Its bad for the show and possibly the station, but most likley only in the short term.

By that logic I should just accuse you of trolling because of your username!?!

Ignoring your childish name calling in your OP then so?

No, for the way you phrased it. Say Vince McMahon left WWE tomorrow, and someone went onto the PW forum, saying how everyone was an overreacting internet fanboy. What would you think?

I'm just surprised that cantankerous fool George Hook has a higher listenership than OTB. I'd like to see them on 2FM, seems like the only national station that would fit with the show.

I've never heard so few texts being read out over the course of an hour as there have been on otb tonight. On any newstalk show.

A lot more people naturally listen to the radio between 5-7 than 7-10. Hook's show is horrendous and I fail to see its appeal at all

I dunno. Thought Ger was fairly genuine at the start. seems like they had a backup plan if the timeslot was the major problem.

If Newstalk is ever to be taken seriously, it needs a robust drivetime current affairs show that runs in line with RTE1, TodayFM etc
Hook did a good job setting this up, but should have been turfed out about 4 yrs ago
Starting a sports show at 6pm would have been nonsensical on some many different levels - this can only be a convenient excuse issued by the Radio channel

    Because it's drivetime radio.

As I said in my last post, there's not too many radio shows that people go out of their way to listen to. I never would have imagined myself listening to talk about american football, baseball or basketball, but such was the banter you couldn't help to be absorbed.

just about to post this must be some amount of abuse for the station and support for the five lads.

no Shane Horgan tonight even though he is a monday regular, would point to something more considering his brother was the producer.

i really doubt it came down to the timeslot

    sour grapes maybe.

i wonder why the lads are being quiet. not a peep out of them on twitter. they offered to work the 8 weeks notice, but newstalk said no. did they pay them the 8 weeks so they'd say nothing?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,244 ✭✭✭baalthor

Maybe they'll revert back to the original format of an hour of "classic British comedy" between 9 and 10 ...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,877 ✭✭✭take everything

Always enjoyed listening to the lads.
Was a bit of a curiosity in Irish broadcasting the natural chemistry between them.
Always liked their refreshingly intelligent and skewed take on a lot of sports stories. Without taking things too seriously.

Also liked their scepticism of the Lance Armstrong stuff from early on.

gardening leave with perhaps a clause that they can't join a rival or make any comments on twitter etc

Employees continue to receive their normal pay during garden leave and must adhere to their conditions of employment, such as confidentiality, at least until their notice period expires.

Their silence probably comes down to wanting to get through the legal formalities before committing themselves.

He's on during drivetime when tons of people are listening to the radio on their way home from work.

Wow, you'd swear there had been a death or something.

I've been on this thread saying the show was nowhere near as good as some were making out to be.

Much as I'd like to see Hook's broadcast time significantly cutback (to nil if I had my way) there was no way Newstalk were going to reduce his airtime.

The lads may find it difficult to find a home for their shtick.

When I listened to the show it was for the guests, John Giles, Graham Hunter, Keith Wood, Brian Murphy (the US sports person) Don on Horse Racing, they made the show what it was. The poor attempts at comedy always seemed to get in the way for me, which is why I listened to it almost never these days.

Good luck to them, it can't be easy to find a job in this current economic environment, but I doubt I'll miss them.

It's worse than a death. Some people listened to the entire 3 hour show every night for years. Thats a big gap to be filled.

I'm aware of that. My point was that what's currently being reported is that newstalk wouldn't move OTB to six because Hook's listenership was higher, but if his listenership is simply down to the time he's on then surely moving OTB to 6 wouldn't be a problem as it would pick up extra listeners due to being on earlier?

Talksport @ 3/1 looks like a cracking little bet to take

5 guys leaving a radio show is worse than a death? really?

I suggest you and anyone else who thinks that needs to reevaluate their priorities.

    I don't mind Ger.

... however I draw the line at Dave McIntyre.
He's a deal breaker for me.

However 5-Live can be sometimes worse!
They have Robby Savage as their "pundit in chief" ffs
