Estimating the longevity of mince is a bit of a lottery. You could feed a family with 1 killo if you used it very sparingly with pasta etc. But you are still eating the pasta. It would go faster as cottage pie but you could stuff that with spuds, and faster still as a burger.

I would have meat or very occasionally fish with every meal except breakfast during the week (Id have a cooked breakfast every saturday and sunday). I'd never have a sandwich even without meat in it. The only execption is if I had a omlette which, though I often cook up bacon or something in this case too.

I usually buy mince in 454gram packets and this usually gets me two portions of bolognese.

TBH, it sounds like you're eating way, way more meat than is recommended.

He is but most people are. I think you are more unusual than you think.

That 20 euro worth of meat is nothing and a normal family would consume it in no time, it wouldn't last a week unless you are feeding a pack of semi starved anorexics.

5 chicken breasts? Considering that most chicken breasts sold in deals are pretty small then having 2-3 for one person at a meal is normal.

Cooking is heating. If at all.

That is really a good point......cooking is heating.
And a really disturbing one at that.

I bought 500kg of mince at the market a few days ago, and we got 4 portions of spag bol and two massive burgers out of that.

Just how massive were those burgers? :p

You do realise that meat only forms part of the meal? It's not as if one chicken breast would be your dinner - presumably you'd be having loads of veg and potatoes with it and perhaps a dessert afterwards. I agree that 20 euro of meat wouldn't go far for a family of 4 or 5 (although it's perfectly possible for it to last over a week, with decent dinners), but it's bloody loads for a single person.

I don't know anything about recommended amounts of meat but to be honest I don't think I'm eating much more than an average person.

Today I had a hot chicken roll for lunch and I will either have chilli con carne (approx 227grams of mince) with a 62 gram bag of rice or a burger, 2 pork ribs and a few chicken dippers, either of which don't look overly excessive to me. Sure a decent steak is 250 to 300 grams.

Yes I eat two pork chops or two chicken breasts per sitting but they are very small. A chicken breast is usually only around 100 grams so Id have two and some salad for my lunch for instance, pork chops arent much bigger and I would just have some beans and some mixed frozen veg with them usually.

I do like a lot of meat in my chillis, curries and bolognese as its much more beneficial to my weight to have less pasta and rice and more meat.

I have a huge appetite, work out or play soccer 6 times a week etc etc. But when I make a Chilli or Bolognese for the family (4 adults) then the total mince used is between 400-450 grams so I would say 227 for one person is overkill without doubt.

Maybe not more than the average person, but the average person I'd guess eats more than they need. Ultimately though how much is right for you depends on your daily activity.

My dinner is ~150g Chicken breast, 200g Potato, 1/2 cup of veg and maybe an Uncle Ben's sauce with a pint of milk and protein supplements. I lift weights 3 days a week on run 5ks on weekends and that relatively small dinner is more than sufficient.

200g of mince per serving?!

Admittedly if I was cooking for 3 or 4 people 500 grams is all I would cook (not evenly distributed) though there would be much more pasta/rice involved then.

When I cook for myself I always end up eating it in two meals, if I get a 550gram pack I can usually make 2.5 maybe at a stretch 3 meals out of it depending on how hungry I am.

As I said though, I rarely eat potatoes with chicken/pork/steak dinners so eat more meat and would only have half a mug of pasta or 62 grams of rice with other things where most people would have more than twice that but less meat.

I dont see that as a massive amount to be honest, as I said a good steak is well over 200 grams and a decent burger or two smaller ones would be up around that too.

Well, this article talks about recommended daily allowance. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-12577618 Admittedly, you have to take these things with a grain of salt, but most of the doctors and nutritionists I've met seem to agree that a matchbox-sized piece of meat is ideal and that the rest of your meal should be potatoes/rice and veg.

I think 227g of mince is a massive amount for a single person in one serving. A burger, two pork ribs and some chicken dippers for one meal? It all just sounds like way too much meat to me. It might be more beneficial for your weight to have more meat and less rice, but probably not for your health!

To bring things back on topic (sort of), eating so much meat means that dinners are much more expensive than they need to be. If you're on any sort of a budget, meat can easily (and probably should) be bulked out with lots of veg and other things.

All the literature I have read said a piece of meat the size of your palm. I hate how this week they'll tell you to eat X amount and next week they'll tell you to eat Y amount.

I'm 31 and I've been working since I was 16, have been to college (I bet you see that as some sort of disadvantage to knowing the 'real world'), bought my own home, and have a family. In between I've lived and worked abroad, dealt with cancer in the family, and got married. What real life experience am I missing to qualify for your definition of knowing about life?

Sounds like a normal enough life. From what you have said in this post you haven't been through a whole lot of hardships though.
I'm 23 and have been through a hell of a lot more **** than what you have described.

I don't think my life experience is less or more valid than yours or anyone else's. I resent the implication from that poster that most replies came from people who don't know what life is all about, whatever that means. It doesn't mean getting into some sort of hardship Olympics, everyone has ups and downs, it doesn't mean your experience of life is more 'real'.

I'm not talking about you or me here, but do you not think that someone who has gone through extreme hardships in life will have more "life experience" than someone who leads a normal life with the usual few ups and downs? Age has nothing to do with it.

Martyr complex much? Everyone has problems and difficulties. I don't think you need to spend a childhood in foster care being burned by cigarette ends to 'understand life'.

aren't you lucky - 30 K for you and your girlfriend. Average of 575 per week. Lovely. Now try adding a mortgage to that, a couple of kids, school fees, property tax, food and clothes, and all the other expenses that come with life - a different story then isn't it??? Don't judge others on your own experience.

Re. your **** hole country in Eastern Europe - that means nothing. We are dealing with Ireland and Irish expenses.

In all fairness, you can't moan about those things seeing as how they were choices. You choose to get a mortgage and reproduce. And children cost a fortune. If you can't afford them, then that's living outside of your means.
