In other words, the usual :D

Dunno if its workable but an idea for the vanilla server: to make things a little more interesting around spawn and reduce the great exodus away from there 24hrs after the server goes live, maybe use the Bukkit signs or something and give each player one free (or very very cheap) pair of private TP signs linking their residence at spawn to their Big Thing And/Or Strip Mine Miles Away From Everything and back. That way people are just a signpost away from their private mines and/or big projects and don't feel the need to abandon spawn never to return once the spawn mine is depleted :) Which in turn might make more people think of the spawn town as something more than a disposable shack to start in and never see again after the first day of the server going up :p

    We could use towny?;)

Regarding vanilla: Who/what broke the dynmap? Its been down a while now, but server is fine.

Regarding FTB: What will we be doing with GregTech recipes? Some of them are just plain silly, given that they force you to use T2.5/T3 recipes and materials to make by-then-worthless T1/1.5 machines. In particular its not like Water Mills/Wind Turbines/Solar Panels were given a x10 buff to output to match their altered requirements. I don't see how 0.025/0-5/1 (with only 50-60% uptime) EU/t respectively is in any way game-breaking compared to the 10EU/t you get off a bog-standard Generator you lobbed some Charcoal in, nor how their new recipes - all of which now require at least a centrifuge and electrolyzer (T2.5 machines) and which in the case of two of them also requires a friggin' IBF (extremely expensive to build and EU-hungry T3-T3.5 machine) can ever be repaid by their tiny EU output. And yes, you can upgrade the solars to T2 for a whopping 8EU/t but its the same deal with T3 Solars, the changes to Iridium in GregTech makes it a T4 (i.e. "loopy-la-la-land") material and makes it virtually impossible for non-"pros" to craft anything with the stuff, including the T3 solar panel. So even 64EU/t (again with only 50-60% uptime...) is far beyond the reach of the common man. I'm sorry, but simply spamming bog-standard or the GregTech fuel generators and lobbing stacks of charcoal or Coal Coke in them is not a solution; its a cheap, nasty lazy workaround that just proves the nerf should never have happened in the first place.

A few other recipes are silly as hell: I don't mind paying a little more for my Macerator, but making it cost 3 diamonds plus other extra bits in a modpack that's insanely Diamond-hungry is just silly. And that's NOTHING compared to the obscenity Greg replaced the Rotary mace with... an obscenely expensive T3.5 machine simply to mace my ore a little faster? Also, I don't mind having to use Steel to make drills and rock cutters and the like, but now they've been nerfed AGAIN and now require Titanium. So again, they now need an IBF, thus they're now T3 items and the payoff for making them is now no longer worth their cost as you won't get them till near endgame anyway

Its not that GregTech is without its charms, its just an illogical, contradictory mess that often nerfs the wrong things for the wrong reasons. If we could change some of those recipes back to normal or in a few cases back to what Greg originally wanted (the second drill/tool nerf is just taking the mic) then the mod would be a little more balanced, but as things stand right now its really killing Mindcrack for an awful lot of people and forcing mass defections to Direwolf servers every time another update brings in another difficulty increase.

    1.4.7 update AFAIK.

I've been playing a single player world with ultimate, and its actually fine. All you have to do is consider IC2/Gregtech stuff to be T2+ and its fine. Just focus more on AE/TE/Forestry/Bees in the early game and move on to IC2 and gregtech stuff once you have a decent foothold established. There's nothing in IC2 that you need early on, the jetpack, drill etc. are all just higher tier objectives rather than something you can get in the first 20min.

First dev build for bukkit is out, shouldn't be too long more now :)

It just makes things incredibly annoying; you're basically reduced to being a walking coal hopper ._. I just fail to see the point in effectively removing all non-automated power sources from the game, nor making so many tools so expensive that by the time you could make them, they're no longer wroth the hassle. It basically just removes 99% of IC2 from the game, pretty much leaving only the MFSU you'll use to get power from annoying GregTech generators to idiosyncratic GregTech machines.

TL:DR GregTech isn't a content addon or even a difficulty mod. Its just a full-on content remover.

That goes against the grain for me in a big way, especially with every other gaming franchise I know desperately trying to appeal to the lowest common denominator by removing as much content as possible until there's only half a game left *cough*FF*cough*WoW*cough*TES*cough*

Yeah... around T2.5-T3, at which point they're about as useful as a chocolate teapot :/

That said it does expedite the process of upgrading them to T2 panels and making them 8 times better, but still, at that point their usefulness ends as they hit Greg's patented Iridium Brick Wall making an upgrade to T3 nigh-on impossible. The only reason you'll upgrade a panel past T2 is to make a T4 panel for the ultimate solar helm, and making one would require a colossal T4.5 industrial setup with multiple fusion reactors to produce and process enough iridium for it. And the funny thing is, I play this game to, y'know, build stuff. Not to spend several months building endless soulless industrial estates to get the nicest helm :p

hmm chocolate tea .. pot but I digress. I guess the only way is to team up and if you can master bee's as prisoner42 did their very useful when you get to the uranium and platinum bee's,also multiple quarry's and using a combo of G-troll tech is prob the fastest way to get that shiny quantum suit of armor you didn't really want and then the game is over ,you have more uu matter and energy than you know what to do with but im sure some one could come up with some cool creative thing to build .Thats if theirs still anyone on the sever by the time that happens. Still nice to see more automation and more options than vanilla : )

Will anything like this be put onto the normal server whenever it is updated to 1.5?

This is one of the ideas I was playing around with in my head, but I don't know how it would actually go down.

Basically the idea would be to have diamonds not spawn naturally at all. The only way to get them would be in dungeon/mineshaft/village chests, or as prizes during events. This would hopefully have a few effects:

-Stop the pros strip mining everything at the start.
-Encourage people to participate in events.
-Make PvP a lot more balanced. Enchanting tables, full sets of diamond armour, etc. would be almost impossible to come by. Everyone would be decked out in iron gear, with some having one piece of enchanted or diamond stuff.

One problem: how would anyone build Nether Portals?

Also, the "pros" are always the first out of the gate raiding settlements anyway. An hour into the server's life and all the usual suspects would be fully decked out in diamond armor they made after pilfering 243536556 village chests and us regular players wouldn't even be able to mine diamonds to catch up with them

Strip-mine all you want, the bigger problem is usually the zerg rush on villages/temples/surface dungeons anyway :p My idea of everyone having their gaff in town and far-away-hidey-hole linked with warp signs would allow everyone to mine what they wanted where they wanted without having to run 4km away at server start and never see another player for the rest of the duration of the map.

When will the survival server be updated to 1.5?

As soon as there's a bukkit beta build. Might even try if there's a relatively stable dev build.

Seeing as I have been ignored I shall ask again :p Is the FTB server meant to be dead or has it expired due to illness? :o Its been down for days now :(

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 894 ✭✭✭Dale Parish

You could just restart the server now and apply bukkit later :pac:
No point in it being empty!

I'm a complete noob on the MP servers. Had a look through the thread but I'm not sure what plugins / mods I need because I normally play on vanilla. Sorry if its a very basic question!

For the survival server you don't need anything, just put in the server IP and connect.

For the Feed The Beast server you'll need to download their launcher from http://feed-the-beast.com/
