There has been a suspected arson attack at a controversial house in Ballyshannon.
Members of the fire service were called to the scene of a house fire in the Parkhill area shortly before 3am this morning.
The house in question has been the root of much controversy in the town, as Donegal County Council recently purchased it at a price of €230,000 for the purposes of social housing. The five bedroom house in the upmarket Parkhill area was completely gutted in the fire which broke out at 3am this morning.

What a waste of a fine house.

Sure some things were not meant to be. Was it anywhere near buncrana ? That's a nice spot, i used to live there many years ago.

This particular destructive incident is as suspicious as the Accquisition of the property in the first-place was,with it's "special permission from The Department to overspend" hoo-hah.

It will be most interesting to see if Donegal County Council will emerge from this financially unscathed

Doubtless The Gardaí will be rounding up members of Donegal County Council now to get them to account for their movements.... :rolleyes:

This house was bought for €26,000 more than the councils limit. Council house should be restricted to 3 bed houses. If you have more children and this is too small for you family, go buy your own house.

The entire "Social Housing" concept is widely discussed,on Boards and elsewhere,as are the more specific elements around this case.

I've no problem stating that YES,for a Local Authority to be given special authority for overspending in any specific case of this nature is a "Big Deal",particularly when such authorizations do not manifest themselves in the broader Social context.

I find it an oddly narrow minded way of interpreting the post.

The intent appears to revolve around making those who have issues with this particular housing policy appear to be against the greater mass of society also....does'nt wash with me though.

the story is about social housing, and he refferred to family in reciept of it as cúnts, so it seems obvious the he feels that people who avail of social housing are cúnts.
I cant see what else he could have meant.

The story is less about social housing and more about a €230k house that was earmarked to be given to a traveller family who don't travel.

Calling a traveller family cùnts was a bit OTT I grant you, but I personally don't think it's fair to blame a traveller family for the moron councillors in Donegal CC who approved the purchase of €230k on one house for social housing purposes. That's a crazy amount of money to be spending on one house for social housing.

And there are plenty of five bedroom houses dotted around the country that can be bought for a lot less than a quarter of a million euro.

You'd imagine the people for whom the house was intended wouldn't have a problem with relocating to another part of the country to avail of cheaper social housing.

I saw the cnutts reference as being directed at the human bit-players in the Tube video,the REAL stars being the unfortunate horses.

In this particular instance I think it is a somewhat reserved and tame description for them.

I would agree that this "Special" provision of €230,000 remains worthy of discussion,along however, with the question of exactly what amount of such provision can be realistically afforded any family of 13.

I demur at this "seems obvious" bit.

Charlemont's inclusion of a rather graphic photo,kinda removed any "confusion" I might have felt as to the intended target of the cnuts reference.

But it's all about perception I suppose ?
