You're right, it is the 27-pin socket for the multiple working cable. It's still used on the push-pull 201s when coupled to push-pull stock so the loco can be controlled remotely.

I never noticed that the positioning was different though, but I had a look at some photos and you're spot on.

215 in Sallins hauling freight @ 14:15. Quick question it was coming from Dublin so is that the down line?

Possibly safer to say it is working a down train if it is coming from Dublin. Did you see it pass through, or was it in the loop north of the station?

It was just North of the station stopped at the signal so may have been in the loop before continuing southbound. Another freight train passed a couple of hours earlier towards Dublin but I'd didn't see the loco hauling it.

Out of curiosity what route would 215 have taken from Sallins to get to Ballina? Was that the final destination for the freight or was it the last of a number of stops?

Ballina is the end of the line for the IWT freight. Just goes from North Wall to Ballina Yard.

After Sallins it would have went to Portarlington and taken the Galway line.
It takes the Galway line and then turns off after Athlone to head to Ballina as far as I can recall.

Got an answer to my question on another forum.

The modifications was done because when working push pull services the cable would become disconnected from time to time by the brake hose if the the train went over points or sharp turns causing the train to fail. In the new position the cable is clear of the brake hose at all times.

For some reason 202,3,5 and 210-214 were modified even though they could not work push pull trains and 201 and 204 just happened to be left as is like the other non push pull 201s should have.

Noticed one of the Enterprise sets was turned the wrong way today. Saw a set being pushed to Belfast through Howth Junction at 11:15 by 230 with an EGV. 230 seemed to be idling from the sound of it and was "yinging" away like a UK class 66.

The 10:35 Central-Amien Street sat down just before Moira this morning. The passengers on board were detrained at Lisburn and accomodated on the 12:35 service. In addition, a Mark 4 set had issues this morning on the 07:00 Kent-Heuston service. No work on the locos involved as of yet but it is not a great way to lead into a busy weekend on the two mainlines.

Any reported problems with the 201s anyone heard???

A 201 pulled into the passing loop in Athlone Midland yesterday on its way to ballina with a liner.
It was stopped fir about 10 mins , honked the horn looking like it was about to pull away....when it reversed, Looked like it was propelling back over the white bridge over the shannon and back to the main Athlone Southern station.

Saw it passing by again about 20 mins later.

Anyone know what loco's failed today on the Cork route, 12.20 Cork-Heuston terminated at Limerick Junction and 17.00 Heuston-Cork also had to terminate at Limerick Junction. Guessing no work done on any of them if the loco were the problem.

217 was the loco. The train limped from Cork to LJ. Attempts were made to fix the issue at Mallow and Charleville but to no avail.

    Pushing?

Could it be 224 on the back of liner being towed to Inchicore after failing in Ballina yard last week? It would make sense to be there as it would be easier to remove from the liner and drag from North Wall to Inchicore.

    224 14.00 Heuston-Cork and 17.20 return.
    221 13.20 Cork-Heuston and 17.00 return.

8208 transferred from Connolly to Inchicore this afternoon.

8208? or do you mean 208?

Ya but it has 8208 on the loco, NI Railways own it and for some reason that's the way its numbered. Same for 209 but as it doesn't have 8209 on it because its in the old entreprise colours.
