Garda convicted of assaulting prisoner - 4 other Garda in same room "saw nothing"

Disgraceful, all involved should be sacked, you'd wonder how often the likes of this goes on with officers covering up for one another - with the revelations about the penalty points being wiped as well as the vindictive arrest of Clare Daly(and the leak of it immediately to the media by a Garda) its obvious that there is a problem in the police force which is tarnishing its reputation and the reputation of the vast majority of decent people in it
In convicting Gda Morgan, Judge Mitchell said he found the evidence "disturbing to say the least" where gardai had "looked away at that moment and were not seeing or hearing".

He added: "It brings to mind 'see, speak and hear no evil'."

Shocking case, and hopefully the Appeal Court will uphold the sentence imposed. Very reminicent of the case in Wexford last year.
Odds are no one will be sacked.
It is a pity because most Gardai are decent people doing a difficult job and pubicity like this just makes the public trust them less and makes their job harder.

"It brings to mind 'see, speak and hear no evil'."

Aw man, I love that movie!

Dave: Who are you talking to?
Wally: I'm talking to you, you prick.
Dave: Why don't you look me in the eye and say that?
    Wally: I would if I could but I can't, I'm blind.
    Dave: You're blind?
Wally: Yes I'm blind, what are you ****ing deaf?
    Dave: Yes, I'm ****ing deaf!
    Wally: You're really deaf?
    Dave: I'm really deaf.
Wally: Then how do you know what I'm saying?
Dave: Because I'm reading your lips now you want the job or not?

Sure the cops are always kicking the sh*t out of people to be fair. I can't understand how things like this become big news because it's a weekly occurrence.

I thought An Garda Síochána discriminated against blind persons being recruited

Big news because its very rare it gets to court, never mind a conviction

True, and even when it does get to prominence you have eejits saying how it's great altogether when the Guards beat people up. Ironically it's usually the so called law and order brigade who condone the cops assaulting people in the barracks.

Any guard convicted of an offence should get double the normal sentence. Job obviously attracts a certain type of person who likes having the power that goes with it, if they abuse it they should face more severe consequences...although getting them to face any consequences would be a start.

Disgraceful behaviour from all involved, AGS can do without gardai who cannot treat people with a little respect, that garda deserves to be sacked imo, not sure about the others, reprimanded for sure.

"Pity the guards didnt catch him and give him a hiding!"

Guards give man caught drink driving a hiding.

    "Outrageous! sack them all!"

These garda's in this story are not much better than the criminals they go after.

They want to impose law and order... except if its someone they know. Just like when a yob says he "won't grass on his mate"....

Drunk driver bangs arm off radiator.

Woop Dee Dooo.... Id expect this sort of thing to happen to me if i was driving at speed drunk and called every Guard in the room a f'n this and an f'n that.

Good enough for him, OR me if i was as pure stupid.

Gards are supposed to set an example. Letting his emotions get the better of him and acting out like this against a suspect does not reflect on them well one bit.

    Meh,

Scumbags have no respect for authority over here anyway. Wouldnt get away with half the crap they give the guards in the US. Those lads would turn you upside down on your head quick fast.

Yes, thats what I meant. I should have made that more clear in my post

If he can't control his temper to the point of assaulting someone who can't defend himself then he shouldn't be a cop.

So what happens to that convicted guard now is he still working or on suspension? will he get the sack if he loses the appeal because it does not mention if hes suspended now ? hes a big hard man throwing a sly shot to someone unable to defend himself. wonder how hard he will be in prison;)

And the ones with vision and hearing impairment?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭JustRoss23

Garda Morgan denied claims that he had 'shoved Hodgins around'

Seems this is not the first time the guard has lost the cool.

    RustyNut wrote: »

They'll have to go, they wouldn't pass the medical

Any of the following examples of medical conditions may be a bar to passing the medical exam:
Defective Vision: the vision standard required of a Garda trainee is not less than 6/18, 6/18 (correctable to 6/9, 6/12) unaided by glasses or contact lenses, with normal colour vision.
    ..................................
    Defective Hearing
    ............

    :D

Also just to note, being overweight is also on that list, if the minister's looking to cut numbers it might be a good place to start :pac:

Surely if you could assault at leisure, you'd choose something more vexing than this. None of what this guy would even mildly irritate. If you regularly assaulted on such grounds, work would be a terrible chore, having to punch, throw and rip all around you.

What assault. A bang off a radiator! He probably just brushed off it. No one knows the whole story or how credible the witness is. I bet he didn't get a day for his first six assaults.
He was a scumbag driving a car AT SPEED WHILST DRUNK. Yet he is the victim. $$$ him.

If only there were 4 other witness to the assault/or not, pity they were all momentarily looking away :(

The judge probably has a reasonable idea, better than most posters in AH to be fair.

Maybe the Guard in question does more vexing than this and assault at leisure,he wouldn't be the first. But its this one where he was caught and found guity.

Whys that a pity? Fair play to them. I'd love to know how he was convicted in court with very little or no evidence except the word of a gouger.

Was he assaulted (allegedley) on overtime or during normal working hours?

And will Garda assaulting people who probably deserve it reduce in numbers with the work to rule?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,151 ✭✭✭kupus

Guy acts like a prick and gets treated like a prick, whats there to see here. I pity the guard losing his job, while a sitting judge with no connection to the real world outside his cocoon continues to pass out stupid sentences.

I blame Alan Shatter and the cuts:(

Even a "gouger" doesn't deserve to be assaulted for no legitimate reason. And what makes him a "gouger" btw?

The gardai siochana are beyond a joke at this stage. corruption is rift through out the force and they're a law upon themselves or a private security for international companies paid for by john Q taxpayer.

Courts are full of this Classic case of gards show up use pepper spray and batons then arrest the person and make something up in court backed by his/her buddies.

Its really no wonder people think gardai are scum.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,801 ✭✭✭Ruudi_Mentari

what this guard did was the equivelent of what I'd like to do, only in pulling him from his perceived safety zone they didn't absolutely pulverize him so what's the issue?!

I think these people need to learn a hard lesson before somebody else does, at the duress of their grille. People fear the book less and less, it seems so why not physically throw it at them

heartrending to hear he took it upon himself, some guards really do care.

    How was the garda convicted?
From what I can see in the article there was no evidence or witnesses other than a torn shirt and what the guy who was caught drink driving said.

    scumbag probably deserved a beating.

that said, gardai cant cry about it if they get caught. says a lot that the judge believed this guy over 5 police, they must have been totally devoid of credibility when cross examined in court

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,521 ✭✭✭JustRoss23

Well hopefully tough love will cost this dirty cop his job and 3 months of his life in jail:D

Amazing. A few lads in here beat the drum about IRA punishment beatings, when a Guard does it, it's "meh".

The scumbag should recieve a hefty sentence.
