...because left wingers think crime should be celebrated and criminals not hindered at all?

Is that what I said? Cheers for clarifying bro.

Nope, and I don't think that's what I suggested you said either. My point is that there are plenty of people on 'the left' who take a similar view of criminals.

The broader point is that left/right dichotomy is far too simplistic. Bro.

FG are deemed right wing in Ireland but would be further to the left that the Democratic Party in America. In America the Democrats are deemed left wing. I dont see FG as a right wing party, more centrist-left wing. Fianna Fail were definitely a left wing party.

Would it be fair to say that, by Irish standards, you're very right-wing? I can't think of any other reason why someone would believe Fine Gael to be a centre-left party. I mean, if Fine Gael are centre-left and Fianna Fail are left-wing, where does that leave Labour? Far-left? Communist?

Left and right are about as useful as the colours on a football team's jerseys when it comes to politics, they are just tags to keep the hoi polloi fighting amongst themselves while the politicos get on with the real business.

I mean come on, how many different approaches to any given problem are there, hundreds of possible policies, and yet some people seem happy enough to divide this rainbow of options into just two philosophical camps. Makes no sense at all to me.

Then we get to the part where the meanings of left and right vary not just from person to person but from place to place. What's right here is often left in the USA.

All a cracked waste of time really.

    I didn't. I clearly said I wasn't surprised.
implying you think she's not bright (when you know that's not true)?
The user didn't see my point in two posts they directed at me and so I wasn't surprised by the third. Stop trying to make something out of nothing. You see my point now, happy days.

After Hours is not some sort of beacon of left-wing ideals as some people in this thread are suggesting. Most days you can't see past the threads about slashing the dole and people wanting murderers and rapists to have their crimes branded on their foreheads before being held down and surgically castrated. The attitudes towards drug addicts and the homeless, generally those who are less fortunate, couldn't be further from a left-wing ethos either.

That's a good point, though I think it does overrepresent the extreme right-wing among the population.
More people are likely to start a thread with an extreme opinion than people who think that the world's not perfect, but not bad overall, and the extreme views are going to attract more attention too.

I think it's more interesting to look at thanks instead of thread numbers. Go to any thread beginning with a racist/snobby/sexist OP, and you'll see that the posts with the most thanks are generally the ones contradicting them. I think that's an indicator that the silent (Boards) majority are fairly reasonable.
Or maybe the extreme conservatives don't give out thanks as they're selfish objectivists.

There still does, however, seem to have been an increase in young people expressing very extreme views. I think that can be put down to frustration at recessionary life, rebelling against somewhat liberal parents, or simply a case of these people having always been around but now being visible because they can use the internet.

This may be a little bit snarky, but I think a lot of Irish (I have the most experience with Irish people, rather than other nationalities) class themselves as left, and not like those crazy Americans, but, you know, they are.

Sure, if you come out and say you are a capitalist and believe in a free market and the state not getting involved in education, health, and pretty much privatizing everything you'd be eat out of it.

But if you came on and said you'd cut those dole scroungers (In a subtle way) or lower taxes (even though it has it's uses) then people would be more receptive of you. On the other hand, I can't see a lot of people in Ireland being very receptive to the Swedish (correct if wrong) 50% but it will be put into the education and health (but tbf that could be mistrust). And, to leave the economical, kind of, put in wind farms which split local people who care more about their own problems (or natures) than overall nature or problems, against non-local who don't care about local people problems or nature.
I think it's more interesting to look at thanks instead of thread numbers. And it's usually the same people thanking racist/extreme/so one measures.

Then stop moaning and steer the discussion that way instead of misrepresenting poster's points and using this smilie ->

Jesus, re-reg users used to be funny at least.

The trouble with a lot of right-wing views, is they often rely upon ignoring or outright denying reality/facts/evidence in some form or other.

Usually people who hold these views don't even realize that; just like the ability for ads/programs on TV to instill negative stereotypes through society, a lot of 'journalism' has less to do with informing the populace, and more to do with spreading unadulterated bullshít/propaganda in order to influence public opinion (and by extension, influence politics).

I've been studying economics as well the last year, and that's a particularly good (perhaps even the best) example, as there's an entire academic discipline there, where in a lot of (but by no means all) places, teaching is largely based on theories that are just flat out empirically wrong, many of which should have been discarded more than half a century ago (with some anachronisms managing to survive more than a century and half), but which have perpetuated so long due to politics.

There are entire industries out there (political 'think tanks' mostly), specifically setup in order to manufacture and disseminate bullshít, spread doubt about inconvenient science/evidence/facts, and just in general to spread very well-crafted propaganda, in order to suit the interests and political ambitions of those with enough money to fund these 'think tanks'; generally, if you spend the time tracing them back, this is where a lot of right-wing views tend to originate.

If you called for the old age pension to be cut by about €2 you'd be labelled an extreme right winger. That's basically why all the countries are now bust.

Unlike all left-wing views, which are totally scientific and undeniably correct.

    I find that highly doubtful.

    Let's test it:

The old age pension should be cut by about €2...

I don't consider myself to be right-wing (quite the opposite, in fact), and I think the old age pension should have been cut in line with other Social Welfare payments.

Like the red tops, the Irish Mail, much of Independent Newspapers' output, TV3?

The Irish red tops are very left wing. They know people with lower incomes tend to read their papers and lower income people usually vote to the left. If social welfare is ever cut, they report as if it was some type of malicious attack on the "most vulnerable in society". I dont know about the Irish Mail. In terms of TV3, Vincent Browne is left wing and the morning programme on TV3 is sickeningly left wing.

Go back to Nazi Germany :pac:. Seriously though, at this stage its hard to tell the difference between right and left. Id always considered myself left wing, but natural cynicism prevents me from truly believing in many left-wing policies.

Just shoot us, it would be quicker

Tried to change the automatic entitlement to medical cards for over 70's and the the protests began.

They are far more likely to deploy critical thinking though.

The thing about the Irish media being "left-wing" - often that simply means "fair", "not black and white" rather than a conscious effort to push a particular ideology. What's that saying - reality has a liberal bias.

Again, that's a 100% value judgement. I'd actually be inclined to see it the other way: left-wing thinking is often more humane, right-wing thinking is more strictly logical. Which you think is the correct approach is yet another value judgement.

    As above. :)
