And very dangerous , sony are in junk status might i add at the moment and they normally sell at a loss and hope to profit in the future.

If the system is as powerful as its rumoured to be then it needs to become a success instantly.

Yeah, particularly given Microsoft would probably be willing and able to cut to a similar price if they absolutely had to. They could absorb the loss, but could Sony? Might be bollocks, anyhow.

That figure is for its first week on sale, I'm pretty sure. Sony sold all 1/2 million PS2s they shipped in the US at launch on the first day; they couldn't keep up with demand...don't think we'll see any console enjoying a launch like the PS2 or Wii did again any time soon, if ever.

Rumour has it PS4 will launch for UK£300, which is very competitive.

i dought that ps4 would that price,

ps1 was £199.99 on launch day

ps2 was £349.99 on launch day

ps3 was about £500 on launch day

And the ps3 launch was a disaster. I'd imagine Sony have learned from that. Also the parts are supposedly cheaper this time. They'll still be taking a loss though

While that's reasonable logic, you're missing some very important factors (especially when considering the PS3):

    1. The PS3 was built around custom hardware (which drives the cost up dramatically), while the PS4 is gonna use mostly off the shelf components (or at most, tweaked variants).

    2. PS3 was also using a then-new optical drive as its defacto storage medium. I'd love to know how much of that initial €630 was the Bluray drive? I was working in retail around that time and had people buying PS3's at that price as they were the cheapest Bluray players they could find.

    3. Sony thought they were invincible coming off the back of the PS2's success and arrogance played a big factor in how badly they messed up the PS3's launch, cost included (no Ken Kutaragi, I don't think many people bothered to get a second job to buy one ). They appear to have eaten their fair share of humble pie in that regard and one would hope that the PS4 won't ask that crazy money.

    4. Every man and his dog knows there's a lot less disposable income to go around than there was in 2006 (and 2000, 1995), Sony included.

Hoopefully we'll know a bit more tomorrow after 23:00 :)

Edit - i think the sweet spot for the PS4 will be about the same cost as a Wii U Premium. If that happens then Nintendo is really going to need to roll out the heavy hitters as the Wii U's perceived value is going to drop, fancy streaming tech or not (and I'm convinced of a price drop, although footage of Super Mario Galaxy 3 would probably make my wallet spontaneously open!).

but sony sell ps4 for £300 they wont get a profit on it, actually they lose out on gaining any money

They always lose money on their consoles, at least initially. So do Microsoft. Even Nintendo are making a loss on the Wii U, albeit a small one that they recoup after selling 1 game.

The console is the route they use to your wallet though.

They don't turn a profit on the console, that's correct, but they will turn a profit on you as a customer during your time with the console through you buying games, peripherals, subscription services, DLC and crappy collector's editions. You in turn will hopefully tell your friends how great these things are and they will go out and buy one too.

They also need to price it in such a way that you will perceive it as being well price and are therefore more likely to drop extra money on those more profitable items.

No console under TV = no way to sell you those profitable extras, so yeah, they take the financial hit on it.

Wait until about a quarter way through the lifecycle; cheaper console, cheap first gen games, more interesting new releases and (hopefully) hardware issues will have become known and ironed out by then.

Much as I want a Wii U, I know the price will be cut (or perhaps hit upon a really good retailer bundle) by this time next year. And as much as I want a PS4 as soon as it's out, the same logic will apply.

Gaming is not a waste of time!!!!!!!!!!!:mad::mad:

It's a hobby, and is equally as valid as any other hobby. Why age should come into it I don't know. Are you going to stop watching TV as well? Going to the cinema? Why should gaming be different?

I find it hard to believe any real lover of games would have an opinion of wasting time on gaming.. I feel exactly same as you and gaming is my true passion and a great hobby I'm 30 and two kids and I will always have a console

Why you'd want to do that, I've no idea! I'm 33, and I know that I'll at least consider getting one of the other two consoles when they come out, and will get the next Nintendo console too. And it'll be played by myself and my lady!

Really? Strangely I find that hard to believe. Congrats!

Anyway, what you want to do is settle down and have some kids. Then you'll realise how important a games console is to the 30+ market - you need something that's entertaining, available at the drop of a hat, can be left at the drop (more usually - scream) of a hat, can be used at any hour of the day or night and doesn't require the ability to leave the house.

Consoles : Because friends, sex, booze, bowling or lingering out the back after you put the bins out are not an option!

(an unamplified solid body electric guitar is also an option, but running up and down scales at 3am while the bottle heats is really depressing and surprisingly difficult)

With another sprog on the way and money about to become really tight, I'm seriously considering a WiiU to get me through those long caffeine-hazed mornings.... how drop-friendly or crayon-resistant is the controller?

Edit : One thing worth noting is that at 36 my thumbs are not really up to playing hours of console play every night in conjunction with my desk job. So if there're any 40 year old gamers out there who can reassure me about therapies that might get me into my next decade of gaming, speaken-sie up!

All of a sudden I'm starting to feel really young at only 24. I think I'm going to go watch cartoons.

I'm 31 and there's nothing wrong with playing..... OH HOLY JAYSUS! I'm 31, how the bloody hell did that happen?

    I'm 38; will I do?

Right then, first off; congrats on the impending arrival of black-tar poo (only dads will get that one).

Secondly, beat a path down to a shop and get yerself a WiiU NOW!
You will never be able to justify the purchase after the next-gen arrives (and I'm not talking consoles here).

When you're waiting for the bottles to warm, you can check out the MiiVerse and suddenly realise why bookface is so shyte. It's like a crack addiction though so be warned....well, if all the crack addicts were really nice people that gave you loads of yeahs and posted nice things about everything.

Then when the screaming stops and you've no chance of getting back to sleep, boot up some Mass Effect 3, get your character into bed with a blue alien chick with a wierd Max-Headroom head and post insinuations of how good you were in bed on MiiVerse...

Trust me, it'll totally be worth it!

Erm, I'm 41, with a near 10 year old son and a long suffering wife of some 13 years and I have about 55 consoles and a cab in the house!
I picked up the WiiU before Christmas and will definitely be picking up the 360 successor around or at launch, depending on the games on offer. The PS4 will wait, unless The Last Guardian is there, then I'm all over it like cream on peaches.

If you reckon that gaming is a waste of your time you should possibly hand in your games forum membership here and now, get your coat and best of luck. Don't worry about the rest of your things, they'll be forwarded to the nearest skip! ;)

How do you mean?? Nintendo exclusives?? Or your just not buying any other consoles??

Can I ask did your wife and kids ask you not to buy any more consoles?? If she did that's controlling and bad form.. My wife hated my Xbox cos I had an addictive streak with it but she said she wanted it gone but encouraged me to get wii u cos its a great hobby and I don't be up til 3 playing it as I can play it a lot more with gamepad

See, personally, I'd make a distinction between passing time and wasting time. Wasting time is exactly what it says, a waste, i.e. doing something when you should have/ been better off doing something else. I don't classify games as this, I'd classify them as a good way to pass the time, like any good hobby. I don't let it interfere with other aspects of my life. I also go to the gym, compete at sport and stuff so I have other hobbies as well. Games are just something that I find enjoyable and a good way to wind down. I don't consider them a waste
