anyone know of any decent paleo store bought sauces/dressings? or a simple recipe for one?

Recipes for any particular kind of dressing sauce? salads, hot meals?

A basic french dressing is paleo, or balsamic dressing?

Personally I use a variation of french dressing:-

    Olive oil
Vinegar of your choice - I use white wine or cider
    minced garlic
    salt
    pepper
    mustard
    (teaspoon of sugar) optional

Use about one part vinegar to two parts olive oil. Add all the other ingredients, leave out the sugar obviously for paleo. and check the mustard for non-compliant ingredients.

Bung it all in a jar together and shake. The ingredients will mix but the flavours will take a while to meld together, so it can taste a bit raw for the first 10 mins or so. Add more vinegar if you like it a bit more tart, or more olive oil if it is too sharp.

Wholegrain mustard is good - I like the little crunchy bits.

Sometimes I use balsamic vinegar which gives a different flavour.

Or you could make mayo - but that is a bit of a faf if you don't cook much.

I made a Fritatta last night for today's breakfast, and I like things with sauces so I poured some olive oil (maybe a couple of tablespoons) into a cup and added a minced garlic clove, which I poured over the fritatta while it was still hot.

It gave it a bit of a sauce and was dead easy.

However I wont be snogging anyone today.

Making sauerkraut today to get all those lovely bacteria. Has anyone else made it? any tips?

This is actually my second go - all the juice escaped the last time and i was left with very dry cabbage so I have started again. Looks lovely and clean, green and fresh at the moment!

Not a bad use of some leftover smoked ham.

Sauerkraut is DELISH! Seriously good. I have never liked the bought stuff much, but I am already planning all of this weeks meals around it!

    Hello primal/paleo peeps!

I'm contemplating making the move to this kinda lifestyle, but I'd like to ask a quick question for those who've already made the switch, if ye don't mind...

What, if anything, has been the hardest part of changing to primal/paleo for you personally?

I'm more primal than paleo, the first week or two I find is the hard part; after that it’s great but you do need to plan well and social occasions can be awkward.

Did you suffer from low carb flu (I think it's called?) initially? Yeah, I agree with you on the planning. I aim to plan meals at home 4-5 days in advance and cook in largish batches (slow cooker on the way :pac:).

Been trying to found out about ground black pepper. Anyone have any advice on it?

    seems ok on these sites:
    http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=foodspice&dbid=74
    http://www.whfoods.com/genpage.php?tname=george&dbid=62

but then... looking at this, seems to have small amounts of something dodgy:
    http://paleohacks.com/questions/139233/is-black-pepper-paleo#axzz2JOa4ILQJ

    wiki has pros and cons:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_pepper

    I'm confused.

Just took another jump and looked up that dodgy ingredient Safrole:
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Safrole
In that role, safrole, like many naturally occurring compounds, may have a small but measurable ability to induce cancer in rodents. Despite this, the effects in humans were estimated by the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory to be similar to risks posed by breathing indoor air or drinking municipally supplied water.[6]

    Doesn't seem so bad now

    Hi,

I have started a (semi) Paleo lifestyle this week so a total newbie.

I don't eat any meat whatsoever so will allow myself some quorn and tofu. Am also keeping my Greek yogurt !:D

So that leave me fish, veggies, all fruit, eggs, nuts and seeds:eek:

What I am struggling with at the moment is snacks. I eat between 5-7 snacks a day and they used to consist of - couple bars of chocolate, biccies, popcorn, yogurts, crackers and hot chocolates!!

Any ideas on what to replace these with!? lol I have tried (and loved) Bounce Balls, Kale crunchies and Nakd bars but don't want to have to rely on these all of the time...obviously...

So far all I can find that I like are - nuts/seeds, fruit and boiled eggs!!

    HELP...

That seems a lot of snacking, if you eat 3 proper meals a day you shouldn't really need them, maybe pre&post workout ones if you are training hard. And keep to real food options :)

This shopping list from W9 should be helpful
    http://whole9life.com/book/ISWF-Vegetarian-Shopping-List.pdf
and check out the Resources on this page

I used to be vegan (now pescetarian). I posted a thread on this website looking for advice on how to make my vegan diet more paleo and got some very good replies: http://paleohacks.com/questions/148205/vegan-paleo-evaluate-my-diet-please#axzz2KO8IN1Yf You might find it useful.

Can I make a paleo or paleo friendly hummus dip from whole chickpeas?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,934 ✭✭✭Dotcomdolly

No, chickpeas are legumes and not paleo at all.

I have made this before & it's very good - use the vac packed cooked beetroots

Dcd sorry to hijack thread but I noticed on another thread you went less paleo for a while. Were results good / bad / non-existent?

Like on holidays? over Xmas? I have indulged with non-paleo foods at these times but day to day I would say I eat primal-paleo. When not doing a whole30 I would have 85% dark chocolate, wine at the weekends and white potatoes maybe once a week...

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,824 ✭✭✭vitani

Going to give this a shot. I love the idea of primal/paleo but a straightforward change would be too much to take on at once.

No no no, I read all your paleo threads because i have been cleaning my diet and am pretty much nearly there now too and you seem really well-informed on it all.

I thought (could be wrong) that on the 'boards better body challenge' your PT advised a different diet and you were trying that.

Sorry if im confusing you with someone else.

pancakes for breakfast? oh yes, of course!

    pancakes-2_zps9cba6f0a.jpg

    2 ripe bananas
    3 eggs
    2 tblsp of coconut flour
    1 tbsp of almond flour
small half of teaspoon of baking soda, vanilla extract to taste and pinch of salt.

mash the bananas, add the rest of the ingredients, beat everything into a smooth batter, grease yorkshire pudding tray with coconut oil, divide the batter into the cups on the tray, bake for 10mins or until golden. serve sprinkled with cinnamon and some frozen berries (thawed of course).

for those calorie conscious the totals are: 750kcal, protein 33g, carbs 90g, fat 32g. makes 6 pancakes, serves 2.
this is a high carb breakfast and I only allow it to myself couple times a week.

    Looks delicious.

Where would I get coconut flour? Have tried local HF shop, (usually very good) and she doesn't have it.
If anyone could give name of supplier/brand on packet, I may be able to get it ordered for me.
    Thanks.

Try Amazon Aimee - I got a 1kg of almond flour for there for a lot cheaper than the HF shop. The almond butter is a lot cheaper on there as well and delivery free if you go for super saver delivery when ordering over £25 worth of stuff
