After reading all these stories which are amazing Ive just remembered another story from when I was younger around age 11-14 cant remember exactly .

At the end of my road growing up there was an abandoned house everyone used to say it was haunted but I dont think anyone believed until strange things started to happen.

One day we all decided to gather around this house each one thinking they were brave looking in the window, each day something in the house was different there was a mirror broken on the floor and tiles next day we went back they were fixed which got us all terrified so we ran for the hills.

We decided to be brave and go up again next day and to our horror they were all broken again. next thing someone said they seen the curtain moved upstairs we all looked up and each one looked terrified we all said did you see that? ( the hairs are standing on my arms telling this) we all saw a little girl pale grey she was looking out at us and then she was gone curtain back we all ran as fast as we could home, after a few years the house was fixed.

Theres been so many owners just moved after a year or two just wondering has this something to do with it? guess ill never know.

    Great thread :-)

Once when I was about 7 both my brothers were ill so I went to school alone. My mam thought another neighbour who was older than me would be in school to walk home with me but she was also sick.
I couldn't contact home as we didn't have house phone so I walked on my own.

A man stopped his car and told me to get in or he'd hit me. I said no he tried to grab me so I threw my school bag at him and ran into a nearby drive way. Scared the crap out of me.

As an adult I had a very vivid dream one night that I was standing by my brothers grave for his funeral. Four days later my brother had a sudden cardiac arrest someone was on the scene to give CPR but 5 weeks later we lost him.

I've no stories as such but I thought this list of the world's scariest forests and similar places was good.

one time me and my cousin saw a glass on a flat wooden floor slide about three feet. it scared the **** out of me, and to this day i've no idea how it could have happened.

we got viciously assaulted for no reason and some people seem to be labeling us as the bad guys. usually with racists they make a prejudiced comment following the non-racist comment.

we genuinely were doing nothing and yet we walked away from it with black eyes, split lips, my friend who got attacked had a broken nose, etc.

anyway let's not try to derail this thread with this....

Actually no and glad I am of that after reading some of these stories. Had some scary dreams but they don't count.

The closest I ever got was possibly seeing a ghost. But it was only creepy when I found out years later that everyone who slept in the same room had the same experience. So that doesn't count either.

    So no.

regarding the crutches story, though it's very entertaining, I think it's a bunch of bull****. :pac:

Having posted the above. I suddenly remembered a couple of creepy moments. Must have blanked them.

It was when I was serving in the FCA, my unit was in Kilworth camp for two weeks. One night I ended up on guard duty. The guard room and armoury there was a bit unusual. Just two cottages surrounded by barbed wire. The sentry post was isolated from the guard room at the edge of one of the buildings near the camp perimeter which was separated from the next field by a big hedge. Ok during the day but at night? My first fright was when a famous Irish international rugby player approached my post, obviously with drink taken. To be fair he was an army officer at the time. While I was debating whether to challenge or shoot him, he asked me to get the guard commander to wake him early next morning. Phew!

After that it got quiet and it turned misty. I began to get a bit spooked. This is despite the fact I was in a sandbagged bunker holding an assault rifle with plenty of ammunition, wearing body armour, a helmet, a gas mask on my belt and with back up yards away.

Suddenly there was this terrible screaming from the other side of the hedge. I nearly fainted. It stopped then it started again. It was unearthly. I just backed up against the wall clutching my rifle. Eventually it stopped. When I was relieved later, in more ways than one. I didn't bother telling the new sentry, just legged it back to the guardroom. I told the others about it. The only sensible suggestion was that it could be a sheep having a lamb or being attacked by a Fox.

I wanted to believe that. I still want do.

Well I'm never sleeping again. Been rooted to my chair for the better part of an hour scared out of my wits. Good times!

Have a couple of my own creepy moments.

One was when I was staying with my girlfriend's family in a fairly isolated house in the countryside. Down a small road, about 10 houses on it and it's a few miles long. We're all sitting inside, her brother, her Dad and Mam, herself and myself when we hear this horrible bloodcurdling scream. We all basically sat upright, then relaxed, assumed it was an animal.

It happened again a few minutes later, louder and longer. Just a horrible wail, the sound of agony, the scream of the banshee. We're a bunch of Dubs in a lonely house in the middle of nowhere. It keeps going.

The screams are clearly coming from down the road. Her Dad says we should check it out in case the neighbours need help or an ambulance.

He takes a torch and we slowly walk down the road toward the source of this death wail. It gets louder and louder. It's horrible, really, really horrible. Terrifying too.

It's pitch black, the nearest street light is about 10 miles away and we can't see the light from the house anymore. The screaming stops for a while, and we relax a bit again.

We keep walking, in case it's someone hurt, it was clearly a human sound, proper screaming.

It starts again, much, much closer now. We get to the next house along the road and...

There's the local farmer who's brought home some young lady. She's hammered and wants to go home. The guy's told her she's basically too drunk to walk the 10 miles or so back to town, and they end up arguing, with her screaming and wailing - crying, but louder than any crying I've ever heard.

The only other sort of supernatural thing that ever happened me was when I was 21 nearly twenty years back. I sleep like a log normally, and with a few beers on board, good luck to waking me. Every Sunday night I used to stay in my then-girlfriends parents house after we had been out in the pub, and sleep on a bed chair in the sitting room. Obviously had a few on me and nodded off in a deep sleep about 12-ish when we came in. Next thing I realised I was sitting up straight in the dark, wide-awake. It was how you feel when you realise you have slept through an alarm and get a huge sudden fright, but I knew I hadn’t because it was still pitch dark. Anyway, rooted around for my watch, it said 5:22am (always remember it, crappy digital yolk but I had it years!), so lay back down and went back to sleep. Got up next morning and two of us got the bus to our respective jobs. Was in about twenty minutes, about 9ish and my manager comes down and tells me to go home that my granddad had taken ill (myself and my mam had always lived with my nan and granddad). Got home anyway and found out that he had died. He had sat up in bed and died of a massive heart attack, with my mam saying that my nan had rushed into her in a state when it happened just before 5:30am. Probably just a coincidence but it had me a bit freaked for ages!

Had a weird thing happen today while I was driving the car.

I could smell someone breathing right beside me. Happened three times in the space of a mile, I turned around to check there was no one in the back seat, god knows what I'd have done if there was!

3:30 AM last night just about to turn out all the lights and go to bed. I hear a banshee-like sound of a fox squealing outside my window. Was just frozen on the spot for about 30 seconds as it was happening, creepy as ****.

Something like this, only a much more anguished sound.

In the early 80s when I was working in a pub in Waterford on three separate occasions during a 2 month period, three lots of people came in and took me to task for not acknowledging them when they passed me on the street when they said hello to me even though I was looking straight at them. On two of those occasions I wasn't around the town but back in my flat and the third time when the couple came in they had just seen me and even kinda stopped me to get a reaction back although I hadn't left the pub since my shift had started a few hours beforehand. I was nervous for months afterwards, bad enough other people meeting up with my doppelganger but I certainly didn't want to see her.

It didn't happen again until about three years ago when I walked into my local butchers and he greeted me with a, "Well, did you forget something?" I looked puzzled and said what do you mean and he replied that I'd been in a half hour before and gotten some pork chops and steak. He didn't believe me when I said I hadn't been in his shop since the previous week.

A somewhat similar but different event happened about 20 years ago. My mother was over in London staying with us. One night she woke up to see me standing in her bedroom doorway looking blankly at her. She was puzzled because I was wearing a towel wrapped around me and my hair wrapped in a towel turban style and I didn't say anything. When she asked me what was wrong I turned and walked up the corridor. She said that she was too scared to go and check on me in my bedroom because the most awful feeling had come over her on seeing me and when we got up in the morning she read me the riot act for scaring her like that! It was about 3am according to her small alarm clock that she used to take everywhere with her.

in my sons last house often had a visitation by a spirit that would drift across his babies bedroom,at night as he had the baby monitor on he was so frightened he would rush up stairs to bring the baby down,i checked it out but the spirit never left any residue of its passing, this week he has rented another cottage and as it is next to a old church and cemetery he was worried he may have a ghost in it ,i was happy to say to him no it has not, yesterday i even walked the victorian graveyard to see if i could pick up on anything but everything seems to be ok

Just what residue could a ghost leave behind exactly?

Many many things have happened to me over the years but the one that freaks me out the most was when I was having a really bad dream where I had left my bed and went down to the lounge to try to get out of the house.

I felt real fear in the dream but I didnt realise I was dreaming at the time, I just had this urge to get the hell out of the house so in the dream I was banging and banging on the double doors that led from the lounge to the back garden, banging and banging feeling ever more scared but the doors would not open.

Anyway I was eventually woken up by the sound of the house alarm going off , I turned to my wife as she put in the code to stop it ringing, I asked her what had set it off, she told me it was zone 6....the double doors...the very ones I had been dreaming about and trying to escape through!

I tried to reason that maybe I was sleepwalking but I have to tell you that the double doors are right over the other side of the house and downstairs so its not possible to set the alarm off and get back to my room in the few seconds the alarm was ringing for, besides my wife woke first and saw me struggling and was just about to wake me when the alarm started, I simply have no explanation but we dont live here anymore and I never really felt all that comfortable living there anyway.

My father was very much a creature of habit and a very quiet man and every Saturday night he went to 7.30 mass, then went into the cemetery across the road from the church to visit his parents' grave and then go into the pub nearby for 2 pints and then drive home (before the drink driving laws of nowadays). He would then go straight to bed and fill us in on any news the next morning.

One Saturday in May 1998 as soon as he got home, he told us he had gone down to visit the grave as usual but that he had got a terrible fright because a black cat just sprang from nowhere and landed on his shoulder and he couldn't shake it off. Then he said a man came up beside him and managed to scare it off. My father said that he didn't know the man but that they walked back up the cemetery path together and that they went into the pub together. He said he was a very nice man for a stranger and that they sat together at the bar and that they had a great chat about old times.

My father fell ill suddenly the following Monday and died. After his funeral we asked quite a number of people who were in the pub that night and the barman himself did they know the man who was drinking with my father that night. Each one of them said that my father was alone that night as usual and besides there was just the usual crowd in the pub and there was no man there that nobody knew.

Needless to say we found this very spooky, what with the cat story as well. Must have been the grim reaper himself.

It must be about 15 years ago now, but I woke up one morning after having a really vivid dream, you know the ones were you can't tell at the time that it is a dream? I dreamed that I was at my Fathers funeral mass, I could see all the mourners and hear the priest etc.

It really shook me up and as my husband and I lived across the street from my parents at that time I couldn't relax until I went and checked that he was ok, even though I knew I was being irrational and that I would have been told straight away if anything had happened to him.

I called into my parents and dad was fine so I told them about the dream. My mum and brother were oddly quiet and giving each other 'who is going to tell her' looks. It turned out that my best friend had died that night, he was a healthy young man and it was sudden and unexpected. The weirdest part of all was sitting through the real funeral, which was exactly the one that I'd already attended in that nightmare.

About ten years ago, I was driving on the back roads from Lucan to Clonee on a Sunday night at about 4am. As I drove along I saw a little girl standing at the side of the road in a communion dress, veil, handbag and hands pressed together in a praying fashion.
The spookiest thing was a sort of calm, unnerving grin on her face that just looked straight through me. I always think I should have stopped and went back, but it was terrifying.

Another strange one happened on a building site security job I had which involved sitting in a small portacabin all night with a heater and nothing else.

One night about 2am there was an almighty bang on the Perspex window, I jumped up and looked out and there was a small boy about 8 or 9 years running back to bang the window again. He just stood there for about ten seconds and then turned and ran off laughing. He had a school uniform and school bag on his back. It was odd but what was really strange was it was the first week of August. What kid runs around in a school uniform during the summer!!?

It could be that your brain fabricated that dream to match the alarm. That is you heard the alarm going off, your brain made up a plausible and strange explanation for it, and then you woke up.

My own experience of this that I still vividly remember from many decades ago when I was perhaps 10 - I remember dreaming of starting my dad's scooter and winding the throttle and holding it there - revving high - and I don't know why I was doing it, but then the engine started slowing and was about to cut out and I woke up and realise I was listening to my alarm - one of those old style wind up alarms, which has been blaring for the length of my dream and was about to stop ringing... the ring.. pause ring.. pause ringg.... exactly matched the scooter engine stuttering.. Only plausible explanation there is my brain heard the alarm starting ringing, and instead of waking up, it instantaneously made up a dream to explain the sound so that I can sleep thru it.

Which does prove my theory that ghosts are just images of people who might be still alive. You have been haunting yourself. Ghosts are just images of people like video or something.

Me I think my ghost inhabits a certain place. Even though I'm still around. I hated that place with a vengeance. Woo hoo!

Yes I once had a bad dream that as taxpayers myself, my kids and my grandkids would have to pay off the private gambling debts of well connected businessmen, cronie politicians, bankers and bondholders, and successive Governments would pretend that was ok. Oh wait . . . .
