I constantly hear this line being trotted out in the media, usually along with some borderline sob story.
It is not simply not true.
There are 792,096 private residential mortgage accounts for principal dwellings in the country of which ~15% are in arrears.
There are plenty of homes that are mortgage free and approximately 475,000 households rent.

So shut up about everyone having a mortgage and start talking about bailouts for the poor renters.

Renters have bailouts, social welfare rent allowance, tax credits, affordable housing schemes, council housing.

Maybe you can educate yourself on the options?

I don't know what a tracker mortgage is.

Not everyone has a mortgage. I certainly don't. Ah, the freedom to move with a month's notice, no bridging loans, no buying the entire contents of a house, no paying a rake of chancers just to get the keys...

And to think that I've been paying my rent the last 8 years like a complete sucker.

I rent and get no help at all. And I wasn't entitled to social housing because demand is so high in my area that a homeless single mother with 2 kids is still short of the points needed!
And before someone says its cheaper than a mortgage, its £20 per month dearer and at the end of the deal someone else owns the house!

    I have a mortgage.
Me too, and I can only fit 4 cars in my driveway... I demand a bailout for my inadequate property!

You're only eligible if you don't have decking and a hot tub.

Renters are not entitled to social welfare if they work fulltime.

Tax credits of a couple of hundred quid per year while paying a grand a month in rent, yes its a huge bailout?

    affordable housing schemes - abolished

council housing - you need a low income and be on a waiting list for many years to avail of council housing.

I got rid of my hot tub for a walk in shower. Can I have money now?

Tax credits for renters are gone gone gone.

if you're employed you get €1000 rent relief off your tax bill.
if you are unemployed there's rent allowance.

i believe rent allowance is at least €500 a month depending on county?

It depends, if it's large enough to accommodate at least 2 people with gold-plated accessories and marble tiling, then yes.

Need bailouts for non-renters and mortgage-free property owners.:(

You can nearly double that figure as its usually two people to a mortgage, not always but usually.

You'd want to get a foot on the property ladder. The only way prices will go is up. Renting is dead money.

Have a look at how much you've paid off the capital compared to how much you've actually paid in repayments and then still tell me it's subsidised.

I believe that was abolished? Also even for somebody in Dublin rent allowance is max 300ish,and you don't get the full amount

I've no mortgage. Just saying like. I bought it old-fashioned style. With money. There were some odd looks. Apparently it's not the done thing.
