Raging when I heard the news , always listened to the lads on the way to training or driving any going anywhere in the evenings, tune in to the podcast now and again. they had the show perfected imo. they will be hard replaced. whichever station gets them will be sorted.

5 guys leaving a radio show is worse than a death? really?

I suggest you and anyone else who thinks that needs to reevaluate their priorities.

Just a thought but I really don't think they are being serious....

Hyperbole (pron.: /haɪˈpɜrbəliː/ hy-pur-bə-lee;[1] Greek: ὑπερβολή hyperbolē, "exaggeration") is the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally

I'm sure Ken Early would have a philosophical debate about the nothingness of death and how a real loss as experienced by the living is clearly the worse event.

Talksport @ 3/1 looks like a cracking little bet to take

    TV3 show too at 6/1.

TV3 have pretty hopeless sports guys. They should be all over this....

Take it a little too far did you?

Realised your post was more than a bit embarrassing?

Grateful some other posters bailed you out?

Not to worry, the tears will dry up soon enough.

Imagine if they moved Vincent Browne forward a few hours and gave the lads VB's current slot...

Although I was under the impression TV3 was part of Dobbie's stranglehold of Irish independent mediaportfolio, so maybe this won't be possible either?

I would be a lot more embarrassed by this post, tbh, Profiler.

Yes, you got me. I really did think someone dying wasn't as bad as Ger Gilroy taking over off the ball

This is actually hard to believe, have spent years listening to this show (and I'm not actually even that interested in sport). It was just great, entertaining and informative radio. OTB taught me stuff!

    (To paraphrase Mario Rosenstock)

No doubt he would digress, diverge even. Once more crossing the Rubicon from banal sporting analysis into bold intellectual enlightened uberthought.

What year did McDevitt join?I can't remember when I first started to listen to the show, seemed to be always around.

2006. He had filled in quite a bit before that with Gilroy frequently moved to breakfast and lunchtime in others absences.

Grand so, when the lads finally find a home for their gimmick you can apply to be a joke writer for them.

Now, can you guess if I mean a joke of a writer or someone who writes jokes ;)

Not quite sure when he joined.

When I first listening Ger Gilroy was host and was very much the main man of the show, with Ken Earley his sidekick.

Generally I thought Ger Gilroy was good. When McDevitt took over I felt he was a bit lightweight version of Gilroy, but boy did he grow into the role.....he really did develop into a brilliant interviewer. What I like most about him is that he can talk about any sport, and sound convincing as an interviewer. It seems to me that he really does his research. With minority sports, you still felt that he was courteous enough to the sport to learn about it and ask the right questions, even if it was something he wouldnt normally have followed.

In contrast, Gilroy went to morning show where I thought he got very big-headed, always cutting across Claire Byrne.....he seems a bit lost in recent years.

My fairly strong view on this is as follows:

These guys had really built a fantastic show.

It took years to get it to where it is now, the contributors, the chemistry between them, the great atmosphere of the show.

I think they would be fools to walk away from that. If they take Off the Ball to RTE, and just copy and paste, then good.

But I think if they try to dream up a whole new and different show, then I think they will struggle.

Final point: maybe the writing was on the wall once the new RTE sports show started, my feeling was that a lot of the GAA guys, the likes of Johnny Giles and others would feel obliged to stick with RTE rather than Newstalk...so maybe this is part of their thinking.

Gilroy's really having to string this Pat Nevin interview out.

I'm with Tombo2001, first thought McDevitt wasn't as good as gilroy, but he got better and the show was better fun.

So out of the 5 that resigned only 2 will be offered positions?

That will test their loyalty to each other.

I don't think that would be the case. Most of their GAA contributors (Brady, Parkinson, Regan, Jayo) do not have any connections with RTE. And I doubt Giles would put up with being forced to leave Newstalk.
