Adams also has a substantial income from his books as an author.

Gerry told Marian , that he has no money , and is in trouble with the house in Donegal , and negotiating with the banks .

Marian then challenged him , as to how he could afford his recent health operations in the USA , and Gerry replied that his best friend paid all expenses for him .

To be fair, perhaps he did not have adequate Insurance Cover in US.
However if he has health Insurance here, I'm sure the operations could have been carried out here.

Why, how many books did he sell?

What does Mrs Adams do for a living?
No idea if she is a paid staff member, but she is very involved in Sinn Féin herself. I'm just curious if the poster is aware that Adams is married, and that if she is also on the AI wage, that would easily explain how they could afford to have a mortgage on a house in Donegal.

I'm no SF apologist but cmon it's hardly charvet shirts and Abbeville here.

    Hope he gets things sorted.

Was kind of shocked to be honest as I have bought all his books.
But then again 80 odd euro won't put much of a dent in the celtic-tiger priced hole that his finances are in.

Anyway I am enjoying his new twitter account brilliant stuff !

Yep the twitter is him, great craic. His teddy bear is in a same sex relationship and Gerry is worried if he is too young

A month ago when this was being discussed on other threads (the health issue) I kept reading a statement from Sinn Fein that Mr Adams had paid for it himself and only his flights were paid for by friends. Something doesn't add up.

    http://www.thestar.ie/star/gerry-adams-denies-hypocrisy-over-private-care/

A spokesman for the party confirmed his flights were funded by support network Friends of Sinn Fein and that Mr Adams paid for the surgery himself.

Very strange. A bit like was he a member or not?

Bollox! There is NO requirement in law that a person standing for election actually a house in that constituency.
In fact I'm not certain there is even a requirement that the candidate even normally reside in the constituency in which they stand.

I'm pretty certain some of the early TD's weren't even in the country.

Its masterful politically. I mean he really can empathise with the common man now because he has mortgage difficulty too. 90,000 people in 90 day mortgage arrears could elect a few more TDs.

Masterful whatever advisor came up with this stroke.

Enda ought to engineer a similar financial difficulty perhaps?

Where did it say he is refusing to pay any bank any money? It says he is talking to a bank about rearranging a payment structure, which is well within his rights to do.

People will look for any reason in the world to have a go at others.

Get off your high horse there bosco.

Where does it say it? It says it right there in the article. The one we're talking about. Read it again if it's unclear to you. He agreed to pay the bank a certain amount of money each month and now claims he is unable to when in reality he can but chooses not to. Why is he "well within his rights" to negotiate over this? What moral or legal rights would these be? He has the money so he should cough up. It's that simple.

You may well be right. Though I have some recollection of Austin Currie living in Limerick when he was seeking election?

For gods sake, listen to the interview he was asked about his house and the mortgage stuff was an offhand by the way

Eh, no, it doesn't say anything of the kind.

Show me one place in the article where it says he isn't paying back the loan? It says he is struggling to pay it and recently had to remortgage it. Where does it say he refusing to pay anything? Everyone has a right to talk to a bank to restructure payments of a loan, whether it's an overdraft of €50 or a mortgage of €10,000,000 everyone has the right and freedom to approach the lender to extend, top up or restructure the repayments to make it suitable for both parties, for whatever reason.

Again, get off the high horse there bosco.

Healy rae has kerry all sewn up. He's a landlord with several properties as wellas a few farms of land and a petrol station and plaant hire business who most likely get huge amounts of business from the council.

I'd love to see inside his houses and check that they are all compliant with safety and fire regulations and properly registered with the PTRB.
