to have another referendum on abortion except it has to be completely public where everybody's choice is recorded.

Those that vote no should have to pay more taxes to cover the cost of an increased population and the increase in social care costs that come from neglected children that some parents did not want to have. Alternatively, their state pension should be reduced

If abortion is not introduced, the population is going to continue to rise. Ireland now has the highest birth rate in the Eu which is shocking considering our population of around 4 million compared to that over the entire EU which i believe is just over 500 million people.

If you want to allow for measures such as abortion that could help restrict the population from further growth, great but why should everybody else pay for the side effects of that decision?

Id second that opinion when the national broadcaster behaves like a national broadcaster instead of operating policies of unfair competition.

The €160 tv license fee only goes to RTE and the likes of TV3 get nothing and still have to try and compete, whereas, RTE get revenue from both the license fee and the advertising.

If they are gonna charge €160 and make money from advertising, they can afford to get the purchase rights for premiership football.

If the RTE dont like that, let them become a real national broadcaster like the BBC.

Your opinions on Hendrix, Zeppelin and Muse are your own and that's fair enough, but hard rock is a terrible genre of music? Compared to what, out of interest?

Its the mainstream pop world's version of "heavy" music.

... but it's the women who are the target audience. Trust me - not self-respecting man ever admits to watch Jeremy Kyle or reading Hello!.
I don't watch Jeremy Kyle on a regular basis and I've read Hello a total of once. I stand by my post. If you watch daytime tv, it's usually two presenters - an older guy paired up with a younger woman. The guy has all the strong opinions and the woman tears up at a heartbreaking story.

It's different in the evenings. Most of the chat shows are hosted by men and their target audience tends to be dictated by age bracket, rather than gender. A prime example of this is the Late Late Show. It is the longest running chat show, has always been hosted by males and is one of the highest rated shows in Ireland.

I can accept that during the day the target audience is female as they traditionally stay at home but in the evening time, when both people are watching tv, it doesn't make any sense that the target audience would be female. The Late Late Show gets high ratings and that's because both males and females watch it.

My opinion may or may not be popular but I still think that men gossip as much as women, they're just not pulled up on it as much. A man gossiping has an opinion or is able to ask the hard questions, a woman doing the same thing is a hard nosed cow who is a disgrace to the sisterhood.

From watching tv, I have learned that there are two types of women presenters:

1: Oprah: the sickly sweet persona who will empathise with your probems and milk your personal tradegy for all it's worth.

2: Chesley Lately: the sarcastic pisstaker who will tear you to shreds.

It would be nice if we got a woman host who was a mix of Oprah and Chesley ie a rounded individual who has their good and bad points and not someone who is a caricature. I do like Ellen but she is a day time talk show host and not an evening one.

I'd agree with you about Zeppelin but I don't think Hendrix is overrated whatsoever. Although I'll forgive you since it seems like you're a fan of Slint.

Esentially, though, Men tend not to gossip about celebrities and entertaiment. We don't give a **** abotu who's going out with who or who's dumped who. We may if we know the people involved on a personal level, but that's just colluquial interest. We certainly tend not to repeat it as much, or try to gain kudos from being the first with the info.

I don;t think the gender of the talk show hosts is relevant. Also, while I don't watch them very much, I don't find them to be all that gossipy.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

The Notebook is a nice movie, good lighthearted entertainment and all that, but I have never cried whilst watching it, I just dont feel it that much, and no its not "as heartbreaking as Titanic"

We'll have to agree to disagree. I honestly believe that if women were the more gossipy sex, then more talk show hosts would be hosted by women. In general it's men who host them, so logically for me, men have no problem poking their nose into other people's business, but seeing as how we are conditioned to think that women are mindless gossip's, I'll just have to accept that for now, women are seen as the bitchy sex (who only criticise each other because they are jealous or insecure) and men are the rational sex who have balance opinions.

Fair enough, but I still don't see the assumption that a chat show is automatically gossip.

He was a great guitar player/song writer, but he is given far too much credit. Mitch Mitchell and Noel Redding never get a mention despite their talent.

There's a reason why the above "hasn't been done". It's because nobody was so ill informed up to now to post something so embarrassingly ill thought out.

I'd agree with that to an extent. I think Mitch Mitchell was a very underrated drummer.

What else is a chat show about? A guest comes on the show and they are asked about their life. Depending on how private they are, some of them might very open to the point of TMI and some of them are ao private that they come across as aloof.

I still stand by by point. During the day, most chat shows are hosted by an older guy and youner, empathatic woman because their target audience is women but in the evenings, the vast magority of shows are hosted by men. If men are not as gossipy or nosey as women, then please can you explain to me the success of male hosts?

That might be more to do with men being the dominant sex. It's linked with evolution I suppose. One could say that females are biologically less evolved than their male companions as they were always protected by the men in the group. It's still seen in society today with the case you presented above.

I completely disagree. For a start, if you paid me the amount of money that they're on, I'd gladly host a talk show for you. It doesn't mean I am in anyway "gossipy" though. It just means I like money!

Secondly, could it not have anything to do with the fact that women prefer watching chat shows hosted by men, for whatever reason, and as a result the male talk show hosts set out to exploit this.

Sounds like some sort of conspiracy theory here!!!!

Haha, what drugs are you on? Women aren't less biologically evovled. Just because they've bodies that evolved with different purposes to men doesn't mean there's any less evolution involved.

Having an interest in someone talking abotu their life is not gossip! Having an interest in someone talking about someone else's life is gossip. Most chat shows tend to stick to factual and practical information - they have to or they'd be sued.

And again, a man hosting a chat show does not mean men are just as gossipy as women. It might mean that particular man is, but if the majority of interested people are women, that kind of screws up your theory.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Exactly. I mean, the idea of judging the whole male human species on the basis of a few male chat show hosts is like saying the entire human race are drunkards because you take Ireland on a Saturday night as a sample.
