Israel admits forcing birth control shots on Ethiopian women

After Israel was accused of forcing Ethiopian women to accept injections of the contraceptive Depo-Provera in an attempt to lower birth rates among black immigrants, an official has for the first time admitted use of the drug among Ethiopian women.

In a letter to the Israeli Health Ministry Director General Prof. Ron Gamzu, Sharona Eliahu-Chai of the Association of Civil Rights in Israel, demanded that the Israeli health authorities stop administering the injections immediately. The letter also demanded that the authorities conduct an investigation into allegations stemming from the practice.

The Association of Civil Rights in Israel is a group that represents several women’s rights and Ethiopian immigrants’ groups.

The National reports that Hedva Eyal, project coordinator of a women's rights research group, said in Haifa: "I believe there is a deliberate targeting of these [Ethiopian] women."

According to The National, Eyal and other activists say that the birth rate in the Ethiopian community in Israel has halved in the past 10 years. Eyal's civil rights group and six others have asked the Israeli health ministry to explain the widespread use of Depo-Provera injections among Ethiopians.

They should. The problem being is whenever Israel gets held to account for anything they send a couple of Apache helicopters in to blow the sh*t out of the Gaza Strip or South Lebanon to take attention away from it.

There's a slight difference between encouraging safe sex and forced, secretly given contraception.

I heard an anti-occupation activist claim recently that Palestinians make up 50% of the population of Israel (if Gaza and the West Bank are included, presumably).

Does that seem likely?

The weird thing is that Israel airlifted about 40,000 Ethiopians that they deemed to be jewish enough during the famines in the 1980s.

Odd that they're now turned on them.

Why do we have an irrevocable right to pop out a young'un?

The government reserves the right to take your kids from you but doesn't have the right to stop you from having kids? That's just a recipe for disaster.

It seems to me to be one of those "you have it because you have it" things but I can't think of a logical argument for it. It intuitively makes sense you should have that right but that's obviously not an argument.

Anyone?

Yep.

Israel has illegally annexed Occupied East Jeruslam and the Occupied Golan Heights as it gives them more lebensraum with the right population "balance". Nice democracy, eh? :rolleyes:

The so-called big withdrawl from Gaza (of remember, illegal colonialists) was simply an economic decision to move them out of Gaza and into the West Bank and eventually doubling the amount of criminal land stealers in the WB with the plan to eventually grab as much of the WB as possible while condemning Gaza to hell.

With the illegal apartheid wall built into the WB and the ghettoization of Gaza, their plan worked for them.

The West meanwhile punish Israel by, em, increasing trade instead of dishing out sanctions.

A government official has for the first time acknowledged the practice of injecting women of Ethiopian origin with the long-acting contraceptive Depo-Provera.
Health Minister Director General Prof. Ron Gamzu has instructed the four health maintenance organizations to stop the practice as a matter of course. The ministry and other state agencies had previously denied knowledge or responsibility for the practice, which was first reported five years ago. Gamzu's letter instructed "all gynecologists in the HMOs not to renew prescriptions for Depo-Provera for women of Ethiopian origin if for any reason there is concern that they might not understand the ramifications of the treatment." Gamzu also instructed physicians to avail themselves of translators if need be.
Gamzu's letter came in response to a letter from Sharona Eliahu-Chai of the Association of Civil Rights in Israel, representing several women's rights and Ethiopian immigrants' groups. The letter demanded the injections cease immediately and that an investigation be launched into the practice

Furthermore

About six weeks ago, on an Educational Television program journalist Gal Gabbay revealed the results of interviews with 35 Ethiopian immigrants. The women's testimony could help explain the almost 50-percent decline over the past 10 years in the birth rate of Israel's Ethiopian community. According to the program, while the women were still in transit camps in Ethiopia they were sometimes intimidated or threatened into taking the injection.

Because strictly speaking, we exist to procreate. Therefore to forcibly prevent procreation is to deny a person the very essence of existence.

Philosophically all humans are born equal, therefore saving any actions on a person's part that would warrant restriction of their rights (like committing a crime), no individual or government has the authority to remove rights from one person or group of people discriminately.

They'd presumably state that these were the wrong kind of Jews. Its the inevitable consequence of harping on about a 'jewish' state. Certain parties will seek to control the narrative of what is and is not Jewish and maintain hegemony in that manner.
