He cant blame that on his TD salary as hes only been a TD for two years and I assume his house is up north.

I assume a TDs salary is more than an MPs salary.

I suppose they have stopped robbing banks so his income has dropped somewhat.

It was his money, he just didn't want to fill out the forms.

I think he bought a house in Dundalk or Dorogheda but I cant see how he could be having mortgage problems.
Is the op sure he didnt just hear Adams giving an opinion on mortgage arrears or something similar?

He told Marian Finucane last week he was in trouble with the banks over his house in Donegal.

His family home in Belfast and he has a holiday home in Donegal. Now that he's a TD I'd imagine he has one in Louth as well.

    Sunday Times.

Gerry Adams, the Sinn Fein leader, has remortgaged his holiday home in Donegal. Adams, who revealed last weekend that he was "in negotiations with the bank" over the house remortgaged it with Bank of Ireland on November 30. Adams and his wife Colette bought a plot outside Gortahork in 2000 with a mortgage of IR£50,000. They first installed a mobile home before constructing a traditional cut-stone cottage. The TD for Louth revealed last week the couple "was in deep trouble" over the property. "One of my ambitions is to keep that house at all costs, not for me but because my family use it. It's a great bolt hole" he told RTE Radio.

Shades of P Flynn here, for Brussels, Dublin and Mayo substitute Belfast, Louth and Donegal. Pretty impressive on a wage of €35,000 a year, P Flynn was taking home IR £100,000.

It's a holiday home in Donegal.

I thought his book royalties alone would pay enough.

I don't believe for one second that Adams has any money worries.

Personally I like that one (it has a plausibility to it) and I shall be re-telling it as gospel to friends and aquaintances at appropriate moments

Jasus he must be countless little hide always with his experience. Desperately trying to hold on to a holiday home sounds pretty stupid on its own terms.

So to summarise, Gery Adams is refusing to pay the (I presume) state owned bank money he owes it while at the same time he is in receipt of sufficient funds to do so from the public purse via his TD's salary but instead diverts the money to his party. I consider this theft of public money on the part of Sinn Féin. This is as bad as any Fianna Fáil stroke pulling-can anyone say the much-maligned Pee Flynn did anything worse?

No, he doesn't.apparently he "stays with friends" when he "visits" his constituency. His words in the Marian Finoucane interview.

Hopefully he can get his problems sorted out re his house in Donegal

If that was the case he wouldn't be legally entitled to stand for election in that constituency. Either he was lying then, or now, I suppose. :D

I'm just a tad sceptical that a man who had no problem claiming €1 million in a job he never worked in would now find himself so hard up he had to re-mortgage...

Of course he's only earning €93,000 basic salary ... before expenses...

Wait, is it April 1st yet?

Bollox! There is NO requirement in law that a person standing for election actually a house in that constituency.
In fact I'm not certain there is even a requirement that the candidate even normally reside in the constituency in which they stand.

Probably right. But Gerry managed to satisfy the authorities that he was entitled to be put on the electoral register in Louth so that he could vote for himself. I don't think that a UK citizen could gain this entitlement by just staying with friends in the Republic now and again. So he must have an interest in the property at his electoral register address in Co Louth.

Residency would be enough, so say he lived at a certain address at the time he was put on the electoral register would suffice.

Residency would involve some interest in the property either owning it, renting it, or paying board and lodings to the owner. I'd say the Dail authorities who deal with expenses would be interested in a situation where a TD was being given free accommodation by friends.

Apparently he may have questions to answer as well about the free gift of medical treatment he received in America.

Where did it say he is refusing to pay any bank any money? It says he is talking to a bank about rearranging a payment structure, which is well within his rights to do.

It turns out that Mr Adams did not get any free accommodation in 2012 otherwise it would be declared here.

    http://www.sipo.gov.ie/en/PressReleases/Name,16040,en.htm

So he is managing the upkeep of three residences on a salary of about €40,000, not surprising then that this has caused him some financial difficulty.

    Amazing.

Sinn Féin TD's are paid the average industrial wage (or something to that effect) with the rest of the money going towards funding the party.

The manner in which Sinn Fein TDs spend their wages is irrelevant. They draw their full wages from the state. A Sinn Fein TD costs the state the same as every other TD. More, if you count the toner.

They are paid the full amount and they choose to donate some of their earnings to their favourite cause - their party.
