On this bus this morning and the guy sitting across from me was listening to music on his ipod/phone. It was loud enough that you could here the lyrics of the song clearly, I found it strange that a long haired dude was blasting Olly Murs on his ipod instead of Korn or some rocky moshy music instead…

anyways some woman who was sitting towards the top of the bus comes down to him taps him on the shoulder and tells him (not asks) to turn it down or turn it off, which the guy does and apologies

Now its his ipod and his ears so I’m sure it wasn’t just because it was Olly Murs (which I may have agreed with) but because it was too loud...

Is this normal behaviour? Would you tell somebody to turn off their ipod if some on the bus told you/asked and would you comply to a request/order to lower your music?

I would have told her to fcuk off personally.

You choose to listen to your music, it's shít when people listen to it so loudly they force you to listen to whatever horsepoop that happens to be en vogue. Your music, not ours. Keep the volume down. She was dead right and fair play.

Why are people spending €300 on Kit to play mp3's and then go and play them into cheap Headphones that cost only €3.00.

I'm of the opinion that on public transport right beside the little emergency hammer for breaking windows there should be an little emergency wire cutter for snipping headphone leads.

I've never told anyone to turn down their music or whatever. I just curse them under by breath.

For some reason I'm always cautious about how loud my iPod is. That said, I can't imagine ever wanting to listen to music so loud that it's audible all through the bus. Can't imagine that's comfortable at all.

Lady is well within her rights to request this though

At least get s pair of proper bucket headphones to muffle the noise a bit.

And answering a polite request with "fuck off" is eventually going to get you slapped.

It's impossible to know how loud your music is for others when your earphones are in. The lady pointed it out to him and he adjusted the volume. Well done to both parties

When I was younger and got the bus a lot, every so often some oul wans would tell me to turn my music down, even though I know it wasn't that loud. Then they would try and talk the ear off me about their medical problems and the trouble they were having with the local gurriers. It was just an excuse for me to take my headphones off!

Wised up to that one pretty quickly.

If the music genuinely is so loud that you can hear the lyrics than fair play to her for saying something to him. Maybe he genuinely didn't know how loud it was? I usually just move in that situation rather than confront someone.

She'll do that to the wrong person someday and get a slap (not that i agree with anything like that btw)

If she had asked politely fair enough, but she sounds extremely rude/entitled.

The guy turned it down after being given out to by some random woman (which he probably found embarrassing).

I don't listen to music at all on transport purely because I wouldn't want to annoy anyone, but I'd feel pretty stubborn in that situation, and someone equally as rude as the woman could very well have felt provoked and gone on the offence. I think that if the guy turned it down after being spoken to like that, then he would have turned it down if asked nicely. I don't see why the women felt the need to issue orders.

I'm very much a rule-follower. Even if a rule seems silly to me, I'll follow it unless I have a genuine reason not to. I had a boyfriend once who used to always put his feet up on the seat and I'd always ask him not to. One time, he had his feet up on the seat and some woman came over and ordered him to take them down, accompanied by a lovely filthy glare. Regardless of whether I agreed with him doing it or not, I told that woman where to go. You don't go around speaking to people like that for something as small as transport etiquette.

This is why I carry a leatherman.

I was in a pub one night last week and there was a crowd in playing rebel songs on the jukebox. I was in a closed off area where the pool table was and the speaker was blaring it out at us. The will power it took to not go over and snip that wire was unreal. You'd think in a situation like that you'd be able to at least turn off, or turn down the speaker.

He probably wasn't aware how audible it was to everyone else. When pointed out to him he adjusted the volume accordingly. Woman was assertive, man reacts politely.

I try to be conscious of how loud my music is when I'm on public transport, I know it can be pretty irritating. Having noise cancelling earphones helps (and are generally better quality).

Erm, if it's so loud that you can hear the vocals, how could you NOT know it's that loud?? Seriously, there's a difference between a slight hissing sound that's audible to the general public and music that blares out.

It's easy to test how audible your music is.

I have a decent pair of bucket headphones and I just put them on my leg or something (so that the phones are covered like they would be on my ears) and test the volume.

If you have OK headphones, you can play music much louder than earphones anyway.

Come to think of it, every time I hear over-loud music from another person's headphones, it's either shit dance music or metal.

I was on the bus last week and someone had their Ipod on too loud. They were listening to an audio book and you couldn't hear it until the bus was stopped at lights or in traffic.

Only problem for them was that I think they were listening to 50 shades of Grey because there was some very graphic description of riding happening. It was actually quite funny and one of the few times I was glad that the volume was turned up.

I'll listen to my music at a level sufficient to drown out people's mindless conversations. Usually isn't overly audible to everyone else.

10 seats away over a noisey dublin bus chugging its way around rush hour traffic and peoples voices i doubt her ears were that much effected but it was i her attitude that stank, no please no thank you. The guy seemed like a real timid dude and i wonder if the hash smokin monkeys we usually have on the bus that dont use earphones and play on their music through their phones like a ring tone, would she be as quick to confront them

it maybe annoying but its not like the chap lit up a ciggarette, if somebody is laughing or joking loudly would you tell them to shut up? same thing in my book (annoying but there is nothing you can do about as its a free country!)

Might be for a seperate thread but I find old people to be the rudest people of all.

Of most of my instances of coming across obnoxious people, most of them have involved people aged over 50.
