Just back from Lordship, the club and community is pretty numb to say the least.
Adrian was just appointed head of Òg sport in the club, looking after the juveniles, how can anyone explain this to the children who looked up to him so much.
Yes the scumbags left a reported €40k behind them, but they also left a massive void in the community as whole.
Whoever is shielding these bastards wake up and turn them in.

I spoke to a number of people who apparently knew him direct this morning in Drogheda (prior and after to signing a book of condolence at the The Tholsel).
All said roughly the same thing.
He was a genuine, very genuine soft hearted person who loved life and being with people. He was well known in the community and got involved in social events beyond just his official role.

    Its a ruddy shame.
I feel so sorry for his family. They don't deserve this.

The latest RTE report seems to give a believable account of the incident. He obviously hadn't realised there was a robbery in progress. No reason at all to shoot him.

I see Minister Shatter visited the station. I can't imagine there was a welcoming reception.

Just heard Minister Shatter making a few digs at PJ Stone of the GRA on Drivetime.

Have to say Mr. Stone seems to using the tragedy for furtherance of his members conditions.

Difficult stuff, but Stone is offside on this one, in my opinion .

Any update on the two that were arrested in Dublin?
I can't see them having anything to do with it if the getaway car is in the North...

It's being reported that the scummers left €40,000 behind in the robbery

    http://www.rte.ie/news/2013/0128/364816-gardai-liaise-with-psni-in-detective-murder-probe/
The gang that shot dead Detective Garda Adrian Donohoe did not succeed in
stealing all the money from the Lordship Credit Union in Co Louth.
As much as €40,000 in cash and cheques was left behind after the gang fled
    the scene with just €4,000.

The money was part of a cash collection from four credit unions in the area,
which Det Garda Donohoe and his colleague were escorting to be deposited in a
    bank in Dundalk.

Gardaí now say that at least five men were involved in the robbery.

The gang were armed with a shotgun, handgun and hammer; they had their faces
    covered and were wearing tracksuits.

They blocked the exit of the credit union car park and shot Garda Donohoe,
41, in the head when he got out of his car to see what was going on.

Detective Garda Joe Ryan was held at gunpoint while the robbery took
    place.

Detectives are waiting to conduct detailed interviews with credit union staff
and Det Ryan, who witnessed the murder.

Gardaí believe a cross-border gang suspected of carrying out a previous armed
robbery on the credit union 18 months ago could have been involved in the
    murder.

Maybe it is my over active imagination, but this dont seem quite right to me and why wasnt the other detective his partner shot or injuried?

What are you insinuating ? would it be better if his partner was shot as well?
You accusing his partner of something?

His partner was held at gunpoint having just seen his friend being shot in the head with a shotgun for Christ's sake.

He probably did what they told him. It's not really rocket science.

I think you are wrong with this line of thinking tbh and doing an injustice to his partner in the process.

I have said it before and I will say it again.....our Gardai need to be armed, they need to be able to protect themselves.

Reading through this thread I am shocked and appalled at the amount of speculation and whinging about the government and general petty arguing that is going on.

A Garda has been shot down in the line of duty. I am shocked that anyone would post anything but their condolences.

RIP Detective Donohoe and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues.

Detective Garda Donohoe was armed as was his collegue, it made no difference when confronted with evil such as this.

    RIP.

What point is that exactly? That we should just accept it and not discuss how it came to be or how it could have been prevented?

the answer is in your own post, where's rolly eyes when you need them!

I have said it before and I will say it again.....our Gardai need to be armed, they need to be able to protect themselves.

Approx. a quarter ( c. 3000, I believe ) of all Gardai are authorised to carry weapons in the line of duty. I don't know what proportion of those carry weapons routinely. However, I believe Garda Donohoe was armed at the credit union.

The issue for every government is how far does it go in arming Gardai. A fully armed force radically changes the risk profile for every Garda and for the public. It's considered that, in most cases, being unarmed is safer as an unarmed Garda represents a much smaller threat to a criminal, and thereby makes it less likely that an armed criminal would shoot an unarmed Garda.

As far as I can see, we have two options.

1- Every money holding organisation in need of AGS escort gets a full army escort also. A squad of highly trained soldiers sporting automatic weapons.

    Or

2- AGS with the full backing of the government of the day, go to war against criminal gangs.

The people of Ireland are sick sh1t of them. Murders every other week in big urban areas. A plague that is spreading. I never thought I would say this, but I would nearly favour interment for involvement in organised criminal gangs.

It's time we took our counties and cities back.

Saying that, AGS have done some trojan work in Limerick in this particular area and they should be praised for it.

Well the Gardai would have drawn their guns and engaged them but seeing his partner shot in the head clearly made the point that they weren't ****ing around so he surrendered... the right thing to do.

    i disagree
then we would have garda who would be trigger happy like the american cops
its fine the way it is
their doing a good job ,
detectives are armed all of them are thats also a known fact and the situation still got him killed
so i dont get where your coming from to be honest , if anything the gardi are doing a great job , seen on the news they said the last gardi to be shot down was in the 1980's/90's? and since the entire gardi force except for detectives are unarmed their doing one hell of a job.

    R.I.P

There is actually existing legislation for criminal gangs very similar to that which is used for terrorism but the DPP has yet to prosecute anyone under it. One can only speculate why.

And i don't think option 2 will happen under the present government. Not without severe public pressure.
