Unless your speedo was gps fed its impossible to get it accurate. Tires are different size between brands, even tire wear will affect it. There are loads of stuff that affect a speedo. If a speedo isnt accurate they need a % to ignore so after that your definitely speeding
    corkgsxr wrote: »
10% both ways. Your speedo could be under reading too. Thats why I used to use the gps to do it without guessing what the speedo is doing
Speedos are allowed to overread, but not to underread. This is why almost all car speedos read 5-8% more than the actual speed.

Fair enough but iv always stayed at the 10% extra and never got a ticket. And id pass at least one a day

Not so. The indicated speed must never be less than the actual speed. Otherwise we'd all be blaming the car manufacturer.
(There's also some limit imposed on the permitted error on the over-reading.)

So much of this thread is utter nonsense, hearsay and pub talk. Especially the bit about seeing it in the distance and going in another direction, and Garda cars with 300m range. If you want to defeat these things at least understand the tech involved and it's limitations. It's not difficult.

How accurate are the signs which say slow down watch your speed and tells you what your current speed is......there is one on the N11 in Wicklow.....and i always get my speedo bang on 80km/h .....but the sign always displays 72km/h

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,366 ✭✭✭mikeecho

    Long and short of it:

The Camera and Radar beam are angled at 22º across the road.
    The radar spreads at 4.5º

(can someone do the maths please)

You must be within the radars beam for a speed to be taken.
The picture is taken at the same time.
The picture is actually a still, as the camera is a video camera.

Because as already stated here your car speedo can overread by up to 10%.. ie sign shows your actual speed vs speedo's inaccurate reading.

Thank you for summing it up as has been down countless times here. There is a decent video on YouTube if someone wants to look it up.

Really roughly, the Maths equates to, if the van is monitoring a 10m (~30ft) wide section of road (i.e About the width of an average two land N road), you'd have to be closer than 24.75m (~75ft)

Bear in mind between 80 to 100km/h you'll cover that distance in just about a second.

So in other words, you should in theory have about 3 seconds (i.e. 100m) to see it, slow down and pass it as under no reasonable circumstances are you going to turn a corner and it to be 'just there'

Because your speedo is over-reading. Most car speedo's over-read the faster you are travelling. No car speedo, as has been said, will ever give you a speed faster than you are travelling. Thats in EU law. If you car does this its not to spec.

For instance, below 50km/h my car is dead on. 63km/h (Speedo) is 60km/h true speed. 125km/h is 120km/h true speed. I personally wouldn't allow 10% as in most cars its far closer to 5%. I would doubt any car would over read by 10% with stock tyres etc.

The reason Uncle John wasn't pulled for doing 110km/h in a 100km/h zone was probably because he was doing about 102km/h in reality. GoSafe Vans have a 3 to 4km/h tolerance I'm lead to believe. So in my case, at 111km/h in a 100km/h zone I'd be right on the margin (I wouldn't however do this, far to close cut)

If anyone really wants to get the most out of their car in this country (Speedwise) you'd probably be wise investing in a proper GPS trip computer. Most are accurate to +/- 0.22km/h. An iPhone or similar is probably close to +/- 1km/h

Is the picture of the reg not taken from the rear when you pass the van seeing as that's when the flash kicks in?

You cannot see the flash. Its infrared. You may see a slight flash in certain lighting conditions and you may see a flash from a Garda van. However seeing / not seeing a flash is not a indication of whether you were caught or not.

They take photos, from the rear of the van only, of traffic going in both directions (If applicable)

    @ ironclaw

is it time for an updated sticky ?

I can do one up with your info/ pics, adding some tech specs.

but I'm afraid the tech specs might confuse some, and irritate others who believe certain operations are calculated differently.

Wouldn't do any harm. I'll do one up if you like and if you want to PM me any info.

Do you think the OP needs that assurance 12 years later?

How do you wait 9 months between your first and second posts and then find a 12 year old thread to post it in? It's some achievement to have even found this thread.
