I was just going over my online banking when I spotted a £41.00 charge in a certain drinking establishment. This didn't ring a bell as all I remember getting was two glasses of wine.

So I look in my wallet and I happen to still have both the itemised receipt and the debit reciept. Right enough the debit reciept says £41.00... as does the itemised reciept, which reads as follows:
    1 GL FARN PINOT £5.25
    1 GL RIOJA £5.75

    TOTAL £11.00

    Settled by:

    VISA £41.00
    TIP £30.00

the reciept says "you have been served by: ROSSA"

There is no way in hell I tipped them 30 bucks! the dirty fecker plugged in his own tip before I punched in my pin code! I only copped it now a week later!

Am I right to march in there and demand my money back?

Did you not check the amount before entering your PIN?

    Yes.

If you did not tip by £30, he essentially stole from you. Break his face.

(also the name rossa immediately reminded me of this :L http://2.gvt0.com/vi/8RSz52ravlI/default.jpg )

No I mustn't have. I wasn't even drinking yet at that stage so it's not even down to me being drunk. My gf had just arrived so I was a bit distracted

May have been a genuine mistake on their side too. I would rock back in and speak to the manager, I wouldn't be getting cross over it though.

Why thank you.. your sarcasm is endearing!

I simply mean it's one of those things I always do when using chip-and-pin for this exact reason.

As to the OP's problem in hand - you've every right to back in and inform the manager.

    Name and shame OP.

I'd ring them and arrange a time to speak with the manager, saves you going in and getting the brush off that the manager is on their break, off sick, on holidays etc.

And absolutely I'd be demanding a refund.

Start a Facebook campaign that blows things wildly out of proportion.

I would contact the manager/owner of the premises. Bring the receipt and also a photocopy of the receipt (they might ask for the receipt but only give them the copy). If this was an error they should be quick to refund. If this was a scam the I would expect it happened to a few people and the manager would have had other complaints and will refund you.

Pin number doesn't even have a 4 or a 1 in there so it wasn't a typo on my part.

maybe the bar tender hit 41 instead of 11 by accident?... possible... ?

I'll hold on to this until I see how easy they are about reimbursing me. ;)

AFAIK, usually the tip is entered separately on these, especially if it gets printed on the receipt.
If it's hand written on the receipt then the whole amount is usually entered at once.

It seems unlikely that somebody would do this deliberately and then hand you evidence of their theft.

Could be an honest mistake, not sure how it would happen though! Let us know how you get on!

What is the correct tip in these post Tiger days? Maybe OP briefly thought he was back in the boom times? ;)

This happened to me before in the Wright Venue.
(hate the place personally, was there for a birthday party)

Luckily I noticed the debit amount on the card machine before I typed my pin and said it to the barman.
He acted all apologetic and gave me the cash back, even though I hadn't asked for cash back.... Poxy chancer!

If the drinks were 11e and you were charged 41 it's entirely plausible that you got 30 cash back and he put it as a tip accidentally on the machine. His till would still balance at the end of the night. It's your own fault really for entering your pin code when he presented the machine to you with 41e
