My husband's aunt lives in America. A few of his family including ourselves have married over the last few years. We have all sent wedding invitations to her even though she hasn't been home in over 10 years, but just to let her know she's been thought of. She hasn't got one of the three wedding invitations which have been sent from his family in the past 5 years. However, we received her wedding card with cash in it. We posted her back a thank you card but she never got it! Correct adress used. Funny, the two cards with nothing in them "lost", the one with cash actually delivered!

A crime was committed, so yes, a criminal investigation is what's warranted. That's the Gardai's job - to investigate crimes.

Why are you so affronted that the OP has reported this theft?

I always assumed there was an xray machine at some stage along the line and it's the guy in charge of that. Going through letters by hand to find the ones with money would be fairly time consuming.

It's no secret that there are thieves working for the post office. Nothing new about that. It also should be reported to the Gardai because it's never a one off. This won't be the first time that post office worker stole money from the post. That's why it's not a waste of police time.

Nearly everyone has a story of losing something in the post. So it is rife and probably a nice little earner for a certain group of post office employees. They need to be rooted out and frankly jailed. They are thieves.

It's his naivety I'm affronted by. On many levels. I could expand on that, but it would be a waste of time.

You know what I'm affronted by? The tolerance for petty crime in this country. Sure it was only a hundred dollars! What's the big deal? That seem to be the attitude of several people on this thread. It's also the attitude of far too many people in this country. We are far too tolerant of petty thieves, vandals and the rest. Not to mention that fact that we tolerate thieves to the point where we elect them to the Dail or parade on marchs to protest about them going to jail for their dishonesty and greed.

We all should be affronted by the fact that a child can lose out on a few dollars because some shameless low life took it out of his birthday card.

But we're not because most Irish people are as dishonest as the thief in the post office. Given the chance most of us would do the same.

We have no shame.

Sorry to hear about your loss in the post. As a former employee of An Post I would urge you to complete a complaints form MP58 which is available at your local Post Office. The only way this person can be caught is by people such as yourself report incidents which in time will form a pattern and will lead to the perpetrator being caught. The Post Office views such incidents very seriously and have their own dedicated Investigations Branch (IB) which go to extraordinary lengths to rid the Post Office of individuals who tamper with mail. Unfortunately you will not be compensated for your loss as it is not permitted to send cash through the post. Make sure to report this loss as it is the only way to weed out thieves from our postal service. Might I add that the vast majority of An Post employees are trustworthy and a very small proportion of the staff give all a bad name.

Just want to say, I think it's lousy what happened OP. There are bad people about, but not everybody who works for An Post is like that. Know some very nice and professional Postmen and wish there was more of them.

I know better then to send money by post but an Aunt sent me cash for our Wedding. Envelope arrived crudely taped together minus the money.

I think a previous poster was justified in saying it happens a lot!

It's not just money. I buy and sell things quite a bit. I've long since insisted on everything moving by courier firms. Far too many light fingers in An Post, and their idea of customer service or making amends is a collective shrug of the shoulders as if the fact that their staff are thieving is none of their concern. My advice to everyone - transfer cash electronically via your bank, and transfer everything else by anyone OTHER than An Post.

When Moved into my " new" house people were sending me congratulations cards. Lots didn't get through. 8 months later at my birthday one card arrived with the top slit open & rescaled. I rang my friend & asked her why she'd opened & te sealed the card - had she forgotten to write it! She said she hadnt - it had been posted " whole ". My " regular" card ( close family) hadn't arrived so I asked was I in the black books. Turns out they wre ticked off at me for not thanking them for their cash gift. Went down to thd sorting office, got the inspectors from both local sorting houses out - gave them the evidence as requested. They wanted to possibly do a set-up ; I agreed if that was what they wanted to. They left the house with the evidence - never returned calls or got in contact with me. My letters remained Unresponded to & depite a visit yo inquire at gheir office what the outcome was they were " out at meetings" & never got back to me.
Less than impressed.

Still have my banking at my parents address.

Had similar sending birthday cards to the US. Either the cards don't arrive or they arrive with no money inside. Now use WU when sending cash pressies.

I work for An Post. There's cameras everywhere in the Mail Centres and Post Offices. Only a small percentage of letters are handled manually. Its mostly sorted by machine. The machines run at a seriously high speed sorting about 20,000 letters an hour. They jam regularly and letters become ripped,may open along the line and its contents spill out.

You'd be surprised at how stupid some people are when it comes to mailing money. Last year I was clearing a jam in 1 of the machines and noticed some sterling beside a ripped envelope which was addressed to a bank in limerick. I managed to retrieve £500 and a small piece of paper with the senders name. No a/c number,just a name scribbled on a piece of paper. Gave the supervisor a shout and he handed it into the service desk so it could be taped back up and sent on.

Packages can be the same. Crappy wrapping on them and then you'll have people whinging about their stuff being damaged in transit.

My advice to you though is that there's numerous camera's in our centres. Follow it up ASAP... We're not all crooks in An Post!!!!

Registered post. Its the only way. Even the bad eggs know not to f*ck with it because it will be tracked and you will be caught. Sending money in the post is a bad idea anyway but if you are going to do it, register it.

Had a galaxy S3 delivered from dabs by an post through Kilrush po. Arrived with small rip on the outside of the packaging box. Phone and battery were lifted from the manufacturers box. Unfortunately parcel was signed for at this end. Complaint lodged with an post, no feedback. Dabs paid out after some pushing.

USB dongles stolen from envelope through Kilrush PO. Complaint. No feedback.

Wedding card received by family member through Westport PO rifled, cash gone. Complaint. No feedback.

Of course I'm not saying each PO is to blame here but still encourage all to report theft. An post first, then Gardaí. The issue is so widespread nationally and the root so traceable that it deserves proper investigation.
