Pre workout supps to be taken on "an empty stomach" = how long since eating?

Just got some Animal Pump for the first time, been looking for a pre-workout and there's enough hype about this to make it interesting.
It says to take it on an empty stomach. I've always found in the past that if I'm at the point where my stomach is actually rumbling, it saps my energy and seriously hits my lifting performance, so I presume "empty stomach" in this context doesn't mean actually hungry.

So how long after eating should one take a supp like this which requires an empty stomach? At the moment I'd tend to start my lifting sessions maybe an hour after a good meal, I presume that's probably not enough time for something like this though?
