No, Blockbusters sold Xtra Vision in 2009. Xtra Vision is fine for now.

Yeh I also reckon the closure of HMV can only mean xtra vision will get more business now in terms of games at least, blu rays they willhave to step up there game or at least stop selling ex rentals only.

Yeh its not to bad, but we all know that feeling were you go you know what I'd love to watch such and such a film today fcuk it ill pop down to HMV, from now on you have to go hmm I'd like to watch this film I'll order it it'll arrive next week then I will see when I have the time or am in the humour to watch it.

It ain't all that good either especially when you consider that if HMV was still open I'd have the film this coming Friday. All the stuff I preordered I had already on order in HMV and only one of the items off of amazon is cheaper than HMV. People say the pricing in HMV was ridiculous but overall I found them very competitive, especially when I was able to preorder the Looper and Skyfall Steel books for 18 euro a piece, considerably cheaper than off of amazon.

I'm down here in Wexford were we never had big stores in fact the main shop that sells films doesn't stock blu rays or even chart DVDs just budget range stuff and we have Xtra Vision with its ex rental stuff with Tesco with chart stuff but no real choice.

I used to travel up to HMV and other places once a month to Dublin many years ago to buy things especially box sets as I couldn't get them down here. I do belive there is market for many years to come for physical media but with high rents/rates it would be hard for any new business to arrive, Heck I doubt any new business will try and fill the gap that all these places have made.

why didn't/don't you buy them online?
if you don't have a cc then you could have got one of those pre pay cards or you can now use your debit card online

As soon as the 3V card happened I signed up with that the 02 and now my bank card. I mostly buy 3d blu rays now and if I'm lucky Xtra Vision might get one film in every few weeks so its online for me.

Quick Question - would people buy off an Irish site, that sold blu rays. And shipped next day?

Since HMV is now gone, the only place is Amazon etc.

And that can take up to 5 days etc. New releases would be received on release day too.

I am sad that HMV is now gone, and that all the staff were layed off

- but maybe this can be our answers to physical media.

I would, but only if the price was competitive with Amazon and the like.
Amazon are pretty decent IMO at delivery, never had to wait more than 4 working days for an order

I'd have bought at least 4 to 5 blu-rays a month. Must of that would have been impulse buys on older cheaper movies. I don't think I've ever actually bought a physical copy of a movie online. The property for HMV on Grafton street 65 and 66 is 'owned' by Aviva. So if you have a private pension plan (specifcally Aviva Irl Irish Property Fund (g) )with Aviva get on to Aviva Fund Managers with regards to HMV outstanding debt (rent) and new lease terms (if any)

FYIW......would be a great place for Apple. Might turn around Grafton street with a new flagship tennant that might attract more tenants to a street that is sadly declining.....very rapidly. (only people making money in G street are the buskers:D)

Comet, Jessops (camera chain) Woolworths, HMV.......all gone bust in the last 3 years. Doubt it is going to be a megastore ( excluding Apple). Although maybe eBay or Amazon might consider opening a service center.........and we can all look in the window and watch people answering phones. Seems to be the only thing that government classifies as FDI.

different prices for the same item in their Grafton St and Henry St stores was a regular occurance as was two or more of the same cds in their section also marked differently not to mention the times you would find stock missing or in the wrong sections.im sorry that people lost their jobs but isn't this the job of the staff.rushing around doing nothing with folders in their hands they would nearly knock you over.the only time they were anytime friendly was at Christmas when their jobs were already on the line and it was did you find everything you wanted to every customer.as for Tower,aswell as being a dear kip for boxsets and imports and having their pathetic tiny out of date selection of blu-rays tucked away in a corner beside the adult soft porn the staff seem to be permanently stoned out of their gourd more interested in listening to 60's prog rock loudly god help you if you have a query as all you'll get is a blank stare and an incomprehensible mumble if you're lucky.both these chains have been robbing their customers for years and then wonder why people are buying online let them close good riddance

In fairness, there is more to the demise of these shops than the economic woes of the country. Each of the shops mentioned, offer media that is easily bought online in either the same format or in a digital format. That is, in my opinion, the biggest contributor to declining business for the likes of Virgin, Waterstones, HMV et. al. Granted, if there had been no economic crash, they probably would have survived a few more years and perhaps even managed to adapt to the times. No recovery now is going to suddenly turn things around for the likes of HMV. The path is set. Cheap, digital media is on the rise.

That's nonsense. I've always found the staff in Tower pleasant, on the ball and helpful.

Tower is not a chain. The Irish store has been independent for some time now.

Yep Tower Record stores exist independently in Ireland and Japan, separate from each other and the American chain that went bankrupt. According to wiki there's a few Mexican stores too.
