Apparently there was a LoJack transceiver in the Mercedes car they hi-jacked last night... which is how the police followed them to the location of the shootout in Watertown.

Using the 20/20 vision of hindsight... it may have been wiser to hang back, let them run and confront them somewhere other than a densely populated suburb.
