Right time to put some legs on this idea.

Twin Galaxies is back up and running and there are 11 Boulder Dash records there that i know i can beat.

Im thinking of doing them all in one evening in a public location and trying to raise a few quid for charity in the process.

I will need a bit of help with this with recording and the use of a few computers that i dont have in my collection so if anyone can help that would be great.

Im hoping to get this going for the End of August so any ideas or offers would be appreciated.

Let me know what ya need, would love to watch that!

Just beat Chris's chapter of Resi 6. It's equal parts absolute gash and some genuinely great moments. I liked the section with the snake, however my favourite section was with the really creepy enemies in the aircraft carrier, they are genuinely some of the creepiest enemies the series has ever come up. The final boss was alright as well. Still the start was absolutely horrendous when you were scavenging for ammo. As not got a clue what the hell the story is all about. I know what happened, I'm just not sure why. I hope it gets an awful lot better.

I liked Leon's the best, it felt the most "Resi" of them, Chris's could have been any generic 3rd person war shooter thingy these days. Some good setpieces though.

    Your joking, right?
Ah I see maybe you are, as you should have said spelt wrong.

That's a really good Simpsons episode by the way, not as good as the Cape Fear parody or the fat Homer episode but still very good.
Seasons 11-17 get mauled as having low standards but in my opinion there was a definite slide of quality, as in the poor episode where now unwatchable, whereas, before these dips still managed to raise a few chuckles. Despite that, there are still some excellent episodes: Weekends at Burnsie's,The Heartbroke Kid, Simple Simpson and the tomacco episode being just a few.

Now the 'classic' Simpsons ended for me when Lisa Kudrow's character pulled out a mobile phone and used it.

I haven't watched a full new episode since the movie came out, I was flicking around the other night and there was one where they were in Israel for some reason? woeful stuff.

the classic episodes though, seasons 3 (when it really hit its stride) until midway through 9 are still fantastic. Once stuff like the Sherry Bobbins, fake principle Skinner and Max Power episodes started rolling around it was the beginning of the end. Its not the same show any more, for me favourite episodes are:

Home stops going to church and nearly burns down the house
    Cape Feare
    the Duff Gardens episode
    Itchy & Scratchy Land
    Hank Scorpio
    The Monorail
    Mr Burns opens the casino
Sideshow Bob at the air show

Found the skill that increases the item drop rate a godsend, but still ran out of ammo at certain points. The thing is though, a lot of the fights in Resi 6 could actually be avoided if ya run, there are some monster closets or points where you need to get a key item off a corpse but overall the enemies are there to hinder you, not as the sole reason for being in an area. Doesnt help in boss fights though, but found a lot had either enemies drop down to help replenish your stocks or just bodies/things fall and leaving ammo behind.

Plotwise....its a Resident Evil game, what were you expecting? It does make a kind of sense near the end, more so after playing Adas campaign as it gives a glimpse behind the curtain at what was going on. Though the way I played, I did all the Chapter 3's for the three main campaigns and then the 4's, so was a bit easier to follow the narrative threads when you see them closer together.

And doing a running slide through a row of thre crates never gets old :D

The whole game of RE6 is an allegory for the 4 gospels of the New Testament.

Yeah I knew they could be avoided. Didn't make the game any more fun. As for the boss fights respawning enemies are always lazy and terrible game design.

Some actual plot structure would have been nice. No matter how awful the scripts for the older games were I knew why I was where I was. From starting with Chris's campaign I'm in china, there's zombies there. Why am I in china and why/how did the zombies get there? A wizard did it for all I know because I still don't have the foggiest.

I mean even Resident Evil 5 handled it better. There's a possible BoW outbreak in Africa so that's why I'm there. Resi 6 I'm a drunk in a bar and then 5 seconds later I'm in China, no explanation given.

Maybe the series needs to get smaller and tighter rather than attempting to be blockbuster in scale, more like Cabin in the Woods, less like, well, a Resident Evil movie!

I enjoyed the 3DS game, although the story was drivel and the reuse of enemy assets annoying, but there was plenty of threat, nice changes of scene and at least one twist that didn't suck.

Oh definitely not....I noticed the HDMI out though, has that been on the other versions?

As far as I know the Retron systems don't use off the shelf consoles on a chip, they are pretty good over all, and at least this console, like it's progenitors, allow the use of original controllers.
They ain't cheap AFAIK, and is say that'll be this machines undoing, you could buy the original machines for the cost of the Retron 5, one of the same problems the Neo Geo X had, aside from being sh1te.

They most definitely are based on famiclone chips and are just as shoddy as all the other famiclones based on the same mass produced chip.

A Chinese manufacturer isn't going to go out and buy all the little chips that make up the original hardware from their original manufacturer especially since a lot are out of print. They're going to use the same mass produced POS as everyone else because it's cheap.

Anyone playing Luigi's Mansion 2 yet? It's absolutely brilliant. I can't get over how nice the environments and animation looks.

Have to get that, might be coming into the house as my son wants it and She Who Must Be Obeyed has said we might....
In the meantime I'm going to bring down the GC so he can get some time with the original.

Oddly, the second series of the Retron 3 has, reportedly, far better NES emulation, with the likes of Castlevania 3 working properly on it.
This and the promises on the device page suggest more effort than console-OAC efforts here.

It just means the latest NES on a chip clone it uses is compatible with the weirder NES mapper chips, doesn't mean the emulation is any better.

Well, I suppose this will be a matter of waiting and seeing what it's like.
I have high hopes that it, at least, won't suck.
It seems like a more honest effort than the likes of the Game gadget handheld thing.
No replacement for the real thing but just might be an interesting prospect tucked away, plugged into the main tv.
I'd like to imagine the company are honest in their blurb and the machine does a good job emulating the consoles contained within.
Again, the price could render that moot, but if it is a sub €100 purchase, I might just get one, plug flash carts into every available slot, some sort of gaming perv!

Stone Age gamer made no mention of the emulation being better just that it was the latest version of the clone chip everyone uses.

Seriously man, with a choice of AV out or HDMI...coupled with it being a mishmash of soac setups, means no thanks in my books.

If for some reason all of our consoles suddenly stopped working and there was no available repair, I could see a point.

But because the above wont be happening for quite some time then it seems pointless - like all the others!

    Plus it has no RGB!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 53,321 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

Who needs RGB when you can play it in HDMI on a 42" plasma the way it was meant to be played in 16:9

I'd say you'd very nearly replace the consoles for the same money as this thing will cost though. And where would the fun be in playing these games on big tv's over HDMI...they'd look absolutely awful, particularly the low res GB/GBA stuff. When I do the Famicom AV mods I get to see first hand what they look like on a big tv, & the difference when I switch to the smaller crt is vast. I'll never buy into the notion of using retro consoles on modern tv's, because the experience is ruined by how bad they look.

Plus no matter what they say, this is still just emulation. Its not using original hardware, so why bother buying this as opposed to just using your pc to emulate?
