His wife and two brothers are all members of An Garda Síochána.

It is believed that one of his brothers had to be informed while on duty in Navan.

I don't know about anyone else but I have a huge amount of respect for the guards & the work that they do. It's a thankless job at the best of times but tonight's news just highlights the harsh reality facing them & I suppose with the way things have been in this country lately I'm a bit surprised it doesn't happen more often.

RIP to that man & my thoughts are with his family, friends & colleagues.

Some people seem to forget unarmed officers of the Garda Siochana were gunned down by Republican heroes wielding guns, one or two shot in the back.

Mad Men's Don Draper : What you call love was invented by guys like me, to sell nylons.

    The Times has confirmed that two of the c*nts have been apprehended;
A detective garda was shot and killed at the scene of an attempted robbery of a credit union last night.

Two of the raiders were arrested shortly afterwards near Dublin city.

It is understood that the deceased, named last night as Det Garda Adrian Donohoe was with another colleague, Det Garda Joseph Ryan, and was on escort duty at Bellurgan, Jenkinstown in Dundalk at around 9.30pm when the shooting took place.

Multiple shots were fired in the incident at the Lordship credit union premises.

The raiders immediately fled the scene in what is understood to be a dark coloured Volkswagen Passat. Two of them were arrested in Whitehall, near Dublin airport and are understood to be from the capital.

With emotions running high it should be noted that the right people need to be aprehended... It must be very tempting just to grab the nearest usual suspects.

Sad:-( in cases like this its the family left behind I feel most for. I hope his wife gets his pension or some form of financial assistance so that they dont have to be out of pocket also, does anyone know what happens in this regard for an officer killed on duty? I would hope his family are not just forgotten.

The Gardai are denying that they caught 2 suspects.

The Irish Times need to update their website.

RIP and condolences to his family and colleagues.

Its times like this people might realise what the job involves and the dangers gardai face every day. It's not all coffee, donuts and free lunches.

Financially his family will be well looked after. But that no replacement for a lost husband and father.
I cannot iterate my feelings for those who done this despicable act.

Rest In Peace, some of my family are guards too.

Are we seeing a pattern of raiders coming from Dublin to hit the surrounding counties, is that what this is?

Sincerest condolences to that man's family.

A truly despicable act by utter cowards.

When caught, the perpetrators should never see the outside of a prison again. (Won't happen, but should).

On a minor side-note (because this pales in comparison to the actual murder), it was a bit sickening that the media felt it necessary to publish the man's name within less than 4 hours of this atrocity occurring.

Deepest condolences to his wife, three young children, his colleagues and friends. I hope they are not long apprehending his murderers and they get the justice they deserve. No tolerance for violence against those who go out every day to protect the ordinary citizens of this country. RIP.

RIP to this poor guy doing an honest days work. It just shows how much crime is gone out of control, AGS is doing what they can on ever diminishing resources but the blame lies squarely on spineless politicians and those overpaid cowards in the judiciary.

Things like this will sadly only get more frequent unless changes are made. When you have a system that prioritises the criminal and his rights over serving justice then more of these scum will continue to behave like this, they are not afraid of the guards because they know there is no proper law and order to back up the Gardai.

Terrible tragedy. Sincerest sympathies to his wife, children, friends families and colleagues . No one should ever have to go through seeing their partner go to work only never to arrive home.
I hope they get these scumbags and throw away they keys.

Adrian O'Donoghue was a well respected member of the Lordship community and was deeply involved in the local St Patricks GAA club. Ironically these pictures were taken outside the credit union where he died. RIP Garda O'Donoghue.
He can be seen here standing at the back in Pic opening9, http://www.stpatricksgfc.net/gallery/official-opening.

    RIP.

Undoubtedly the perpetrators will turn out to be described with that wonderful phrase "they were known to the authorities".

I would also disagree with calls for arming the whole force. This poor man was armed but he didn't even have the opportunity to draw his firearm before he was murdered.

    More Defence Force presence please.
More abundance of Garda Armed Response Units please.
Less cutting of Garda funding please.

Thank you to all the honest and upstanding members of An Garda Siochana for protecting us - We have the utmost respect for you.
