How do you hear bicycles? It's much more important to see dangers.

Top tier professional road racers would have you believe that earphones are actually essential for rider safety. They get very upset at the potential dangers of riding without earphones :p

I don't use earphones on the bike. But if there's any wind (or you going fast) its can be quite hard to hear things behind you. You might hear a car or another bike (usually a gear change) but only when its right behind you. For general situational awareness, its overstated in this thread.

Cycling with earphones on doesn't seem to affect traffic cutting out on you from side roads.

My peepers usually reveal their presence. Even in the dark. Don't need to hear them as well.

Ive been driving machinery and riding bikes since I was 9 and lately ive realised how unrelaxed and terrified most people are on bikes. When im on a bike im very relaxed but ive discovered its because of past expierience with large machinery. I look at a bike as one of the safer ways to travel once you have a brain!

I ALWAYS cycle with earphones at almost full blast and never once thought about the traffic because i always seem to know when traffic come behind, its also a sense thing and not just hearing. i cycle mostly country roads and always found that the cyclist has control as long as you are also forgiving, pulling in at smooth areas letting off trafic and directing them ahead at blind bends.
Buy if i enter heavy traffic i use the button on my headphones to pause the tunes for minute because im always weary of horns blowing.
