I half agree with what you're saying but isn't it some what ironic that they want to be just like everybody else yet feel the need to highlight their difference by having a day dedicated to it?
What about the fact that gay people aren't treated like everyone else?

PS I am not homophobic or racist!

Do you realise that we can tell more about a person's prejudices from the opinions they express rather than the declarations that they make? A person is not always aware of their prejudices, and if someone feels the need for a straight pride day then it says something interesting about their discomfort at seeing a minority gain public credibility.

A pride parade serves as a show of defiance against discrimination. What discrimination do you feel that straight people endure? Are you afraid that straight people are being sidelined, abused or under-represented in the world?

A straight parade is ridiculous for the same reason that a white advocacy group would be ridiculous in Ireland -- the same reason that it is ridiculous for Christians fuming over the "discrimination" they face in the USA ("how dare we not be allowed to use public funds to promote our religion!"), and for the same reason that cis-gendered people (ie, not transgendered) don't need a pride parade.

Advocating a straight pride parade shows a fundamental ignorance of the entire concept of a civil rights struggle, and smacks of a vague discomfort from a privileged person being asked to be ever so slightly less privileged in future.

Ahh I think they're great craic, more of a carnival atmosphere than the usual pervasive downtrodden negativity that some LGBT people have about themselves. I've always suggested they take the chips off their shoulders and let loose for a bit.

My wife does an awful facepalm though when I really get into the swing of things! :D

Yeah I agree with you. Certainly when I first realised my orientation I was very negative about it. Well, I mean negative about all these people who I felt I had nothing in common with, apart from the fact that we weren't straight. I was attracted to women but I was still the same me, I didn't want to get involved in the 'gay scene', I wanted to do things I liked and meet people through normal outlets.

I didn't like all the flamboyancy, the stereotypes, the bítchy drama.....but then when I loosened up and gave the gay scene a chance, it's actually a lot of fun and, while there's still a lot of annoying stereotypes, there's also a lot of really cool people. So I'm going to give gay pride a chance!! I still don't agree with the idea of it really. I understand that awareness needs to be made for equal rights, for sure. But I don't think gay pride is the way to do it.

Yes, but they want to be treated like everyone else so why take a day to highlight the reason for marginalisation. Hence the irony.

Is fabulous the gayest word ever?

    Yes, yes it is.

That's like asking why people don't just ignore things and hope they go away instead of having a protest or something.

I'm sick of having my fashion sense and home decor choices ridiculed on TV by gays.

Is it? So the best way to change society is to have a parade?

It's more like saying I want to be treated like everyone else but wahey, this is how I'm different from everyone!

I do understand however, as it's more to with oppression in my opinion than wanting to be viewed the same as everyone else.

We're really not flamboyant enough. It could be the WORST PARADE EVER.

It'd be like an Orange Order march without the banners and sashes. Just a bunch of old, bigoted white men walking somewhere to piss off others.

First off, I am in now way homophobic. I have wondered though what the reaction from the gay community would be if there was a heterosexual pride day where people marched on the streets and shouted their joy to be straight? If it ever happened, would those involved would be seen to be anti-gay. Again, I would like to stress that I am not homophobic. Would just like to hear opinions.

I'm for it. Id also like to see a white pride march.

Its not a protest, its a piss up and in my opinion a borderline minstrel show. How about an actual protest in solidarity with the gay people who get the **** kicked out od them by cops in countries where a Pride parade IS a protest.

It might mean sacrificing the body oil and the feather boas and the booze though, so I can't see it happening.

Plenty of white pride marches. I'm sure you could find one of you really wanted, as retarded as they are.

    March 17th.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I want a nose day. I have one i was born that way,its a part of me and a part of who i am. I just want to go out there and tell people, I have a nose and i am proud of it.

Telling my parents was the worst and best time of my life. I spoke to my mother first and told her out stright. "Mam i have a nose" She looked at me and smiled and said "I know" Apparently she started noticing from a very young age but that gave me the strength to tell my father, when i told him he looked at me confusingly. He said he is ok with it, but i know deep down he thinks its just a growth and maybe it will fall off some day.

I just thought it'd be a good idea to do that as well while we're at it (celebrating majority status)

Speaking as a straight white Irish man, when I look in the mirror,

    I don't see a straight man
    I don't see a white man
I don't see an Irish man
In fact I don't even 'see' a man.

    All I see is myself.

Because I have been fortunate enough never to have been marginalised in society my self-identity doesn't reflect these aspects.

well i'm a vampire, check your mirror privilege you reflecting scum.

But homosexuals are being socially accepted more and more every day. Will there come a day when they have more rights than heterosexuals?
On the tv debate program "the big question" there was a guy looking for equal rights for heterosexuals in the UK on the issue of civil partnerships. It was thought they might be proposing that homosexuals can have either civil partnerships or can marry while heterosexuals might not be allowed have a civil partnerships.

I think they should have the same rights in marriage, however I think there are too many benefits already, i.e. I would like to see all marriages or civil partnerships be of little or no financial benefit at all, and be pretty much unrecognised by the government regarding taxes, finances & property etc. If you want to give financial aid for children then do so, married or not.

    White heterosexual male pride day.

Can you imagine how that'd go down?

Well hopefully someone will be going down.

My understanding is civil partnerships would cease with marriage equality

It seemed unclear what was going to happen. This guy definitely said there was talk of there being the option of both in the UK, but only for homosexuals.

There were differences between the 2 of them, if thats what you were getting at, it was not just the same thing with a different name. There was some feminist on saying she knew lots of heterosexual couples who would love to get a civil partnership if they could, and did not want to marry.

For a test I put "gay pride ireland" into google images and this was the third image shown - now if gay people wanna have a parade, so be it. But I cant help but feel that if a large number of men and women were dancing down the street, half naked in a parade that WASNT anything to do with homsexuality ... the police would be called or the parade wouldnt get permission in the first place. It would be classed as "indecent", right? But yet that image above...

So there are double standards at play.

I look forward to your parade to prove/disprove your hypothesis

It would seem that the only purpose of a heterosexual pride day would be to try to annoy gay people. If there is any other point to the idea I'd be interested in hearing it.

How much you willing to bet :)

Let's get 50 male dancers wearing thongs & 50 female dancers wearing thongs and a string bikini top. We'll slap any ol' parade on top of it (1 rule, as long as its not gay) and lets see how long it lasts :) You saying it'll go down like a treat?

But wait... this is Ireland right? This wouldnt be the same country that closed down stringfellows a few years ago would it? with all moral do-gooders protesting? ...

I do look forward to you disproving me :)
