    welcome to farming chit chat 2, hope ye all enjoy the thread as much as the last one

    Fair play whelan1, it couldn't be a nicer day to start the new thread on and thanks for all your advice on here so far, really appreciate your knowledge and ideas and I'd say I'm not the only one on here that thinks the same.

    GF was away and day was fine so after Mother's Day breakfast. I dosed the 5 yearling heifers i outwintered (bimectin Super injection - same active ingredients as ivomec super which ive not used in 2 years), clipped the big silly mops of hair on forehead/ears, loaded them up and threw them away to a bit of rough grazing that i only finished fencing Friday night, will still keep feeding them in it though.

    then set up fence of first paddock and let 2 first cows and calves off to grass... dry til wednesday night anyway, cleaned out water drinker in the dark and nearly lost feeling in my hands 3 degrees outside then and getting colder

    Picked the dog up from the vet this afternoon. besides a cut on her mouth you wouldnt know that she was under a car 24hours earlier.
    Very relived Bogman today!

    Two of my pups headed off for pastures new today. one going for hill work:cool: and the other to a guy with some quite animals so will have a handy life. hope they turn out good uns in their new homes.

    water troughs all froze up in sheds today, yard as dry as a bone, dust swirling about..bitter cold wind blowing from east, unusual to see them froze without ice around yard

    mechanic was here at half eight and replaced the relay that he should have replaced on friday, all going well so far

    Hard Labour?... Definitely, and dangerous too, 90% of all workplace deaths in Ireland happen on Farms

    Stress Free?    ... No more or less than any other job, I'd say if you weren't ready for being out doors in all weathers or if you haddn't an affinity with your chosen animals - it would be a constant nightmare.

    Repetitive?... Nature has a cycle and farming has to follow it, but its not as bad as some production lines I've seen..

    Whats the money like?.. I could be smart and say its very like the Euro :rolleyes:. truthfully farming as a whole is a high capital low return business, large sums of money tied up in assets and stock for medocare returns. We have off farm jobs and farm on a small scale, but hour for hour I'd make more money stacking shelves in Tesco.... But I wouldnt be happy!

    Now youve put a thought in my head.

    In a couple of hundred years and a few generatioins wont it be amazing for people to look back at this and see what their great grandparents day to day farming lives were like.

    here is one, i was at a shin dig saturday evening, was chatting a lady who told me her father farms 300 acres in wexford, she also has two brothers both of which have good high powerd jobs in dublin, none of which have any intrest in the farm

    her uncle (fathers brother) and his son (her 1st cousin) have always helped out on the farm and the father is seriously considering leaving the farm to the nephew as he knows it will be sold on if he leaves it to the sons and wants the land to stay in the family

    she says it is causing serious friction in the family

    Tough call lads and lassies what would you do in that situation

    Sit them all down and hopefully get proposal agreed to sell land to nephew at reduced rate so that at least his own three children will have an inheritance and land will stay in family... Everyone's a winner, nephew can't be expecting the place for free either if he has three children of his own

    cant see how everyone is a winner if say the farm is sold for €3k and acre and the nephew is left holding the baby for a million bucks. the nephew may have a serious interest but having an annual 60k interest bill might soon soften his cough
