I know myself, when i rock up to a check point i convince myself than ive drugs in the boot because the uniform puts the fear of god into me. a fear that makes me really respect the laws and the people who enforce these laws.

I cannot comprehend going up against a garda, which in my eyes would be a terrible carry on. but to physically harm a garda is disgusting, and this case has just gone beyond the worst kind of evil.

a man doing his job, a job to protect the public. RIP for the fallen.

its a disgrace, but please no cheap politics. this is something far worse than a catalyst for a debate. this is far far worse. tragic.

Terrible news. And terrible that it might take something like this to spark a major clampdown on the type of people involved.
I'm also quite surprised about a credit union delivery at this time on a Friday.
Does anyone know if this was a joint Garda/army escort or is that only for the bigger deliveries?

I've only ever seen the DF deliver money to a post office, if there had been soldiers with this one then the fckers would be lying in a pool of blood as we speak.

God love them...no doubt they had a chance to surrender to the Garda but they didn't...their intentions are irrelevant..their actions are what matter.

Like I said, not condoning it. Generally the "big" escorts seem to be army ones and obvious while others often happen without Gardai or with some not being obvious.
What you said doesn't make sense, surely a "proper escort" of gardai would have guns etc. They most likely saw this as an easy target and were unexpectedly met with resistance. I hope they're caught pay for what they've done, I just dislike silly handwringing and people spouting improbable scenarios.

EDIT: Just saw your edit, I doubt there was time to think about backing down, and it would only take one of the four to panic for this to happen. Again, not making excuses, arseholes who make it possible to do this should be punished properly.

    "The Final Inspection"

The policeman stood and faced his God,
Which must always come to pass.
He hoped his shoes were shining.
Just as brightly as his brass.

    "Step forward now, policeman.
How shall I deal with you?
Have you always turned the other cheek?
To My church have you been true?"

The policeman squared his shoulders and said,"No, Lord, I guess I ain't,
Because those of us who carry badges
    can't always be a saint.

I've had to work most Sundays,
and at times my talk was rough,
    and sometimes I've been violent,
Because the streets are awfully tough.

But I never took a penny,
    That wasn't mine to keep....
Though I worked a lot of overtime
When the bills got just too steep.

And I never passed a cry for help,
Though at times I shook with fear.
    And sometimes, God forgive me,
    I've wept unmanly tears.

I know I don't deserve a placeAmong the people here.
    They never wanted me around
    Except to calm their fear.

If you've a place for me here,
    Lord,
It needn't be so grand.I never expected or had too much,
    But if you don't.....I'll understand.

There was silence all around the throne
Where the saints had often trod.
    As the policeman waited quietly,
For the judgment of his God.

    "Step forward now, policeman,
    You've borne your burdens well.
Come walk a beat on Heaven's streets,
You've done your time in hell."

perhaps its time to arm. i dont know. would teach some of these scum a lesson. pulling a weapon and being neutralised before even thinking of getting a finger on the trigger.

the unfortunate thing is that so many no longer respect the uniform.

Same. I thought most CIT was handled by the DF. Especially in the border counties.

    This is pretty tragic.

Speaking if which, I hope the Defence Forces offer all the support they can to the Gardai in the wake of this.

RIP, why wernt the army on it with them, usually there is at least an army jeep with a few soldiers, the f***ers would have ran away or be lying in a pool of blood. RIP

Again I find this funny, similar stuff without deaths has been happening for ages in this area and I'm sure plenty of others. It's not to do with the recession or drugs or anything else, some places have been let go for too long by everyone.

The only death penalty in this country was for the killing of a garda, usually commuted to life, but sometimes you have to wonder.

Fixed your post. That's long since been abolished.

Which is really a shame, as in this case :(

Poor guy. Just doing his job.

I don't think anyone should be posting the man's name on here. The poor family may not all be aware yet.

Please edit it out of your posts.

My condolences to his family and Garda, such a terrible event.

RIP to that poor poor man. Its absolutely horrendous. Thoughts and prayers are with his family.

As said before, the Gardai get a lot of stick, generally for a few bad eggs bending the rules. Something like this just makes us realise what exactly they face everyday and now a young family left without their daddy and partner. Awful.
I don't think the Gardai get half enough praise for what they do. My dads a member and it is just unthinkable what that poor family are going to go through.

    RIP

Utter Scumbags. So angry over this. If they had even attempted something like this when the DF were around they would almost likely have been met by 7.62mm from Steyr Rifles.

    Complete scum.

    RIP to the man shot.

I would say Garda stations all over the country are a hive of activity looking for the guys that did it. Hopefully they are caught.

Might be best to wait and see what the full facts were, the guard shot in Abbeyleix(few years back)was not shot by the robbers, if I recall rightly...

RIP to the Guard and condolences to his family regardless.

Surely this would be subversives rather than plan vanilla robbers? Can't see robbers shooting at a gard unless they are as dim as they are scummy. Are a lot of Detectives not armed as it is?

I can't even bring myself to type "RIP , condolences to family etc" because it just seems like meaningless lip service on an anonymous forum. There are no words to express how I feel about what has just happened. I am in an absolute state of shock reading this. Physically terrified for the future of Irish society.

    No mercy.

RIP to the garda in question. Just doing his job.

What do you mean by that?

Heavy gang police brutality type stuff?

Reality is that this is the risk police men the world over take - its a very very dangerous job

Proper procedure shouldn't go out the window at times like this in an angry reaction, civil liberties and an accountable police force are important.

We have seen gangs shooting each other up in the past while and people on here and elsewhere applauding the deaths of the people involved, the likes of Alan Ryan and others murdered by feuding gangs. It seemed only a matter of time until something like this happened, maybe people will remember that the bad guys don't just use their weapons on one another and stop reviling in them killing each other

Very sad news, RIP, hopefully the people who did it are caught quickly
