This was a big story in the early 70's when a 13 year old girl was found to have been isolated in a dark room for almost her entire life, strapped to a toilet chair all day long, day-in-day-out with no social or emotional interaction and mental stimulation. She would be strapped down and tied into a sleeping bag where she couldn't move her limbs.

It's noted as being one of the most extreme cases of social deprivation and child abuse as contact with another human was kept to absolute minimum. Her father was nuts and was the only one who had any contact with her, only to beat and scream at her if she did anything. Even as much as making a whimpering sound she would be punished harshly.

She never left that room and a yellow raincoat was the only stimulant she ever had. There was a window but she couldn't anything other than a few inches of the sky.

She was only discovered when her mother took her out one day and went into a wrong office when she was seeking benefits for her blindness (the mother had cataracts) and a social worker saw how awful Genie looked.

After she was taken into care her, clearly mad in the head, father killed himself.

She was 13 but she appeared to be half that age and moved in an extremely bizarre way, like Mr. Burns with his hands out:

    tumblr_m4j5uwFQ4Y1rngbmho1_500.gif

She became a highly interesting case to psychologists, linguists and other scientists into how she developed her own language and ways of communicating. There was much debate whether she was mentally disabled or her condition was the result of isolation (which obviously had a major effect on her).

She was supposedly learning basic words and sign language at a reasonable rate (which lead the argument that she wasn't as mentally handicapped as first assumed) and was able to communicate to scientists about things, albeit, in a crude way. It was noted she like classical music as it was the only form of music she heard from one of the neighbour's kids playing the piano.

She regressed when she was put in a foster home and refused to open her mouth as she was beaten for vomiting. She was scared silly that opening her mouth would result in getting a thrashing from someone so she reverted back to sign language.

A big lawsuit was filed from one researcher, who was a foster parent to her at one point, who used Genie's mother to push the case. This resulted in funding being cut and care for her slipped away.

Now, she lives in an adult foster home. Not much is known about her other than when a private investigator found her back in 2000 where he described her as being "happy"

    This is her from 1988
    ht_wiley4_080515_ssv.jpg

You can read up on her story on Wiki and this documentary:

It's quite fascinating yet horrible that a human life was treated in such a throwaway fashion.

Following the recent shootings some papers in Chicago started running the story of Laurie Dann again.

One of the first cases of a school shooting recorded and the only one to be carried out by a woman.

Very fortunate that more people weren't killed in her attacks.

I can't watch that documentary on Genie. The story is heartbreaking enough without listening to that scientist/researcher referring to her as a creature. :( The poor child never had a chance either before or after her release.

Pictures here from the fires in Australia. This is a family who took shelter beside a lake from the flames, when the heat became too much they climbed into the water to keep cool. Pictures were taken by the Grandfather.

The fourth one with the dog is especially poignant and very frightening at the same time, the last photo gives an idea about how serious the situation was.

    They all survived.
In this photo provided by the Holmes family, Tammy Holmes, second from left, and her grandchildren, two-year-old Charlotte Walker, left, four-year-old Esther Walker, third from left, nine-year-old Liam Walker, eleven-year-old Matilda, second from right, and six-year-old Caleb Walker, right, take refuge under a jetty as a wildfire rages near-by. Some people just take the chance and before they know it they're in the crap, same thing happened with katrina.

I'd imagine a body of water is far safer than a car. I'd also imagine they didn't sit around to debate the issue.

They were saying on the news that a lot of the highways were closed down people so who didn't leave at the very first warning were trapped in some locations

In rural places there isn't a lot of roads either.

Have a look at Google maps for Dunalley, Tasmania on Google.

And yes - the fire can blow in that quick in the bush. But even worse is that burning embers can blow for miles in a decent wind and land in your garden. A lot of families who are far from the main fire suddenly find themselves in the midst of a blaze.

A famous photograph showing test pilot George Aird ejecting from a pre-production example of the English Electric Lightning fighter in September 1962.

Fortunately the pilot survived after coming down in a greenhouse full of tomatoes.

He suffered multiple breaks of his limbs and cuts from the shower of glass that rained down on him after going through the roof of the greenhouse.

Just look at the smile on this boy's face!

This photograph entitled “Werfel’s first pair of new shoes”, appeared in the 1946 issue of Life magazine.

Werfel, a six-year-old Austrian orphan, has just received his first new pair of shoes as part of the post-war relief effort of the American Red Cross.

Not exactly world-shocking, but here's a picture I took of Hitler's bunker this year. There's basically nothing to mark it these days, it's deliberately so, so that it doesn't become a focus for any neo nazi movements, it's just a car park to a block of flats:

I don't know anyone in the photo, they're just randomers that were on the same walking tour as me :)

I had just spoken to Phil Andrews the week before this happened (at the University of Illinois) . We had swam/played water polo against each other in school. His actions saved a few lives that day.

Over 200,000 were killed during this 6 week atrocity. Just googled some of the images of the Nanking massacre and the pictures are much worse and barbaric than anything similar out of Poland/Germany. This is one of the more famous pictures

    shanghai-baby.jpg

Coincidentally General Tani Masuo who oversaw the Nanking Massacre was executed in March 1947 after being found guilty of war crimes. Poetically his executioner was a Chinese veteran who survived the Battle of Nanking.

Not a grumesome image but see HERE

What’s makes it even more upsetting for the Chinese is the recent denial by one top level Japanese government official that the event took place.

Edit addon. Looking through all the pics to date on this thread, it is perplexing how some people can be passionate, loving, inspiring, charitable, selfless humanitarians and others can be complete and utter, lowest of the low scumball animals.

Googled nanking massacre also, which I now regret.

There is a photo of a woman half-way through being beheaded.

    Very, very graphic

I think it's just her leg and I guess what's left of her neck. Hard to believe it's real.
