RIP, why wernt the army on it with them, usually there is at least an army jeep with a few soldiers, the f***ers would have ran away or be lying in a pool of blood. RIP

For big transports there are, usually to main post offices and the like but a lot happen without them, some happen with Gardai, some with private security, some with nothing. These guys probably thought they'd get a handy few 10s of thousands given the time of the week this happened and mistimed it. In a tiny post office near me none of the big depositors (for a loan company) will go near it in the morning or on a Monday because they were getting targeted and a few stupidly resisted.

When are we going to f*c*in do something about this , this country is being wrecked by these scumbags. The fabric of society is starting to rot because of this crap. Nobody feels safe anymore

I don't think such tragedies should ever be politicised but it's hard to ignore that side of things when some are demanding slashes in that sector.

Something has to be done to stop these scumbags, the programme on TV3 a few weeks ago showed that the gangs and criminals are now armed better then the Gardai and that is wrong, its time something was done to get these scumbags.

RIP to that Garda and condolences to his family, friends and colleagues

    Awful news
The scum who did this aren't going to know what hit them and rightly so
My thoughts and feeling go out to all those who have been devastated by this.

i personally wouldn't bat an eyelid if these types of scum were beaten to within an inch of their lifes in garda custody. they'd still enter prison with a damn sight more than that man has been left with.

and i'd say you'd have a queue the lenght of ireland to lay one in.

I can't even bring myself to type "RIP , condolences to family etc" because it just seems like meaningless lip service on an anonymous forum. There are no words to express how I feel about what has just happened. I am in an absolute state of shock reading this. Physically terrified for the future of Irish society.

    Calm down ffs

S'pose 12 years for 'manslaughter' if caught, maybe 3-4 years suspended by a judge who is a dick like a lot of judges..

We need to arm our entire force and have a no Sympathy approach towards these scumbags!!

Police in other countries are seen as harsh but it works well and people have respect.....!!

    R.I.P Detective

The detectives were armed - which shows that arming them is not the answer. However I do wonder why they never seem to have bullet proof vests.

How is he posting nonsense? By posting anything other than condolences?
He said he hates people speculating but then speculates himself. Pure nonsense. If you read the posts yourself before posting you'd know what you were talking about.

the unfortunate thing is that so many no longer respect the uniform.

you have hit the nail on the head, not alone the uniforn, any uniform or church, state etc, there comes a time when action needs to be taken, can this goverment say that at the least in relation to law and order austerity does not work, nor should it even be tried, how in the name of god can cutbacks fight crime, this thinking is away with the faries, this rant is nor over.

He could have been wearing one and was hit in an exposed area or they used a rifle, standard soft armour won't stop a round from a rifle.

That's the thing, bulletproof vests are obvious so they'll know they're probably armed too.

I do find it odd that it was a detective though, must've been acting on something to be there.

Are you for real. Stop speculating. The reports are clear they were escorting the van and were fired upon killing one of the gardai. Enough fairy tales.

RTE and other outlets reporting the Garda as critical - not dead.

Not saying it's one of the other myself but maybe everyone should wait for more official sources before jumping to conclusions.

Also - whoever named him - you should be ashamed. Even by AH standards that's pretty low. Stop trying to be the guy with the scoop for one second and think about his family/friends who could well be reading this.

im going to stop you there because noone wants to hear your rant. i dont mean to be offensive, and sure you have the right to post what you wish, but this man did not die because of paper work or decisions. he died in the line of duty for the people. by scum of the earth. absolute scrapings of the arse of a barrel. as been mentioned several times, this is not a time for debate. this is a time to mourn a brave man. a brave man who is one of thousands all over the country who day and night are on the front line for us, the people.

What fairy tales? Do you think every money transfer has a Garda or Army escort? Do you think they usually assign detectives to duties that don't involve a crime that has actually happened or there is reason to believe will happen?
