Garda convicted of assaulting prisoner - 4 other Garda in same room "saw nothing"

Disgraceful, all involved should be sacked, you'd wonder how often the likes of this goes on with officers covering up for one another - with the revelations about the penalty points being wiped as well as the vindictive arrest of Clare Daly(and the leak of it immediately to the media by a Garda) its obvious that there is a problem in the police force which is tarnishing its reputation and the reputation of the vast majority of decent people in it
In convicting Gda Morgan, Judge Mitchell said he found the evidence "disturbing to say the least" where gardai had "looked away at that moment and were not seeing or hearing".

He added: "It brings to mind 'see, speak and hear no evil'."

Shocking case, and hopefully the Appeal Court will uphold the sentence imposed. Very reminicent of the case in Wexford last year.
Odds are no one will be sacked.
It is a pity because most Gardai are decent people doing a difficult job and pubicity like this just makes the public trust them less and makes their job harder.

Aw man, I love that movie!

Dave: Who are you talking to?
Wally: I'm talking to you, you prick.
Dave: Why don't you look me in the eye and say that?
    Wally: I would if I could but I can't, I'm blind.
    Dave: You're blind?
Wally: Yes I'm blind, what are you ****ing deaf?
    Dave: Yes, I'm ****ing deaf!
    Wally: You're really deaf?
    Dave: I'm really deaf.
Wally: Then how do you know what I'm saying?
Dave: Because I'm reading your lips now you want the job or not?

Sure the cops are always kicking the sh*t out of people to be fair. I can't understand how things like this become big news because it's a weekly occurrence.

I thought An Garda Síochána discriminated against blind persons being recruited

Big news because its very rare it gets to court, never mind a conviction

True, and even when it does get to prominence you have eejits saying how it's great altogether when the Guards beat people up. Ironically it's usually the so called law and order brigade who condone the cops assaulting people in the barracks.

Any guard convicted of an offence should get double the normal sentence. Job obviously attracts a certain type of person who likes having the power that goes with it, if they abuse it they should face more severe consequences...although getting them to face any consequences would be a start.

Disgraceful behaviour from all involved, AGS can do without gardai who cannot treat people with a little respect, that garda deserves to be sacked imo, not sure about the others, reprimanded for sure.

These garda's in this story are not much better than the criminals they go after.

They want to impose law and order... except if its someone they know. Just like when a yob says he "won't grass on his mate"....

Pity the cops are not so tough when it comes down to taking on the real crime gangs up and down the country.

Gards are supposed to set an example. Letting his emotions get the better of him and acting out like this against a suspect does not reflect on them well one bit.

    Meh,

Scumbags have no respect for authority over here anyway. Wouldnt get away with half the crap they give the guards in the US. Those lads would turn you upside down on your head quick fast.

I'm sure you mean letting his temper get the better of him.

Yes, thats what I meant. I should have made that more clear in my post

If he can't control his temper to the point of assaulting someone who can't defend himself then he shouldn't be a cop.

The were probably watching Steve Wilkos on their Sky TV in the station, that's why they didn't see a thing

So what happens to that convicted guard now is he still working or on suspension? will he get the sack if he loses the appeal because it does not mention if hes suspended now ? hes a big hard man throwing a sly shot to someone unable to defend himself. wonder how hard he will be in prison;)

And the ones with vision and hearing impairment?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭JustRoss23

Garda Morgan denied claims that he had 'shoved Hodgins around'

Seems this is not the first time the guard has lost the cool.

They'll have to go, they wouldn't pass the medical

Any of the following examples of medical conditions may be a bar to passing the medical exam:
Defective Vision: the vision standard required of a Garda trainee is not less than 6/18, 6/18 (correctable to 6/9, 6/12) unaided by glasses or contact lenses, with normal colour vision.
    ..................................
    Defective Hearing
    ............

    :D

Also just to note, being overweight is also on that list, if the minister's looking to cut numbers it might be a good place to start :pac:

Surely if you could assault at leisure, you'd choose something more vexing than this. None of what this guy would even mildly irritate. If you regularly assaulted on such grounds, work would be a terrible chore, having to punch, throw and rip all around you.
