Could we just keep this to condolences without the need for poltical point scoring?
A man is dead, murdered by thugs, I hope they get caught quickly, and they will get their day in court which is more than this poor man got. RIP

I think the last time a garda was killed during a robbery it was another garda who did the shooting. Lot to be said for waiting for to see what actually happened before breaking out the pitchforks

Petty, pedantic squabbling over silly points.

A man is dead. a woman has been made a widow and kids have lost their dad.

All people should need to post is RIP

    Few questions still unclear here.

    Why so late
Was he responding to a panic alarm
Bit strange how a branch car got there first

Why is a Garda detective working in a credit union
Because he's retired. The Credit Union work is on a part time basis.

    Okay then, go on.

    Why?

Generally they leave to do something rather than just happen to be driving near something. Like I said, not saying conspiracy or anything, just odd for a detective to be the first responder to something like this.

questions that can wait for answers. we're not investigating, so move this elsewhere.

This is a terrible tragedy for the late Garda's family and should be a line in the sand for us as a society and as a state.
There should be no more cuts in front line policing. Why would any citizen risk their life as an unarmed Garda for more work, less pay and higher taxes.
This government has shown itself to be softer on crime than any government since the 70's.

My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues.

I heard sirens going through town at around that time and never imagined that something like this would happen. :(

    RIP.

Somebody killed a Garda today and
    A part of Ireland died
A piece of our country he swore to protect
Will be buried with him at his side

The suspect who shot him will stand up in court,
    With counsel demanding his rights
While a young widowed mother must work for her kids,
and spend many long, lonely nights

The beat that he walked was a battlefield too
Just as if he'd gone off to war
Though the flag of our nation won't fly at half mast,
To his name they will add a gold star

Yes, somebody killed a Garda today,
    In your town or mine
While we slept in comfort behind our locked doors,
A Garda put his life on the line

Now his ghost walks a beat on a dark city street,
And he stands at each new rookies side
He answered the call, of himself gave his all
And a part of Ireland died

It got there first because it was an armed robbery...it may not have been the closest car but it was the first one to arrive because a squad car turning up wtih 2 Gardai with batons is no use in that situation so the detectives took over. If you watch Road Wars etc. you'll see similar there from the UK; unarmed officers waiting for a Trojan unit before proceeding.

This is all guesswork anyway, we don't know if it was an armed robbery or a cash delivery that was attacked. News is still unclear.

The "unarmed" bit about the Gardai should have the inverted commas bolded.

the "Branch" haven't existed for years ! The guard was probably just a member of the Local dective Unit...Nothing strange about Gardai escorting money!
why not dio the decent thing, condemn the murdering batsards that killed him and wish his collegues well in the difficult job they will have in apprehending the culprits.
