How much does Leinster make each year, have you figures for the last four years, probably their most successful and then figures for the min 90"s when they have been depending on the IRFU for subsidies.

    I don't tbh but I can hazard a guess:

    Match tickets:
12 matches in the RDS with an average attendance of 14k average ticket price is €20 = €3,360,000
2 matches in Lansdowne Road with an average attendance of 45k average ticket price is €20 = €1,800,000
Lets say that ground rental costs account for half those figures that gives a total profit from match tickets of €2,580,000

    Sponsorships:
BOI and CCC probably pay 7 figure sums to be associated with Leinster, there's also the other sponsors like VW, FM104 et all which added up could well be worth another million.
So lets say the sponsorship brings in €3 million

    Prizemoney:
HEC winners and Pro12 finallists, should bring in at least a 6 figure sum.

So we could estimate that Leinster Rugby brings in about €6 million.
The average staff payment that they pay is probably about 75-100k

So it could be safe to assume that Leinster currently make a decent surplus each year meaning that they could afford an extra 250k outlay to keep their most important player

Also you can't really compare their finances today with their finances from the mid 90's

TBH, I think you're understating the ticket money but you seem to be be missing the that the branch have a lot more outlays than you mention, CEO, office staff, PR, advertising, coaching staff and players not paid for by the central contracts, development officers, etc.

The reason I asked for the comparisons was that some were saying that Leinster should cut the ties with the IRFU and go it alone, forgetting that the IRFU made them what they are and missing the point that without IRFU support they may not be allowed participate in the Pro12 or the H/cup, not much good being on your own and missing the top competitions available to them.

No I wasn't suggesting that the provinces should go it alone, merely suggesting that they should be allowed more autonomy from the IRFU. (but I can see where people got that idea).

In this case we have a situation that benefits the IRFU but puts Leinster at a disadvantage and the rules of the IRFU prevented Leisnter from trying to fight their corner as it were.

I was thinking along the lines of tracksuits myself, more appropriate really.

I never said you wanted them to go it alone, I said some posters and in previous posts I've shown where Leinster (had they the will and or the money) they could have topped up Sexton's salary.

Fair enough, thought you were talking about me ;)

No they shouldn't go it alone but if they have the will or the money to make decisions that are in their interests over the IRFU's interests then they should be allowed to make those decisions
